For his sake I hope he won't, in fact I find that there is a big gap in a US soldier's mental preparation for war. There is usually a big gap of expectation in a rookie between first contact and training. Rookies are usually highly motivated for combat, all their preparation and training went into that moment and so every one of them has a secret wish in his heart for his very first fight, its called to "strive for contact" in military terms here and is considered a positive thing, however that first contact is war, and modern wars can get quite bloody. End result is that due to that gap in expectations soldiers are emptied from inside, they detach themselves from outside stimuli to prevent the experience of more mental pain. The severity of this detachment and the duration of it depends on the mental preparation of a soldier for the war.

I think the US soldiers lack on that front, too many of them return mentally empty from wars. I think it has a lot to do with what the US army is for them. For a US soldier going to the army is like going to work, perhaps there will be war however its far away beyond the horizon, you don't think of it nor do you come prepared for it, you just come couse its paid well. Moreover when there is a war you are sent to some hole in the end of the world, your commanders say some big words about world peace and national security but you clearly get its all just random words, your homeland is so far away and the war feels so pointless. Deprived of reason they just give in to feelings and those of them with weaker psyche don't recover. I wonder if the ppl higher up there realize all of that, I believe they should if they were on the front line and experienced it on themselves (which should be the case right ? ), if they do I wonder why don't they do anything about it ? A soldier's prep is all about ensuring he comes home intact, and intact should not limit itself to physical integrity.

BTW what do you do in that war camp thingie ? Do you go to shooting ranges and stuff ? Or just march in cols all the time ?

Camp Humphrey's is one of many U.S. military installations in False-Korea to defend the False-Koreans from the Best-Koreans. I'm here because my dad works here as an engineer. All I really do on base is go to school and pick up games from the Post Exchange. Honestly, my lifestyle has not changed at all moving here. The school is just how you would imagine any other American High school... except we have terror drills... and the air raid sirens were tested just the other day... It's a pretty good size, too. You should see the stuff they're building. Bases around Korea are being handed over to the Koreans as they become more capable of defending themselves, so people are flooding into Humphrey's. Right now my high school has a maximum student capacity of about 3000. We only have 300 students, including the middle schoolers currently, and they're being moved into their OWN building with a max capacity of about 2000 next year! We have competitive sports as well. We compete with high schools on other bases, and I'm proud to say, even though I wouldn't normally care, our (American) football team is the best on the peninsula. I'm PRETTY sure I didn't give away any classified info here.

In other words boooooring , my cousin is currently studying in the Naval Officer Academy in Akko (well despite the fancy name its not an officer school, just a boarding military school). Basically my aunt got that paranoia about local schools and so she sent my cousin to study there instead. Dunno if the education level there is higher, I actually highly doubt it, they do get the rough army handling. First week in they are already running to another CITY along the coast line, diff exercises and stuff, every aspect of their life reminds me my drill camp just unlike me she's gonna be there for the next 4 years, shes not a person who would complain about all of that though. On the upside they also get to go out into the sea on boats, shes now significantly less picky about food and sleeps like a bear in the winter. At least they don't sleep in tents, besides the army stuff they basically study the same things my brother does right now (they are the same age he just goes to the local public school like I did), presumably with better teachers but de-facto in my opinion she will end up with the same scores as if she took the exam here in our home town.

It is actually... Quite boring. But Osan (a base about 30 minutes north of me) has a bowling ally! So that's something. Well, we do have a theater but it doesn't have stadium seating. It's made up for with free soft drink refills though!
