Yes, it works very well.

Ok, FOR REAL IT IS DECIDING TIME FOR ME.

The computer I wanted apparently didn't exist, as I went to OfficeMax today. I now am looking at an i5 2320 or i5 3330. They are almost equal, but the 3330 is just slightly better. I would have to wait for the i5 3330 to ship from HP, with wouldn't be till the 26th. I could get the Gateway (with a 2320) in 3 business days it would ship.

HP http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp ... ponents.do

Gateway http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883113241

Same price at $480 after tax and shipping and stuff. I want windows 7 but the hp has windows 8. Gateway has windows 7. The hp also has 2 more gigs of ram, but ram is cheap.

Main question, is a 3rd gen i5 that important? Or is a 2320 ok? I am gonna be going with a 660 and an i5 now :D

Go with the gateway. Ivy Bridge was mainly about power-saving, in terms of raw power I'm pretty sure the two are fairly closely matched. Oh, and the 3330 has an HD 4000 which is better than the 2320's HD 3000 graphics, but you'll be using a 650 so that doesn't really matter.

The Gateway also looks pretty cool. Right now the advantages of the HP for you are slightly higher processing speed and triple channel memory. If I were in your position I'd get the Gateway 'cause I'm an impatient guy. 26th is a whole 9 days away o.o

Well everybody, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the gateway.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883113241

I am happy with the i5 and an EVGA 660 Superclocked. Now I will wait till summer sale and start buying games.

Oh, and thanks for dealing with my annoyingness when I constantly ask about video cards monitors and processors, I am done with that now :)

Funny thing about that fr0st, I tried to convince hyper to build a PC but the parts ended up adding up to more than an OEM PC with the extra stuff like the 660. Explanation being they're probably cutting corners in the OEM, but as long as it works who cares?

Huh? Oh shit what now? It didn't say oem...

Never mind I am really stupid. Anyway, this prebuilt is cheaper than if you tried to make it on your own. Tiel tried it (he had higher quality parts of course) and a guy on newegg tried to use pcpartpicker.com and said it would cost $70 to $100 more. I think I am getting a great deal, and I am getting the Rosewill 500w (480 rated) to go along with this. Then an EVGA Superclocked 660.

OEM is anything you buy prebuilt from the big companies. It will often come with a custom version of Windows, which will be chock full of bloatware and more importantly won't be recognizable by regular recovery disks. Instead you have to make a recovery partition or burn your own recovery disks (becaues the manufacturer couldn't be bothered to just ship them with the box.)

You'll find all sorts of strange things the longer you use it, hardware features disabled, proprietary sockets preventing upgrading, components not working quite right or missing drivers entirely if you try to wipe and install a clean OS. Stuff like that, which is why I never recommend buying from them. It's always a crap shoot.

As for price, unless you have a short timeline, it is better to shop around and wait for sales than to buy everything at face value. Sales happen all the time and there are plenty of places you can safely cut corners depending on how you end up using your machine. Much of the higher quality hardware is only more expensive because it is designed for overclocking or running for extended periods of time at high temperatures or at full capacity (e.g. for benchmarking) which you won't experience in normal use. If you don't want to deal with it, OEM certainly isn't terrible, assuming you got a good deal, but when you do that, just know that your PC is never completely yours.

Just my personal viewpoint, though. Use your own judgement.

He already bought the PC, remember? I also think that you're providing a little bit of a pessimistic viewpoint here. As long as it's standard ATX or micro ATX and not one of those crappy 'slimline' towers everything should be the same as if you built the PC yourself, albeit with bloatware and chinese parts.

@ Hyper My parts weren't high quality at all. A lot of them were from Biostar and other economical manufacturers.

@fr0st it is the same parts you would buy to build your own. I was pretty much gonna get a prebuilt no matter what, and I can easily uninstall the bloatware. I could get a clean version of Windows 7 for free legally from my brother, and I am not sure about sockets not being able to upgrade, but people do this all the time. I am probably gonna keep the preinstalled windows 7, uninstalling bloatware of course. Also Tiel's more expensive computer was without windows 7 because I didn't need it.

@ Tiel Well then, I got a better deal than I thought.

Again, I don't know exactly what you'll end up with. It's possible it's gotten more upgrade-friendly over the years, but back in the day proprietary PSUs, RAM, even CPUs were common and they would force you to buy from them if you wanted to upgrade anything, if you could even upgrade at all. But it's been a long time since I've messed with any manufacturer-built PCs so my advice may be irrelevant. If you got a good deal, that is important, too.

Oh, well, yes, you can upgrade now. On my 11 year old emachine you probably can't upgrade, but this computer is great.

Computer is here :D

There isn't too much bloatware, and it did not come with a wireless card, modem is not in this room, so right now I am running a cable, then I will either buy a usb adapter, or a pci one. I am thinking the pci x1 card would be better, but usb is easier...

New psu installed, new gpu installed and working, though a little trouble getting it to show up in device manager, all that was needed were the latest drivers.

Ran Arma 3 alpha on the 660. It was fantastically smooth. Glad I got this thing.

Get sonic ether shaders, play on super far distance, report back. For science.
