Tiel's WIP Airships Server
If you want to rent the server monthly again, I suggest at least TRYING Creeperhost. Automatic backups, 30GB hard drive space, unlimited data, full remote access and fast support. And I haven't had a single problem with the hosting. And you get to choose the location of the box.
@fr0st: Xenon seems to be about average, although some are cheaper or more pricey. Normal hosting services don't like Minecraft servers, and have been known to terminate their services due to CPU hogging. Dedicated boxes are stupidly expensive.

Yeah, that's why I stayed away from them.
Apparently they're in Germany, so lagg galore.

I'll try creeperhost out then, just like I did Minecrafted.
Heh. I should, like, rent from a different host each month and document my findings. That might be nice resource for would-be admins. Can't say the players would be all too happy, though.

So it's normally a flat rate for a slot on one of these Minecraft servers? I would have thought bandwidth would be the expensive part.
Also, how to these people feel about modded server instances? Do they care?

Re: Tiel's WIP Sci Fi/Airships Server
Some hosts let you alter the server instance's .bat file or offer a dropdown menu. Some offer a more expensive plan that allows you to do so. Some just disable it entirely and will flip you the bird when you ask.
Most MINECRAFT server hosts are a flat rate. Can't scare off the teenagers, now. However, some hosts will give you a designated amount of bandwidth to use up, typically upwards of 500gb a month. I have yet to overdraw any limits, but I can't imagine it'd be good news.
However, if Futurecraft gets enough attention, several companies have been known to go out of their way to provide free or extremely discounted hosting to popular mods in exchange for their logo being plastered on any method of download.

Although you have FTP access etc., I do not believe Creeperhost allows you to modify the .bat (We're talking about the process for starting the server, correct?).
Other than that anything is up to you, but setting it to offline mode won't let you access support.

Re: Tiel's WIP Sci Fi/Airships Server
It doesn't sound like you would need to modify the .bat just to run a modded server.
That's some interesting info. I'll need to look further into this.

I'd be lying if I'd ever seen a host that didn't execute the jar files via .batfr0stbyte124 wrote:It doesn't sound like you would need to modify the .bat just to run a modded server.

If you were to execute minecraftserver.jar or craftbukkit.jar via Java, you'd get a GUI and it'd start, but .bat offers a lot more in the way of flexibility as far as resource allocation, and for hosters that's pretty key. Xenon lets one modify what jar file it executes, but not the commandline itself. For the most part, many companies simply have a dropbox that contains preset mods like Forge and Bukkit or those god-awful compilations that are popular for whatever reason, if they offer the option at all. A lot of hosts simply use Bukkit for server virtualization and adamantly refuse to let the client run anything else.

Re: Tiel's WIP Sci Fi/Airships Server
Creeperhost uses a dropbox with a million and one different .jars, but I have changed it manually before. I just renamed it so the .bat would still point to the right place.

Re: Tiel's WIP Sci Fi/Airships Server
Creeperhost's prices just shot up four bucks overnight -_-

Re: Tiel's WIP Sci Fi/Airships Server
That would be USD tanking. The GBP prices (which they base their rates off) are the same.

We had a state of the union address last night. I guess it wasn't good news?

POTUS saying he will take executive action on climate change is always bad news for the economy.
