Whatever gods we had, whatever love they once carried for us, are gone. For nearly a millenium, they guided our primitive, warlike race on a path of ascendance, of spiritual enlightenment. As we grew, our ways changed. Great discoveries in reason and logic allowed us to cast down our primal instincts and begin a new, golden age of advancement. No longer were we bound by the ceaseless wanderings of prey animals, for we made them our servants. We worked the land, creating legacies that would unfold forever.
Magic, as it was told, was always an integral part of our culture, our existence. It flowed around us like water, strengthening the land and giving life to all that touched it. Powerful mages learned the way of this magic and controlled it, allowing us to do amazing things. Using this, we build massive cities, towering structures, eternal engines, all to serve our advancement. Magic flowed through the heart of all these creations, giving them strength and structure.
But, not everyone believed this magic was only for benevolence. Many rose up, and began using the magic for destruction. Our great nation was split in two, between those who used it for benevolence, and those who used it for greed. A terrible war was fought over centuries, a terrible stalemate. Untold numbers of lives were lost, and a massive, crescent-shaped region was desolated. There, magic was purely concentrated for worse. Nothing can survive there, and it actively attacks anything that enters it. Few can go through and live.
So our continent was split, between the old empire and the new dominion on the other side. We had great rebuildings to go through, and the war was not yet settled. Another century of rivalries passed before our ways changed again. Magic was waning. Our giant cities were crumbling, the engines shutting off, the towers collapsing. The mages were powerless. We once again turned to reason and logic, turning our backs on the gods that guided us, and created the way of science.
As the old gods were forgotten, the new ways began to guide us. Rather than hold our buildings with magic, we used steel and brick. Over another thousand years, we accomplished great advancements. We made men of metal, incredibly strong to all but the most powerful of weapons. We made machines that flew, carrying scores of passengers through the skies. We dug massive complexes, and built great cities. Factories endlessly churned out new goods, materials, our daily needs for our new ways. By now, the gods were merely a legend, a story to be told to children at bed.
And we quickly reached for the stars themselves. Massive ships of metal were built and sent off. Great installations, using infinitely small devices to power massive mechanisms, dotted the landscape. Massive power stations dotted the land. It was an age of massive discovery.
But, once again, it couldn't last. A cult rose up. They claimed that we had turned our backs on the gods of old, and we would pay the price. Unless, of course, we embraced magic once again. We laughed at them. Surely, the gods were no match to our science. We wrote them off, until they struck back. The Dominion, on the other side of the wastelands, had been convinced of them. After working together for centuries, the entire cooperation shattered apart. In a preliminary strike, they launched endless waves of nuclear fire upon our nation, and we struck back. Those of us who could retreated to the stars, fleeing the doomed planet. Countless were left behind in the struggle for survival.
After the nuclear fire had ended, the world was shattered. Something about the war had broken something, an ancient seal perhaps. It doesn't matter. What does matter, is that the planet is falling apart. There are no ships left. We called upon the gods, realizing our mistake, at the preserved temples of old.
They did not respond. We are alone.

This, is Desolation.
You are trapped, along with many others, in the massive, futuristic, but greatly damaged city of Arkhelve. Once the capital of the Empire, it is now nearly deserted. You managed to survive the nuclear fire through cryogenic hibernation, in several armored stations around the city. Everyone else has perished or fled.
You wake up a hundred years after the war. Already, the effects are showing. Though the radiation may be gone, other things still persist. Life has been completely extinguished from the potent weapons. There are no plants, no animals, no mutants. Nothing but you, and the few vestiges of life that went into cryo with you. A few plants, maybe an animal or two. That's it.
The nuclear war has ripped massive cracks into the terrain. Arkhelve is completely cut off by bottomless chasms miles wide, and many have split the streets. They are growing, ever so slightly.
The city, though, is dangerous itself. Apart from the rubble of massive titanium buildings and the chasms, the industrial machines are deadly. Despite the years, many still function. Their damage has spilled dangers. Radioactive sludge, acidic pools, possibly even poisonous gas.
And the robotic army, whether empire or dominion, remains in the streets. From infantry to tanks to massive walkers, whether bipedal or spider-like, they are present. Many are damaged completely. Some are waiting, but for what? Some are deactivated, but some may be online. Whether they see you as a threat remains to be seen.
You have a ruined city, falling apart, and a distant goal- to escape the planet. Survival is just as important. It's your decision how to do it.
Application
Name:
Species:
Personality:
Profession:
Perks (Good things):
Flaws (Bad things, balance with Perks):
Starting Center (North, East, South, West, or Center):
Background:
I will be participating, and ruling as a GM, as necessary. I may provide events for everyone to react to, or only a group, or maybe one, from time to time. For example, if person A says they are walking to the oil refinery, I may say a massive acidic pool is between him and their goal. Or I may not, and person A dictates their actions. Other than that, this is mostly free-reign.
Rules:
-No Godmodding. You cannot control other's actions to a large extent, so try to stick to only your own when you can.
-No OPing. You may loot a laser rifle off a destroyed battle drone, but it can't blow everything up. Everything is old, it probably is busted. Be reasonable.
-No Omnipotence. Like spying on the guy halfway across the city. Please, this is a no-brainer.
-No unrealism. Try to remain within reason. Would you jump across an acid pit to get to a building, instead of going around? I wouldn't.
-You may die. That's fine. In fact, many of you probably will die. Just make a new character, and we'll say he came out of a chamber thought to be unusable or destroyed.
Starting place explanations:
North- The north cryo chamber is in the heart of a massive residential sector. The towers are massive, and the entire place was build around appeal and safety, with function a small concern. Damage is large here, but it took no direct hits, so it's mostly intact.
East- A generally commercial district, with sporadic residential and industrial areas. The cryo chamber is in the middle of a small park. This place is more damaged from wear than from war, as it wasn't an important target.
South- The cryo chamber is in the middle of a massive industrial refinery, once used for metal working. A fusion power plant powers it, and many places are still working. Unfortunately, it took extensive damage from nuclear strikes and wear, so can be quite perilous.
West- More of a governmental place, this is where all the ship docks were, as well as large commercial districts. The cryo chamber is under one such dock. It has taken large amounts of damage, both from wear and war, and can be dangerous in select areas.
Center- The heart of the city. The important government structures, as well as massive residential and commercial complexes, were located here. It has taken extreme damage, and large sections may be dangerous. The cryo chamber is under the main government office.
Now before you went into cryo, you were put into powered armor suits. They were unarmed, but nevertheless possessed multiple useful functions. The suit does not affect agility or movement, but it is currently offline. And you don't know how to work it, nor turn it back on. Think Gordan Freeman's armor suit, but without power.
Welcome to desolation and despair.

