BIC:

The Harmony docked. Several teams entered the ship and returned with the remains of the fighter, bound for the research bay. Kayne observed quietly, The base Admiral was shocked that it wasn't a destroyed drone, and began immediate analysis of the entire being. Progress was slow. Kayne stepped in, several times, as human operators made several mistakes. After hours, the base computer finally finished the simulation.

"Kayne, the results are ready," said the head researcher. But Kayne was already ahead of him.

"It appears to be of NSCD origin. It had no weapons payload, but it had plenty of sensor equipment. We only recovered some of the equipment." Kayne ran simulations on it.

"Why is it here, then?"

"I don't know." Kayne was purposely withholding information. "I'll get back to you when I uncover more results." Kayne disconnected and began observing freighter traffic.

In less than five minutes, the massive sensor facility orbiting Tau IV began an alert. Kayne quickly answered it.

"Sir, anomaly grid C-5 has just gone active again. Some sort of wormhole has attempted activation. Location in asteroid belt, meridian 127. Readings are massive. We've got Radiation readings from an unidentified source, as well as Subspace and Hyperspace overlays. It is still growing." Kayne clicked and connected directly to the sensor facility. Yes, he saw it. And the readings were quite unusual. And uniform.

"Roger, Sensor A-R. I will handle the situation. Keep running scans on it, dedicate all facilities to it." Kayne switched over to the main shipyard.

"We've got a Kepler-class anomaly in meridian 127 of the asteroid belt," he announced to the facility. "Launch six shield ships, 6 destroyers, 4 battleships, 10 frigates, 8 cruisers, 2 carriers, and the flagship Myriad. I will be aboard the flagship. We do not know whether this anomaly is dangerous, but given past activity of Tau V, it could be disastrous." He clicked and began launch preparations. "Establish a 10,000 KM No-Fly zone in the vicinity. Evacuate all civilian ships and stations within the area, and bar access to any civilian ships."

As the ships launched and Kayne's AI core was loaded, a small ticker scrambled on the Myriad's control panel, reverting a second later to the normal sensor output.

Kayne observed the fleet's progress as efforts were made to contain the anomaly. Several civilian stations were evacuated or moved, but they were small. A destroyer nearly had to fire on a group of tick-off miners, after they learned that their prized Titanium deposit would be inaccessible indefinitely. A thorough search uncovered at least 13 sensor outposts, all hardwired to transmit continuously. These were destroyed on sight. Once lock-down had been achieved, the Myriad pulled up to the entrance to the wormhole. The 4 Baryonic Reversal Lasers on it's bow swiveled and locked onto the entrance, ready to fire at the slightest hint of threat. Military Research Vessels Dradis and Bose pulled up and unfolded their extremely sensitive, incredibly expensive monitoring equipment. Kayne received a transmission fro Bose soon after.

"Sir, the wormhole is about to connect to another region," the operator stated. "Radiation Signatures are declining." Kayne noted this and continued observing. It was a swirling mass of color, with a black orb, like an event horizon, swirling in the center. But other than this, it bore no similarity. After several minutes, the Dradis noted it's signature.

"The wormhole is stabilizing," the technician said. "It should be operable in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Now." As he spoke, it began pulsing. Weapon signatures intensified as it solidified, and the horizon disappeared. "The link is complete. Destination is not any known system, nor in this galaxy." Kayne directly connected to the Dradis and analyzed the sensor feeds.

"You only have half the puzzle," Kayne said. "This is not connected to any system, but another dimension entirely." He ran more checks. "Sensors indicate that this isn't the only opening. If I'm not mistaken..." he didn't finish. At that moment, a large ship began peering out of the wormhole.

Every ship locked onto it. Kayne saw it was made of an unknown isotope of titanium. He could not penetrate that shell. It left the wormhole and stopped short of the Myriad. It rivaled it in size. Kayne opened a broadcast channel.

"Unknown ship, you are in Terran Hierarchy Space. Identify yourself." He got no response. "Unknown ship, identify yourself at once or you will be fired on." A short transmission came from the ship.

