Karlyus quickly read over a message from NR command and opened up a broadcast channel to all ships in the vicinity. "This is Captain Karlyus of the NRS Unceasing, and Admiral of the NeoRoman Third Fleet Battalion. Under orders directly from the Hierarchy, I have temporary operational authority over all ships in the vicinity. The orders will be forwarded to your superiors. If you do not comply you will be forced to leave." He paused for a moment. "I'll tell you what I know, and what I think. We know the city-ship doesn't have any shields, and scans indicate their ship weaponry is comparable to human military technology at the year 2000. They wouldn't stand a chance against our shields. And as far as I can tell, this is a civilian ship. Not a military ship." He paused for a second.

"There are 13 craters caused by our nuclear bombardment, but compared to the size of the ship, it's barely a dent in it. I'm synchronizing a tactical map and a secured transmission for coordination on this channel." He entered in multiple commands and activated several mechanisms in the console to send the relevant data. "The Third Fleet will board through crater 1, closest to the center of the ship. We will fan out from there. Hexalani fleet, board through crater 4, closest to the northern axis of the city-ship and proceed along the southern axis. Novan fleet, board through crater 13 along the eastern axis. Crater 13 appears to have impacted the densest cluster of lifeforms. The civilians will likely need medical attention. Federation ships, board through crater 8 on the western axis and head towards the location marked as sector 3. And Nivanshae ships, board through crater 5. Head towards the location marked as Sector 6, another dense cluster of lifeforms. Scans report a significant number of lifeforms still present on the ship. Only fire if fired upon, and aim to disable, not kill. We've done enough damage here today."

The Strigiforme ship approached on of the breaches made by the nuclear weapons, then latched on like a leech to a sealed bulkhead, cutting a hole and releasing 5 teams of 9 soldiers. About half were Strigiforme, the rest a motley group of humans and their variants, and a few others. Wearing pressurized combat suits in case of radiation and vacuum, they proceed down a corridor, checking for lifeforms.

That's a massive unit to be calling a platoon—hell, that's bigger than a company in many armies. What kind of system are you using?

Imperial Guard platoons range from 20 to 60 men, with companies ranging from 3 to 6 platoons. So your 'platoon' would be a medium-sized company even in the Imperial Guard.

EDIT: Whoops, platoons also include a command squad. No idea whether that's a full 10-person squad or not, but either way I think I'm still correct--no way a platoon would get anywhere near 168 soldiers. You're twice as big as even the largest in the IG.

But, like... have you made up a new unit to fill the gap at the bottom end of the scale, or are you sending eight people to do a job that would be more easily accomplished by two? Just sending in three to four times as many soldiers as is necessary/useful doesn't make any kind of sense, but neither does assigning the wrong names to things without reason. I think you've done at least one of those things here.
