I may have fucked up, but at least we're discussing something now. Even if it's just the reasonable size of fleets.

Is someone implying that the numbers spewed out have meaning? Humans just got to colonizing extrasolar space what, 50 years ago and there are human factions blowing through tech like gravitational repulse engines and interdimensional drives. By my estimation, the Batii have, collectively, around 2,000 line ships. That's taking into account 250+ years of interstellar ship production, 300+ years of perpetual lukewarm war between 5 (not indluding United Mundesh) superpowers, and a peak of about 100 semi-colonized planets with production facilities. Really a pretty conservative estimate considering the current naval power of Earth is kind of significant.

Re: Once More, With Feeling
I honestly see no problem with Ivan's fleet size, because at this tech level spacecraft wouldn't be TERRIBLY difficult to mass-produce.
Rough NR stats
Systems: 15 of note, multiple habitable worlds. 3 of the most major systems (Antioch, Aquarius, and Thorian) have 0.5-1 billion people each. Rest is relatively below that.
Ships: Approximately 250. 100 of them are from Hexalan. Of the amounts, they are...
1 Planet Cracker (Dreadnought size, extremely large, still under construction)
0 Dreadnoughts
0 Carriers
0 Battleships
0 Battlecruisers
35 Destroyers
40 Cruisers
80 Frigates
95 Corvettes

I'd say it has more to do with that nothing here really has a good backstory. You have one (I imagine) but haven't fully expressed it at any point. If I may speak candidly, everything else is less comprehensive detailing of the rise of an intergalactic civlization and more brief justification for existence. From what I remember, everyone wants to play around with fleets and diplomacy without the 'hard part' of figuring out the details thereof. That's why there's such a...variation in what's feasible and what isn't, because people create their own standards in lieu of a unified one. It's in essence a bunch of guys trying to imagine something, but never want to come to terms with normalizing their thoughts with those of others. Is that a problem? I dunno, I guess it is what it is. But honestly that's why I think the RP isn't really, well, anything. It isn't a cohesive universe - it was just designed as a passtime for FC development for people to self-express; hardly fit for a main course. Attempts to rectify that have failed.Mercury Steam wrote:Is someone implying that the numbers spewed out have meaning? I'm not saying anything should change (as I doubt it would), just trying to outline the situation as I perceive it. RP is little more than an attempt to manage everyone's creative fantasies and trying to make it otherwise never ends well.
Re: Once More, With Feeling
I started this RP with a general recap of my history because I actually have my galactic introduction date set to about 50 years from RP date. But then I got bored of that. Since then I've just been writing an adapted, detailed version of what pre-combine I already have made up.
If I thought people would actually pay attention I'd put a little more effort into it. For some reason I get the feeling that people don't give two shits about who was the most influential diplomat in Batiss history for four centuries and why he seems to have taken a less-than-minor role behind Nihen. Hell, I'd bet a fair amount that most can't tell apart two recurrent characters from this RP. And that's not unjust, my faction is only one among a half-dozen that could be equally detailed. Which is why I haven't named any minor houses other than Kaal or given the Merek High Ambassador (as well as the leaders of Karth and UM) anything but a title and a disproportionate amount of thought. Haven't even referenced the Merek/Karth or Butik/Karesh rivalries because that would require even more names and characters that would ultimately be ignored.

Re: Once More, With Feeling
@Mercury lack of acknowledgement =/= lack of attention. I can't remember their names (brb while I go back a coupla pages), but there's the Butik/Merek (I think?) Admiral/Ambassador, and the Alliance (who seem to be less shooty of the two). The only issue is, that's only truly relevant within the Batiss' sphere: in all honesty, there's very little reason for the Terran-originated nations to give a flying ('It's not our fight.')
If, say, ButikMerek decided to get the attention of the galaxy at large, your internal politics might mean something.
Also note: Novus is divided into several clans, now. Nobody's mentioned that except me... and yet, I am unconcerned, because that is only relevant internally (for now).

Re: Once More, With Feeling
@ tiel Forgot about the part where everyone's the same distance away from everyone else and technological breakthroughs happen overnight.
E: @Error yeah that's basically what I said. Or, at least, you exemplify what I said. No one gives two shits about any effort to write and then everyone complains when we actually need a decent lore. Either that or they just don't care about quality whatsoever, which is equally atrocious. Stop caring about the story and everything loses meaning; it's not like we have a system. Half of the people here have deluded themselves into thinking that this is actually a game and they're bringing down the people that do give half a shit. If we somehow form a cohesive story that doesn't have elements that seem as though they were devised by an eight-year-old with brain damage, we can use it in future projects. Right now, the little bits of game development that are happening ignore the RP section almost entirely because it's plain unusable. If someone doesn't want to put in an effort to write lore, they should at least try to read it. If you want numbers that make sense, you have to enforce backstories and development that make sense.

Re: Once More, With Feeling
I've been keeping out of this for a while because I didn't want to get drawn into this shitstorm, but I think the fabric of the RP is trying to tear itself apart again into another halfhearted and failure-bounds reset, which I am obligated to stop.
On the topic of Strigiforme; as shown in Cats' wonderful imagery, have traditionally been a major plot engine. This is because they are the only ones willing to use force. Everyone else is allied most of the time, killing everything. I have said multiple times that if human factions would have interfought more, the Strigiforme wouldn't need to be as wildly OP and prominent.
As for Strigiforme fleet sizes here, the Strigi have been around a while. They have a far larger fleet than everyone else, but it'll never be some mega-doom fleet because:
A) Median ship age is ~1000 years old; they're held together welded on armour and duct tape. Weapons systems aren't much better either
B) Computers are shite. Absolutely shite.
C) Strigiforme policy, as dictated by the Council(the horribly inefficient government group), demands a constant defence of inner worlds that's obscenely excessive. Especially Cuuyth.
On the topic of lore; this is a group RP, so lore is going to always be pretty messy. Everyone has different ideas on who does what and how fast and such. The story underlying it isn't as terrible as the actual RP; the story underlying it being the politicking before and during the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Pan-Galactic wars, which the main RPs cover.
What appears to be Cats' issue is that not everyone is a good writer; I know I'm usually not going to put up the effort to be, and I doubt anyone else does. While cats treats this as a writing exercise, I have usually paid more attention to the vaguely present politics involved in the RP, and how nobody else notices it(which is how and why all the treaties Strigi ever make are absolutely one sided). What's more is that Cats seems to integrate individuals into the RP, which is sonething seldom done by most, Fen and Proto being the exceptions. This is another example of how people RP differently.
Tl;Dr: Don't try to make everyone RP how you RP. Also, benis.

Now we only need LJS and the Futurecraft arguing club is collectively dissecting the roleplay...
HOWEVER considering that there is currently no argument that actually goes against "we can just go on again" from what I can tell, I will probably do so in the near future.
