Arguing about which of two already widely used modern configurations to use is counterproductive (especially if it's for the less efficient, but that's beside the point). Think outside of the box instead of using the 'gun is gun' mentality. Look at some of the weapons from Resistance or Halo, each has a memorable, distinctive appearance (and name) which I think we should be working towards. I'm still for a redesign of the weapons list in order to achieve that.

Re: FC content pack flan's [THREADNAUGHT]
There are two ways of handling a game that has a lot of available weapons. In Halo, for the human arsenal at least, each weapon represents not so much a specific gun as an archetype, and they're named and designed accordingly. They have technical names, but I don't think they ever appear in game; you're not using an SRS99-S5 AM, you're using the Sniper Rifle, which is the only sniper rifle and represents all Sniper Rifles. There's an Assault Rifle, and a Pistol, and a Shotgun, and they're all named and designed accordingly. The Shotgun isn't supposed to look like any specific thing other than a generic shotgun, and the design reflects that; you can guess the name of most of Halo's weapons by looking at them. All of the weapons are thus very distinctive and they all fill pretty totally different roles. A game like PS2, on the other hand, doesn't do that; with eight different flavors of sniper rifle per faction it really can't. Most guns are known by their technical names, and for the most part they're fairly interchangeable: an M77-B is more or less the same as an SR-7 is more or less the same as an RAMS .50. This is perhaps more realistic, and allows for many more weapons, but does make each weapon less distinctive. It sounds like you want the Halo system, which certainly has a lot going for it, but the PS2 system does give you rather more freedom with regards to weapon design, and it'll look kinda weird if we don't pick one system and stick to it. Whoever's designing weapons needs to keep that in mind.catsonmeth wrote:Arguing about which of two already widely used modern configurations to use is counterproductive (especially if it's for the less efficient, but that's beside the point). I was using Halo as more of an example of distinctive design. A plasma rifle looks like a plasma rifle, regardless of if you call it a type 24 directed energy bluh bluh. Even the human weapon archetypes have a style and flair that sets them apart. Resistance has both distinctive, memorable styles and specific weapons/names, like the Hailstorm, Fareye, Bullseye, Auger, etc.Mistake Not... wrote:

No error they won't all be Bullpup.
And I also get enough shit for "copying" halo, I'm staying well away from that style. I'm currently fixing the old shitty guns so they aren't hilariously broken and giving them a half decent model at the same time.

As long as you don't do whatever Tacokingbob (I think it was him) did with taking something that's obviously a picture of an MA5 and insisting that it isn't you should be OK. I guess I've said that your tank looked like a Scorpion, which it did, and that your sniper rifle looked like a BR, but that was in 2012, so I think we should probably be moving past that now. :P

If anything looks similar it's because it can't be helped. There are only so many ways a vehicle or weapon can be laid out before becoming impractical; it's inevitable that you're going to see some overlap somewhere. More often than not the goal of designers nowadays seems to make their variation on 'dual jet VTOL personnel carrier' etc look as unique from the pack as possible given that - most conventional concepts have been exhausted at this point.Mistake Not... wrote:As long as you don't do whatever Tacokingbob (I think it was him) did with taking something that's obviously a picture of an MA5 and insisting that it isn't you should be OK. It's a lot like the gaming industry as a whole imho.

Re: FC content pack flan's [THREADNAUGHT]
Oh, I know. Most of these haven't been too bad. Tacoking's was really, really obviously an MA5, though. He even included the yellow stripe on the top. If he'd said it was that, it would have been fine, and indeed a pretty good picture of one. The problem was that he insisted it was an original design.Tiel wrote:If anything looks similar it's because it can't be helped. Oh yeah, certainly. I remember that thing lol. Gotta give him points for trying, though.

Re: FC content pack flan's [THREADNAUGHT]
According to a lot of people, anything sci-fi looks like it's from Halo, so I can't really win there, (though anyone who spots that the AF-15 is like a vic viper gets a cookie in my book)
I think for the rail weapons (which do look like they are from halo, more so than the tank) I'll add visible capacitor banks under the barrel, and it'll looks somewhere between Halo and District 9.

Instead of having a separate rail weapon category, use a railgun for the sniper rifle. An railgun SMG doesn't really make sense, and it's better to have one of each kind of weapon rather than... stuff.Prototype wrote:According to a lot of people, anything sci-fi looks like it's from Halo, so I can't really win there, (though anyone who spots that the AF-15 is like a vic viper gets a cookie in my book)