Re: Desolation
Name: Chris Herrig
Species: Human
Personality: Exhibits anti-social behaviour but can be chatty. Prefers to stay away from groups of more than three.
Profession: Nuclear Physicist
Perks (Good things): IQ of 165, quick thinking, short (4' 3", this could have positive implications).
Flaws (Bad things, balance with Perks): Indecisive, suffers from medically-induced insanity from experimentation (requires medication), physically weak.
Starting Center (North, East, South, West, or Center): East
Background: At age fifteen her father was killed in an explosion at his lab, where she was present, the blast caused severe damage and during treatment the sedatives did not work as intended and had a negative mental affect but induced increased production of glial cells (glial cells, or glia, are a real thing). Taking after her father, she too became a scientist. This lead her to be employed by a nuclear power plant outside Arkhelve, which she never once set foot in before the attacks.

Re: Desolation
Name: prefers Leais (Official name is Violet-One)
Species: Engineered Human
Personality: Secretive, cautious, sometimes fearful, but dangerous and unpredictable when angered
Profession: Experiment, test subject
Perks: Telepyrosis (ability to affect matter on molecular level), Resistant to high temperatures, stronger bones and tissues, mental capabilities exceed those of most humans, some knowledge of weaponry.
Flaws: Skin is reactive to some radiation (including certain wavelengths of sunlight), Intense thought can cause accidental, harmful telekinetic fits, some kinds of radiation can affect the neurological enhancement, strength slightly less than average.
Starting Center: West
Background: Subject Violet is a result of scientific experimentation. The government was attempting to create a being that was compatible with the equipment needed to manipulate objects at a distance, without physical contact. To survive implementation, malfunction, and any telekinetic spasms, Violet needed to be stronger, heal faster, and have enhanced brain function. New neurotic pathways had to be engineered to operate the equipment. In essence, he needed to be a superbeing. The genetic tampering resulted in some unexpected traits, including purple-black eyes, photoreactive skin, and obsidian hair. Violet had eleven "siblings," all created from the same base DNA, four trios that served different functions, each trio, oddly, a different eye color. Several died during implementation, some during the years that followed, due to genetic defects, some destroyed themselves. Seventeen years after birth, only Violet (who had adopted the title "Leais") and his sister, Grey remained. With the threat of nuclear war approaching, the two were frozen in one of the securest cryo storage facilities.

Name: Ciiyt
Species: Strigiforme
Personality: Quiet, due to being a semi-mute. Loner.
Profession: Strigiforme Explorer
Perks (Good things): Can fly, has talons, can breathe fire
Flaws (Bad things, balance with Perks): Less radioactivity tolerance, needs powerful updrafts to fly for any good distance, fire breath has low range.
Starting Center (North, East, South, West, or Center): East
Backround: A survivor from a crashed Strigiforme scout ship, Ciiyt has only his powersuit left. He was briefly captured by locals, who attempted to study the mechanism by which he spat fire an accidentally damaged his vocal mechanisms, causing him to be unable to make some lower pitch sounds. Escaped in the confusion of the fighting and ended up in a cryo pod.

