Zuguth ran towards the bridge as well.
Once there, he turned towards one of the crewmembers.
"Is there any cargo that can be safely dumped?" he asked.
"Some supply crates and the terrain vehicles are equipped with parachutes, Sir, if that's what you mean."
"Great. Tell the computer to drop what can be dropped and program the chutes to deploy at 1000 meters, and activate the tracers. When you're done run for an escape pod."
"Yes, Sir."
Zuguth turned to the rest of the crew on the bridge.
"All right, the aurelian programmed the computer to try and land this thing, so we won't be needed. Let's get the hell out of here while there are still available escape pods."

"No can do. Not enough thruster power, so the best we can hope for is a fairly flat reentry. I skimped the numbers a bit, but even a four-minute entry is probably going to cause problems."
Coming to a halt near the hangar deck, she checked - the panel indicating no pressure on the far side - and turned, heading further aft, towards the escape pods.

"I see... Yeah a four minute reentry might cause a few problems, but much less than a two minute one. I'd say the minimum safe limit is around five to five and a half minutes."

Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
Nerohm entered the hanger bay, steadying himself with one hand, and holding a data-pad with the other. He was informed that the vehicles would be dumped; he intended to be in one. Escape pods were too unreliable.
He jogged over to the closest one, an all-terrain jeep thing, and it appeared to hover rather than run on wheels. Nerohm opened the hatch and jumped inside, slamming the door behind him. As soon as he did so, multiple alarms went off and the hanger door opened. He looked around before realizing the cargo was being dumped, and when the vehicle was pushed out the hanger, this was confirmed. He had a brief moment to see the ship behind him, tumbling away, before he turned to focus on getting the vehicle operational before he hit the atmosphere.
He tried the controls- locked. He cursed under his breath and then pulled out a small glossy chrome box from his robe. He opened the control panel in front of him and pressed a few buttons on the box's side before dropping it in the panel. After a few seconds, the panel lit up and the controls activated. He flipped a few switches to stabilize the gyro and then took the control stick. He intended to follow the ship.

((You do realise an APC would probably not survive reentry right?))

Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
Orion landed in a jungle. Hard. The door blew open, and he fell out, coughing. He drew his gauss pistol, activated his envirosuit, activated his tracker, and started moving east. Eventually, he found a clearing surrounded by forest, with a, according to his suit, clean lake nearby. He transmitted the coordinates to everyone.

Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
Fen, I have to give my strongest doubts that there would even be an armored APC with a laser cannon in the cargo hold of a luxury cruise ship. Zuguthians are all for sturdy terrain vehicles, but I imagined the maybe two or three vehicles that were in the relatively small cargo hold to be more like futuristic jeep-like things to be used in case of an emergency like this.
And since it is a civilian ship there are no weapons, other than maybe a couple crewmembers with tazers and pepper spray.

Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
Finding the escape pods, aft, Val shoved Solari into one, finding another herself. Checking he was in, she triggered them, dropping rapidly towards the planet.
Hitting the atmosphere, she bit back a curse, watching the rate of deacent slow, then stabilize. Several klicks up, the retro-rockets burned, slowing the pod, and parachutes deployed, yanking it to a sedate speed.
With a resigned thump, the pod landed, and the door opened. Grabbing the medkit and basic supplies, Val jumped out, turning to scan the sky.

Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
The pair held fast to the seats as the very small craft's plasma bloom subsided. Parachutes began to deploy, but ignited from the residual heat. The retro rockets fired, which were likely the only thing that prevented the pod from coming apart on impact. The extreme deceleration caused them both to lose consciousness.

Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
Solari Kicked the door open several feet above the ground and landed, making a rather large crater in the ground. Considering we had help slowing down, the ship probably already landed. where? If we were orbiting eastward, it would be east of us, Plus or minus a few tenths of a degree of inclination due to turbulence. Checking his guns to make sure they were intact, solari wandered in the general direction of val. Moderately scared to open the vent pores in his suit, he did it anyway. The air smells a bit off. Perhaps it was being emitted by the escape pods. Oh well.

Spotting Solari, Val waved, still scanning the sky.
Several plasma trails descended, all fairly close by. Shouldn't be too difficult to get to them. Besides it was a forest. She was good at forests.
She ascended a nearby tree, scampering up to have a better look around.

Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
Nerohm struggled to keep the hover-vehicle behind the tumbling ship, modifying it's hover field every so often, keeping the vehicle out of the plasma plume and, therefore, avoiding disintegration. It was also a good thing that the vehicle was sealed. As they approached the ground, Nerohm noticed the forests, which meant the planet had a breathable atmosphere, but also meant that the vehicle would be nigh useless unless it could hover above them. And he doubted it could. As they approached the ground, Nerohm overcharged the vehicle's hover field while simultaneously deploying the parachutes, falling a great distance behind the ship as the vehicle rapidly slowed down. But it slowed down too fast; the last thing he remembered was the ship impacting a hill a distance away, plowing through a significant portion of the forest before coming to a stop, igniting the forest, before he blacked out.
Re: Grounded: Futurecraft
Solari looked over to val, acknowledging her wave. after she climbed the tree Solari decided to disassemble the escape pods to make a shelter. Solari pushed val's escape pod over, and rolled it towards his. After they were positioned next to each other, solari gutted them. leaving only the metal shell. he cut them, using his laser, into equal sized plates, then cut some of the plates into bars. he put to plates adjacent to each other then welded them together with his laser. Upon completing the plate Solari Welded two of the sticks to the plates, and stuck them in the ground, creating a triangle prism shape.

Val glanced down, hearing the hiss of hot metal. Noting Solari reassembling the pods, she memorized the direction to the ship - or what was left of it - and headed back down, nodding appreciatively at her companion.
When he paused, she said, "Wreck came down almost due east. Best guess, ten klicks and a river to get to it. Apparently Orion got down okay, I got a ping from him."
Sitting on the ground, she drew her datapad, updating the map and checking for more comm pings.
