AFAIK Norwegian prisons focus on rehabilitation and stuff.
Think about it: who would you rather meet in a dark alley, someone who has served time in an American prison or or someone who has served time in a Norwegian prison?

Do you really think that rehabilitates him ? Now for your Q I will answer that they are pretty much the same (assuming they sat for the same thing)

So someone who assaulted a person and spent a few years in a prison where "respect" and "human rights" are only made-up words is pretty much the same as someone who assaulted a person and spent a few years in a prison where they were treated as a decent human being?

US prisons aren't known for their friendliness. Scanadanavians, on the other hand, DO focus on rehabilitating people. Like when a bunch of Swedish prisoners weren't locked up, so they made cake and watched movies.

Decent human beings doesn’t mean to demand PS3's , and yes if you know you will have a hell in prison you will think twice before committing a crime, that’s the preventative system. Again Norwegian prisons seem to fail at both, making those prisons almost laughable.

You realize most criminals don't really think about consequences, right? They're trying not to get caught, not planning for prison.

For the record, I do think the Norwegians are on to something when it comes to rehabilitation. However, this has gotten ridiculous, Anders Breivek literally lives better than I do.

While reading the wiki I discovered that "avskjedsklem" is a word.

When you even start to decide whether you gonna commit that crime or not you think really carefully about the consequences of your failure even if you strive to avoid it. If you really hate someone and you want to murder him yet you know that if you get caught you will be executed you will think twice before doing it, believe me you will.

In fact as a closer example that is how this forum and countless others run on the internet , too. If you do something bad you know you will face a ban, you know it won't be pleasant and that is why you think twice before doing it .

Yet another close example that depends on your household though is homework. We all got our homework in elementary school and lets face it - no matter how "mature" you are you didn't like it, you didn't want it yet most of us did do the homework. Why ? Personally I knew that if I come to school without homework and get caught the teacher will write down a note in a special notebook and tell me to return with the note signed the following day and I knew my dad won't be pleased at all to read that note and I will probably face a punishment (not only this but he will also personally oversee the process of making that said homework for the next few weeks or so). OFC it depends on how strictly stuff like that was handled in your home, if it was handled strictly like in my home you know very well by now what dilemma the potential criminal faces when deciding whether or not to commit a crime.

As for rehabilitation , I wonder how would you make a student who clearly doesn't want to make homework actually do it with this method ?

Not necessarily, there are some incredible morons in this world. But I guess a fair few will follow that.
Carry on.

Iv, you assume that criminals have the mental capacity to understand all this, or they're thinking ahead. Many riminals are criminals because they're incapable of working in normal society, so they may not even realize there are consequences.

Plus, who would you prefer - a guy out of rehab who was treated well and fairly, or a guy from hell-prison who was treated like subhuman?

If a criminal is caught and are aware they're about to go into Hell-Prison, they just won't give a damn anymore, and will get even worse. But if they know they're in for an okay time, with education (so they can, y'know, get a job after) and decent guards, they'll likely not go berserk after getting out.

I doubt you will prefer either Error because the outcome will be identical. Yes there are always exceptions Error that is why our prisons are not empty and BTW it has nothing to do with criminals being degenerates or not, yet it is a solid fact that this preventative system works . On the other hand this rehabilitative system ... I get why it is supposed to work and I wouldn't mind it at all , but that crap in the Norwegian prisons is a joke and has nothing to do with rehab whatsoever. Even if the preventative system doesn’t work it keeps the dangerous criminals apart from society for a loooooong time. Instead of trying to argue why my system doesn’t work try to argue why the Norwegian system does, because here it does work, its not flawless but at least it proved itself to some extant while the Norwegian system is far more questionable. How is making them live better than freaking I do sometimes rehabs them ?

Also that goes not only for convicts, for some reason the Norwegians believe that giving out money on useless things in degenerate quantities is going to solve everyone's problems, like the immigrants from 3rd world countries who don't plan to work anytime soon, and why should they ? They make as much as my parents make in month while working countless hours. And money is not infinite you know, it WILL run out and I wanna see your rehabbed prisoners and immigrants then, the Norwegians dig out their own grave.