Re: Desolation
Name: Kashmir Meklar
Species: Human
Personality: Intelligent, likes to help others. Pretty naive.
Profession: Doctor, later field medic.
Perks: Medically experienced, carries a high-tech field medical kit that can help healing most injuries.
Flaws: Not very battle experienced, and not the strongest fellow you can find. Also, the medical kit was slightly damaged by the cryo.
Starting Center: West
Background: Kashmir worked as a doctor at a hospital in the west part of the town, and was chosen as a field medic by the army. He didn't get much experience though, as the bomb alarm went off on his first day. He was put into cryo due to still having sort of a VIP status, as he hadn't officially left his job in the hospital yet.

Re: Desolation
Considering this sounds similar to Wasted, I'll use Zero again.
Name: Subject Zero
Species: Skytherian
Profession: aerospace engineer
Personality: slightly distant, cautious, very difficult to annoy, fears little as he beleives he has seen the worst of the universe
Abilities: Psychic capabilities, potentially very powerful, though its is extremely difficult for Zero to use his more powerful abilities (so would only really use telepathy, maybe some telekineisis, and in extreme cases temporary matter fabrication) rather thick skin. Some mechanical implants, including Phi. Knows a lot about robotics due to previous residence in the NSCD.
Flaws: overusing psychics can be harmful, and may even kill Zero, so Zero will rarely use any of his abilities, thick skin and mechanical implants means Zero will drown easily. Occasionally conflicts with Phi, which affects his physical and mental capabilities, is still coming to terms with is mortality, he may put himself in danger too easily. Any Skytherians that spot him may attack him on sight, depending on their allegiances.
Backstory:
After the death of the NSCD, the New Colonies of Skytheria was run for centuries by Zero, until a conspiracy involving his second in command saw Zero's formerly godlike powers diminished, and his rule destroyed. Zero was exiled. He ended up travelling the galaxy to escape the multiple bounties placed on his head by the now corrupt government of the NCS, eventually finding an adequate hiding spot as an aerospace engineer in Arkhelve, until being forced to go into cryosleep after his cover was blown.

Re: Desolation
Name: Arch-Lord D'laria
Species: Ayleid
Personality: Highly intelligent; but believes that all non Ayleids are puny mortals barely worthy of slavery at the hands of their rightful masters. Although due to his situation, he isn't going to try and enslave anyone; his arrogance makes him quite difficult to get along with.
Profession: Arms officer for the Ayleid military; currently on a mission to observe this planets development to asses whether the population should be enslaved or culled en masse.
Perks (Good things): Very good at killing things, has minor telekenisis abilities (as in can maybe move a human sized object, not dislodge skyscrapers), intelligent.
Flaws (Bad things, balance with Perks): Utterly insane, paranoid and extensive use of psychic abilities induces fits and fainting.
Starting Center (North, East, South, West, or Center): West
Background: Born to an Ayleid Aristocrat, his entire family was killed in a battle with an unknown with a strange ethereal race when he was but 31 (a child in Ayleid terms). He was then took in by the military, and trained with the sunstaff (Like loki's staff) and in infiltration tactics. After 30 more years of rigorous training, it was decided he was ready for active field duty, and assigned to a developing planet to asses whether the population should be enslaved or culled en-masse. D'laria put himself into temporal statis as soon as he heard the sirens; he awoke after the experimental statis device shorted out in a rather spectacular fashion; the device cannot be repaired with any facilities found within 1000 lightyears, and only a few Ayleid scientists at the Ayleid home world know how to.

Re: Desolation
Jack accepted, D'laria accepted, Mara accepted.
Milles is all over the place, and application isn't fully complete. Denied.
And for D'laria, perhaps it s one of the so-called gods?

Re: Desolation
Name: James Miller
Species: Cyborg
Personality: He is a quiet, somewhat introverted person, but will travel/associate in big groups if need be.
Profession: Captain in the (former) special forces.
Perks (Good things): IQ of 160, is a highly trained soldier, knows a ton of survival skills, has a 1 foot-long vibro-blade built into each arm, and is very alert.
Flaws (Bad things, balance with Perks): Introverted, can be startled sometimes by sounds similar to sounds on a battlefield, a bit suspicious.
Starting Center (North, East, South, West, or Center): Center
Background: James Miller was part of Special Forces Group 1-5-A9 from the Empire. When he and his squad were chosen to be fitted with cybernetics to improve combat performance, he had to do it, but was a bit apprehensive. They were then sent to take out a HVT from the Dominion. But somehow, the Dominion knew that they were coming. His entire squad was wiped out, and he was badly wounded. As a result, he was given more cybernetics to help him survive, including both arms and one leg. His heart has also been cybernetically enhanced, giving him greater endurance (blood pumping and all that). He had been discharged from the service after his surgery, but when the bombs fell, he was reinstated and frozen in cryo-sleep, to receive orders at a later date.