"Sir, this is in no known language." Kayne looked at the message and then turned to the Bose.

"Bring out Project Phaaze's Translation file, number 348. Access code: *****************."

"Sir, there are no such..."

"Do as I say! Translation File 348, Access Code: *****************." A short while later, the file appeared in his memory. He applied the filter to the message. It said, "We do not understand. Do not shoot. We are friends." Kayne looked at this, applied the language to his database, then sent this message to the ship, "Identify yourself. We await your answer." And to the fleet, "Power down weapons, but keep them on standby. This one seems friendly." He waited for a while.

The ship then directly connected to Kayne. He couldn't see whoever was the captain, but they had no corporeal form. "We are a scientific community, exploring this recently discovered technology. You are the first forms capable of communicating with us we've met. We honor your ingenuity." Kayne looked around at the bridge, which had no identifiable instruments, then back at the nearest form.

"Who are you, then? We have encountered others similar to your kind, but they were all hostile and attacked on sight."

"Ah, our brethren. They do not understand the multi-verse. They innately hate that which is not them, and misuse the advancements they make for them." He paused and motioned to another entity. "We call ourselves the..." At that moment, the instruments around the bridge began arcing with electricity. "What is happening? You there, fix it!" An entity floated to the console, only to be incinerated by a bolt. The leader looked to Kayne. "What have you done?" The feed shut off. The ship began backing up into the wormhole, but its engines were crippled by a large electrical signature. The ship was overcome by electrical voltage and magnetic signatures until it finally exploded. The wormhole imploded. Kayne shook himself out of a trance and contacted the Bose.

"Sir, their computer systems overloaded." Kayne checked the sensor outputs and confirmed this.

"I can confirm. The cause?"

"I'm not sure. If we can recover one of their computers, we may be able to isolate the cause. If there is anything left." The operator checked the sensors, but Kayne beat him to it.

"There is a lot left." He switched to the fleet broadcast channel. "Recover all the wreckage. The pieces have all been marked on the radar. We must identify the cause of the system meltdown."

Aygyrn's ship was surrounded by red-brown clouds as it hid within the interference from the gas giant. As a small tube sticking out of the bottom of the ship extracted hydrogen to be refined for fuel, Aygyrn began composing his message to TACCOM. In it, he included the military forces in system, the defenses around the planets, and possible jump points. Once he was finished, he began using a little known transmission method. The method, which used a Terbium centrifuge to generate a special frequency which could pass through the interference from gas giants. There were, however, a few flaws. It could not be encrypted very well, and can fry any computer systems with Polonium-Nickel alloy receivers, as they are moderately receptive to the signal, but are unable to completely receive it, leading to a blocked signal and a very exploded computer. The signal, broadcasted in a linear fashion, would hopefully not run into any computers with P-N receivers....

Aygyrn then began running his now-ritualistic checks on the ship, waiting for the ship to refuel and the cloak to recharge.

Nathan went through the noisy docking compound to the briefing room. Similarly to the military the pilots in Agrus were assigned to squadrons. Many seemed to be ex-military pilots. A man in his forty’s went up to the stage. “This is Captain Lukartes speaking, squadron leader of the 23rd Nightwolves, to all new pilots joining us in here welcome to the crew. At 2340 hours the ACFr Nedilia received some odd energy signatures during it’s post, Nightwolves we are going in. We will jump at the given co-ordinates not far from Nedilia’s location and proceed to the approximate area of the energy signatures through a series of Nav points to avoid detection. The Nedilia will provide AWACS support for this operation. It will disable the local military sensor platform to avoid detection.” “Sir won’t they notice the disappearance of the sensor data ?” “The Nedilia will replace the sensor feeding false information over the frequency. If we stick to the given co-ordinates it will be impossible to detect us. I will take Alpha wing with Presley, Nathan and Kori. Beta and Gamma wings will be as usual. Alpha wing will go through the co-ordinates to scan the area, beta wing will perform scan of another zone of interest in the area. It is unprotected so it shouldn’t pose much of a trouble. Gamma wing will patrol near the Nedilia and be on standby in case things go wrong. For this op we use the new ACF Nightbat. Those fighters are the latest word in stealth technology with formidable speed and manoeuvrability. It has a decent firepower and shielding but the armor leaves to hope for the best, so try to keep the shields intact alright ? We are taking off in 30 minutes, dismissed”

