No, I'm currently finding the grey pin-star adapters the most useful. Without them, my gear chains would be useless! The black technic pegs (I think they're called friction-pegs) are good for sticking things together, but not if you want them to he turned by a weak motor.

Anyway, it took me 3 hours over two nights to figure out how to make the turntable work. In the end, the answer was simple. I just had to move the turntable and attached armour up a third-block so the 2nd gear in the chain could fit in with both the turntable and 1st gear. The motor had he turned on its side, not easy considering the awkward shape it has, with a rounded underside. Still, the result is pretty sturdy, and I am quite happy.

Next up: Attaching the REX to the main body, redoing the caterpillar tracks so they can take more weight and don't randomly flip upside down, and adding a counter-weight to the crane arm so that the REX's motor can rotate it (I only have two motors, so I have no idea how I can operate the winch. Then, I have to find batteries and hope the Spybot isn't permanently broken. This is going to be fun!

Oh, gosh. Old-school LEGOs. I assumed you were talking about an NXT (or at least RCX) robot. I haven't seen the old-style motors for years. I guess there're probably still some somewhere in my house, but I dunno where. How are you powering them? Have you got one of the hand-held battery things with the two buttons, or something different?

No, I've got a RCX. It powers the motors the same way it always has: with leads going between the motor and RCX. As I said, I'm using a Lego Spybot brick to provide the engine power.

I thought RCX used engines similar to the NXT, but with different connectors. I could be wrong, though. RCX is the one I have the least experience with. What's a Spybot? If you've got the motor in the picture connected to an RCX you shouldn't need anything else.

EDIT: And now I see the RCX in the picture. Great observation skills, Jedi.

Do you see the purple Lego device sitting on top of the Mindstorms box along the left-hand side of the picture? That's a Spybot. There's another one attached to the back (or front, I haven't decided) of the cran-bot.

Huh. I don't think I've ever seen one of those before.

Its a mindstorm mini-series that was released in the late 90's or in early 2000. People could make a "spybot" and use to a program to code a path for it to take.
Look at this for some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_Spybotics

That's interesting. These are new to me. What do they do that the RCX doesn't?

They have two motors, a bumper, a light sensor, and a laser. So, the same as the RCX, but all-in-one.

What happened to LEGOs? They used to be simple.

These are advanced LEGOs. One thing I know for a fact, though, is that NASA uses them to teach engineering at Space Camp.
