Alternatives to Hamachi

As some of you might know, a lot of the time major incidents are sparked over the program Shiva, Jedi, Pat, ACH, and occasionally Keon use to set up multiplayer matches over a virtualized LAN network. It's a lot more robust than any chatbox we've had, and also offers a lot more in the way of functionality compared to them as we can all get on a game via it.

The main problem is Logmein squeezed the noose on free users of the service, making the maximum number of people in one 'room' be 5. There are some alternatives, though, and it'd be nice to hear what you guys think. Being able to have anyone interested on the network would really help these arguments to defuse before they even occur, and we could also coordinate game matches as well.

Someone would have to start the problem in the first place. I tried to play mediator last night but failed hard at it; with more people on there's more users informed about the situation and thusly poised to talk some sense into the conflicting individuals.

If you are up for a talk getting a teamspeak server is always useful though it will cost some money. I think it is possible to setup your own server on your comp but I'm not sure. It's also possible to use their public server, setup a room with a password and enjoy. If you need chat service Xfire does it quite well. If you are to setup game servers then legmen is probably the best. As for the similar services I'm not sure.

The trick is getting all of those into one program. So far logmein does it *best*, but there's the 5 person limit.

Teamspeak has it all besides setting up a game. It's fine to have 2 programs you know - one to socialize like Xfire if you what just chat (it's better for ingame chatter than teamspeak which requires you to switch windows) or teamspeak if you want to talk (Good for co-op and PvP in teams, especially in strategy games) while having a server on logmein or a program that allows more than 5 people on a server.

If there's any hope of getting everyone in one lobby it has to be as painless as possible. There are plenty of programs that condense all the functions we need into one package, I've listed them in a poll.

Mumble would be great if it also had the VPN functionality.

People are there online playing something. You can just talk with them or if you want you can join their game, will it be a TF2 round or a SoSE lan party. It will be faster than finding the ultimate package anyway.

A chat client and a game is better than a chat client, a vpn client, and a game client.
