An outdated router tends to either be consistently slow or will intermittently disconnect from the internet. If the connection is intermittently slow, the problem usually lies elsewhere.
Calling your ISP never hurts, but low performance from bad connections are uncommon.

What is your ISP? Is it cable or DSL?

I'm not sure on the cable/DSL thing. My computer is the only one having problems (The Ethernet is ALWAYS fine). I found a very old USB adapter lying somewhere and I connected that. The connection appears to be stable, but the poor thing overheats to nearly 100 or so.

I think my PCI adapter maybe fried or busted. It would figure, because when I cleaned the computer a few days ago, the heatsink was completely blocked. The heat may have fried it over the past few months, given that the adapter is right next to it.

Call around your local computer repair shops and see if anyone has any old PCI ethernet card. Not the franchises, just local shops. They tend to horde PC components and will likely have what you need.