The pilots went to the flight deck. The shiny fighters were moved out of the hangars and were being prepared for the missions. Engineers ran across the deck pushing fuel tanks and rearming carts with missiles. Nathan approached his fighter. It seemed to be cleaned recently and almost ready to go. An engineer approached Nathan “Sir I’m Adam, your chief engineer. The fighter is ready to go apart from the missile and gun configurations, would you like to choose them ?” he gave him a list of weapons and missiles together with mounting capacity, energy usage, weight and general info. “I will take HL-3s and the interceptors.” Most of those weapons were quite standard tech in the military. The HL-3s were heavy plasma cannons with moderate fire rate. They packed quite a punch but had to be aimed carefully. The interceptors were radar guided missiles, designed to intercept fast targets as the name suggested. Nathan was familiar with both. “We have also loaded improved sensor pods on the fighter” Adam noted.

Nathan put on the suit and helmet. The engineers were doing final preparations on the fighters. Nathan went up the ladder to the cockpit. The setup he was studying in the recent days was also standardized and familiar. With a press of a button the dome closed on him and he began to prepare for takeoff. The Engineers quickly pulled the ladder and the Chief engineer signalled with his thumbs that he is all set up. The fighter began to move towards the runway. The wings began to arrange on the runway. “This is FlightCom, Alpha wing you are clear for launch”. Nathan activated his lower thrusters and the fighter left the ground. He began to pull the main thrusters and the fighter began to accelerate through the flight deck. The fighter gained speed and flew out of the hangar door.

“Alpha wing form up on me” said alpha 1, captain Lukartes. The fighters ascended higher through the atmosphere, leaving Tau II . “Alright as soon as we leave the gravity well we jump at those co-ordinates” Nathan received a set of jump co-ordinates on his screen and moved them to Nav points. The fighters left the atmosphere “Jump at the co-ordinates now”. The fighter began to accelerate again and in a matter of seconds it entered hyperspace. After a short travel they re-emerged at the new location. Nathan looked around. The Star of Tau Leonis was far away and so were the planets, it seemed like they were in the middle of nowhere. “This is Alpha 1 of the 23rd Nightwolves, we are ready to proceed with the mission” “Copy that Alpha 1 this is ACFr Nedilia taking command of the operation. We are jamming signals in the area as to not reveal our location so we will serve as FlightCom for this mission” “Copy that Nedilia, lets proceed to Nav1”. The fighters began to move towards Nav1. “Those fighters are quite agile sir” Noted Alpha 4 “Try to hold the break and kick in your afterburners” Said Alpha 1 as Alpha 4 suddenly reversed it’s movement and began to fly backwards “THIS IS AMAZING !” “Quite useful in dogfights” noted Nathan. In the horizon Nthan could see another ship, it was the Nedilia. The Nedilia was also designed for stealth operations. It was covered in black stealth plating and powerful ECM and EW jammers. “Taking escort positions, proceed to Nav2”.

The fighters arrived at Nav2. In the distance Nathan could pick the sensor platform. “We are proceeding with jamming the sensor platform” said Nedilia over the comm.. “Beta wing you are clear to Nav3, Alpha form on me for Nav4, Gamma remain in escort” The fighters spread out Nathan flew tightly with the wing towards the next Nav point, sticking close to Alpha 1 as not to step away from the path and reveal their location. “Proceed to Nav5”. They flew towards Nav5 as carefully as before “Alright we’re through, begin to scan the area” Nathan triggered the scanner and began to search for anything unusual. “My sensors are picking up sparse energy signatures from that area, it looks like debris, still active” “Have a look at the spread, it blew up a while ago, let’s get an active scan of that thing”. They closed to the energy source. It was indeed a piece of debris from some sort of ship, probably around a frigate in size, not more. It emitted quite low energy profiles which probably couldn’t be seen by standard sensor equipment. It kept moving with a decent speed so the fighters had to keep up. “This is Alpha 1, we are picking up sparse energy signatures from a debris piece.” “Copy that Alpha 1, we have a shuttle on standby for pickup, update us on your co-ordinates while the shuttle is passing through the sensor platforms. The debris kept moving towards the edge of their scanning area. “It will be hard to pick that thing up” noted Alpha 2. “Yea and if that shuttle won’t hurry we will leave the jamming area” They kept tracking the debris, impatiently waiting for the shuttle.

