Culture and social structure is more of an empire thing rather than a species thing; it's influenced by species, but culture develops independently. It should be under empire. Also, you should add a leader field under empire, part of government.
And Shadowcat, you've just got into the RP section and already you're getting a bit on my nerves. Please be careful.

It can stay; it's would be too much hassle to remove.

I refute none of this.catsonmeth wrote:
That's like Shadowcat's job. Remember him on the old forums? He was the only to have the honor of being on my "enemies" list. No offense, Shadow, you're much less bad than you were then.

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
Okay is there absolutely nothing more that can be changed about the faction sheet? Just throw some stuff out there, it needs to be as perfect as we can get it.
E: Oh, and we need to go over some basic ideas of the universe, like subspace/slipspace/hyperspace, the relative size of factions, etc.

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
Personally, FTL is just that. Whatever means one uses (slipspace, jump drives, warp drives, whatever) is just a means to an end.
Faction size? As in space, or population, or both, or none of the above?

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
Idea: Although multiple forms of FTL exist, everyone makes visible distortions in what we call Subspace. Subspace is essentially the space inside space, a sort of dimension thing, another string on the fabric of time and space. Only large amounts of energy can disrupt subspace, so consider it a sort of half-net. Stars are very powerful and emit very prominent subspace signatures, for example. Firing a superweapon is like lighting a beacon in subspace.
Every FTL drive and large energy signature makes a mark in subspace. And since everything in it travels near instantaneously, if you can filter out unwanted interference, you could track anything.

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
Faction size has been an issue in previous RPs. There's no really agreed-upon standard for it. Can a single system be considered a faction? Or a hundred? Or a thousand? Max, min, average? What about large corporations like Darkstar? We could establish a classification system based on amount of power and size.
FTL has a similar issue. There seems to be a few pretty large gaps of reasoning in the "ends," and the "means" have no set rules. Hyperspace and subspace would be extradimensional. Hyperspace is more stable than subspace, allowing ships to pass through mostly unharmed. Subspace is more energetic, but more compressed, allowing messages to travel huge distances in a short amount of time.

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
I still decry the use of subspace.
Just because I'm stubborn like that.

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
Thought, then:
Hyperspace is the normal "FTL" travel. Extradimensional, and speed depends on your ship's power output and fuel and such. Minute details can be worked out.
Slipspace is faster than hyperspace, but far more random - navigation is tougher and exit point are semirandom.
Hyperpulse (placeholder name) systems send messages via subspace, which is essentially the Warp without the chaos gods in. Random, a bit of temporal buggery, navigational derps, but very, very quick to pass through. That said, it's 60% at best that you'll come back out.
Jump drives are either foldspace or wormhole systems, and allow near-instant but high-power and limited range FTL. Thus, mainly used by militaries. Not very dangerous, but risk tearing your ship apart if not configured for it.
Thus, risk-reward and different FTL all at once.

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
Hyperspace would just be the medium. There would be multiple methods of entering, traveling, and exiting.
Also warp.
Also warp.

Re: Standard Faction/Race Information Sheet Format
Well I might not be able to open much beachead this weekend, but I'll try to pull something together. If there aren't any more suggestions for editions to the faction info sheet/timeline format, then I guess I'll make one for the Combine as an example of proper use ASAP and put a thread up for review STAT. Oh, two things I forgot to put up for discussion: system info sheet and technology info. We won't need to document every single planet, but having a list of important stars and their satellites would be nice. Same goes with technology. Something similar (highly revised) to the format I used in my technology thread a while back would do nicely, and something simple for the stars/planets.
Progress will be made by the end of the weekend, I'll promise you that.
Real to do:
-Finalize Faction Info/Race info Format
--review faction info sheets
-Fill Human info sheet and timeline up to first contact
-Ground Rules for FTL
-System info sheet
-tech info sheet
-Ship and Fleet info sheet (?)
-Begin work on Empire RP format
-Finish RP stuff that's irrelevant to restructuring.
Damn, a lot of info sheets. If anyone has anything relevant to say about anything on the list, suggestions or additions, slap it up here and it'll be taken into consideration.
