Last night a Revenant supercarrier worth 11,000 US dollars (309 billion ISK), one of only three in existence, was destroyed in EVE. It is the single most valuable ship ever destroyed. That basically sucks.

They don't, it took years for that ship to be made. The thing is basically a supercarrier on steroids. It's a hypercarrier.

As Luna said, the value is estimated. This isn't Diablo III.

Estimated isn't quite right. ISK is arguably as real a currency as any other, and you can get the values of it relative to any other currency just like one issued by a country. There are direct conversions from ISK to US dollars, and there are places where you can convert them. When it says it was worth that, it means it really was worth that, not the equivalent of that. But yeah, those ISK were probably mostly earned in-game, not by putting physical money into it.

And you don't just go out and buy a supercarrier, it is something you have to plan and make yourself.

Your statement was incorrect.

So wait, hold on, I'll just ask my bank to convert my savings to ISK.

It's not a currency, and thus the value is estimated against real forms of money.

It is officially forbidden by EVE's EULA to trade ISK for real money, because people were doing it. You can use ISK to purchase months of subscription to EVE, which gives it a direct value in real money. You can buy PLEXs with real money and trade them for ISK. It is completely a currency, in a way that something like PS2's certs are not. An estimation of its value against actual forms of money would look something like the average yearly income of an EVE account in ISK vs the average yearly income of a person in US dollars. That would give you a good estimate of the in-game value of an ISK vs. that of a dollar. This is a direct conversion. It's not an estimate any more than the number of yen I'd get for 80 pesos would be an estimate. You can look up the exchange rate. Note that the Penny Arcade Report article actually links to the converter between ISK and US dollars.

It may not be a currency, but it certainly does have real world value in terms of money.