“This is Zeta shuttle, we are here for the pickup, waiting for co-ordinates” “Transmitting co-ordinates, you better hurry Zeta” “Co-Ordinates received, moving now”. The shuttle arrived shortly in the area “Let’s see of we can pick it up”. It approached the debris, trying to match speed with it, then tried to slowly close to it from the side “It’s moving too fast I can’t get a good hold on it” “you better hurry we are just 10 clicks from the jamming edge” “Aaaand …. Got it ! This is Zeta we got the package, setting course to Nav5.” The fighters left the scanning area and began to move towards the Nedilia. Zeta docked with Nedilia and they began to leave the area. “disabling jammers now, they didn’t see a thing” “Alright Nightwolves we’re jumping back to base, mission accomplished, now it’s up to the lab boys to determine what the heck is that”

Back at the base Captain Lukartes prepared a debriefing “Sit down Nightwolves. We did fairly well on the mission, Alpha wing managed to find a debris in the scanning area which our specialists are now analyzing. The titanium compound is unknown to us and it is believed to belong to a new type of ship, maybe an experimental model that went wrong, we do not know the details yet. What we do know is that the debris contained a computer that was part of the ship’s control system. The computer is amazingly intact and mostly functional, however it seems to work or be encoded in a language different from what we’re used to. It suffered from a powerful electric pulse which damaged some of the memory cells, it seems to be something similar to a kill switch which might again point at a new ship prototype. While we didn’t find what command was searching for we did a good job there, expect more recon flights soon, dismissed.”

Theta watched the wormhole from the bridge of the Midas.
"Sir, who would possess such technology, wormholes are theoretically impossible to induce"

"I have seen similar technology before, the old machines used a similar system" Theta replied

"Old machines..., you mean the frest-"

"Yes, though I do not think that this particular incident has anything to do with them"

"We wiped them out didn't we?"

"Supposedly, the Alpha has doubts, which is why we still have an active military, any other threat we could shoot down from ARK-1"

Theta turned away, as he did, the simulated window faded out. The sight of the wormhole sparked an unease deep in his brain, they could be in more trouble than he initially thought.

They had intercepted the message signalled by the unknown craft, and it matched no known language, and the Midas was not equipped with translators. However, Theta knew of an AI that did.

They had received a message from a military AI a while ago, but had chosen to ignore it, to avoid broadcasting their true location, the AI was powerful, but inferior to Theta and the rest of the crew, perhaps the translation could be remotely extracted from the AI.

Theta made his was to the comms deck, with a plan in mind, the comms officers and engineers made no objection when he connected himself to the communications array.

Fortunately the AI had left enough information for Theta to directly connect to it.

Jumping to cyberspace in 3... 2... 1....

Theta found himself just outside the virtual mind of the AI, and attempted to gain acess.
His first try failed, but he managed to gain some useless information, apparently this AI called itself "kayne"

"Stupid name" theta thought to himself.

The AI had some very impressive security systems, it took rather long for Theta to bypass them, but eventually he snuck into the mind of the AI, it was like stepping into a minefield.

"File located, prepare for withdrawal"

The engineers aboard the Midas flipped the switch, disconnecting Theta from the comms system, and pulling him out of the AI's mind.

"Sir, what did the message say?"

"We do not understand, Do not shoot, We are friends"

"Fat lot of use that was, did you leave any trace?"

"I hope not"

Something pinged in Theta's mind, when the old machines had first tried to attack ARK-1, they broadcast a similar message, thou this one seemed to be from a completely different origin, it wasn't an old machine ship, but it was definately strange.
