Nah, humans were sentient before Eve, just primally innocent. I think of them as immortal neutered farmers, but that AFAIK weren't actually neutered, if that makes any sense at all.

That's the thing, it can be awkward(?) to explain, but in Catholic theology there's no problem there, Dostoevsky of all people actually explained it pretty well, I'll see if I can find the quote.
