He was a normal-looking middle eastern guy, not special in any way other than being a wizard.
Anyways, he didn't look like the guy in the paintings. That version of Jesus is based on Alexander the Great, or some other great emperor person.

Jesus - that Jewish/Phonecian guy who was like "Yo guys, can't we all just get along?" And the Roman church of the time went all "Nope screw you we gun nail you to a cross", so Jesus-dude managed to get himself a fan club of people who want to get along and be chill, and a smaller but louder fan club of homophobic racist classist assholes.

Thankfully, it's a silent majority thing.

Well Alexander the great was long dead when Jesus first appeared. As for the reason Jesus was nailed to a cross was less religious and more because he could cause an uprising in Judea.

AFAIK, Jesus didn't even want to make an entirely new religion, but rather reform judaism to be less conservative in their ethics (e.g. promoting women not being property). About the "salvation"-thing, from what I know, Jesus never even mentioned any limitations to salvation himself. Those were only introduced in the revelation, which was written by an unknown author (nothing is known about him apart from his first name and there are no outside sources apart form the revelation itself) and would not be considered a "relevant source of information" by any historican. If there is any part of the bible which the holy roman church put in there for their own comfort/power, it would be the revelation. Really, it has the credibility of a Dan Brown novel and the only real reason it has any credibility is the church putting it into the bible. May sound like a conspiracy theory, but keep in mind that people have always manipulated things to gain power, and with the popularity of Jesus, it was pretty likely someone wrote "fanfiction" about him. And since real stuff and fanfiction was pretty hard to pick apart back then, the church would have had no problem putting such a work into the bible for profit.
