You can, stick it on mouse control mode, I did try to make this work with a joystick, but it failed, mine raft doesn't recognise it.
Although I prefer button mode, but you can do fancy flying with it, except yaw rolls (what most people call barrel rolls)

I knew it was one or the other, but hey, a 50% chance of being right means you have a 90% chance of being wrong, neither one is a barrel roll.
And yes keen you can fly directly up, You can even take off whilst facing up, but you do clip into the ground a little, but that will happen with any plane unless the centre of the model isn't at the very back, but then it would fly funny

Also I'm considering making a PMC post about this (the version I have already released), I mean some dude with a really simplistic tron pack did quite well there.
Anybody got a problem with this?

Depends on what you want it to look like. It doesn't look too militaristic, I'd rather imagine a bandit custom-painting his fighter like that. If that is the effect you wanted then you can make it, otherwise you should try keeping the painting simplistic and instead add different ship parts on it. Also add it a bit of texture so it will look more realistic. Best way to do it is to add noise to it (I actually rarely saw noise on flan's models which makes me ask if there is a technical reason this can't be done but it will greatly benefit the look. Also you can add custom shadows for realism below different things.
Noise is the last thing I do, but I do plan on making different skins for this, so I'll probably make the bandit one first, because it will look cooler, and then the military one.
And but shadows do you mean shadows on the texture or shadows from the actual model?
I have also realised something about the A-144, I have completely unintentionally given it armour peircing capabilities when it uses the MMD or the rocket pod, as it has two guns, but I previously thought that both projectiles exploded at the same time, but they don't so the first one makes a hole, and the second one goes in and blows up whatevers inside, it was only because I shot a testificates house and blew up another on the other side of the village that I noticed this, quite neat.

It looks a bit too much like a tuned car to make a militaristic appearence.
This one isn't meant to be militaristic I'll make a seperate skin for that, and add visible guns into the model.
anyways I JUST FINISHED THE DAMN THING, EXPECT A RELEASE SOON:
