I am an Administrator

I realized a few hours ago that I have been promoted to Admin (IRL stuff has kept me from taking the time to write this for a while). This comes without any more warning for me than it did for the rest of the forum. My question is: What do I do now? I'm not at all sure I want this position, and I think there are several of you that don't want me in it. I'm not very happy with the role of admin at all as it currently stands, and having actually looked at the ACP makes me even more concerned. While an administrative position is needed to keep the forum running from a purely technical standpoint, I do not believe that that position should bring with it any Judicial powers or authority on the forum (although having that position go to someone who is already a developer or moderator in their own right probably isn't a terrible idea). There's no reason at all that that position should fall to me, and although this situation isn't really covered in the forum rules I have gained quite a lot of power without that power being voted on, which is a bad thing even when it's me. This is especially odd given that I've just lost my moderator position; I suppose it makes sense given that I no longer have any other responsibilities, but at least one of the purposes of this election is to shift power away from me, which is all well and proper given that I have had it for rather a long time. So what do I do? I can remove powers from myself and am happy to do so, or I can keep stuff as it currently is, in which I'm filling the role Shiva was (I don't like this solution. Power really shouldn't be concentrated in one person, even if it's me, and I'd be a hypocrite if I said otherwise), or we can rethink the way the position of admin works and then give the power to whoever it is decided to give it to, or we can come up with a different solution entirely. The sheer amount of power here (the ACP is a lot larger than the MCP) means that this is something that needs to be decided and agreed upon by the forum as a whole. I do not feel that I am qualified to make the decision, especially given that I'm the one who currently has the power.

Tiel does all the technical stuff, he has had access to the ACP since we switched forums. Also, you can be a dictator, that is how the Internet is. Don't worry about us becoming fascist or anything.

OMG h4x!

In all seriousness though, I realize I might have overstepped my bounds here.

Shiva last logged in a little over a week ago. I'm not going to assume direct control or anything of that nature, so the best solution seemed to be to simply elevate one of our longstanding members to a position of higher authority than what they held on the old forum. I realize that not everyone here is a fan of LJS, but you have to realize that despite the metaphorical pole up his rear everything he's tried or succeeded at doing has been for the sake of preserving the integrity of the community. On the forumotion board, he saw that necroposters and common rule violations weren't getting corrected, so he volunteered himself to spend his own time in keeping the forum clear of clutter. Later on that same site, he proposed a radical change in how the rules were to be perceived and interpreted that still affects us today, providing a more balanced method of enforcing the rules without relying entirely on the contemporary admin-userbase relationship.

Look, if Jedi seems irritating it's only because he's sticking to the rules rather than making convenient exceptions here and there. I can't think of anyone else better suited to the position of administrating the forum. My only concern here is if/when Shiva returns there likely will be significant clashes of interest, that is why Mackeroth and fr0st have been given ACP access as well to ensure it doesn't go overboard. I myself intend to remove my founder status and step down when this all gets settled down. I only gave it to myself to fix forum issues, and those all seem to be resolved at this point in time.

So...

Mackeroth, Frostbyte, Shiva, Tiel, and LJS all are admins?

I'm not. I don't think I will be in the next few days, anyway. We don't know if Shiva's coming back.

That leaves Mackeroth and Jedi, fr0st only has the power in case something goes terribly wrong.

I promise to not misuse this power. Unless I have access to the word filter, in which case I will be going to town on that bad boy.

De-admin Shiva. She threatened to destroy the forum. It's pretty clear she doesn't want admin from that.

You actually aren't an admin. We just noticed that when we looked at the list. Tiel thought you'd removed the power from yourself. I'm sure you can have it back if you want.

This is what I wanted at the end of the last incident, but the general consensus seemed to be against it. That's exactly the kind of situation I want to prevent, and why I made this thread. No-one should really be in a position to even be able to credibly threaten to do that.

I found the word list. It is weird as hell.

Mouliewop? Really? Who says that?

Also Rautenberg. I checked that one. It is seriously just somebody's name. Who wrote this thing?

That would be the Quizvotin dialect of the language spoken on N'ntradn IV. You don't want to know what it means.

THIS. I've spent the last 15 minutes talking at Tiel and hyperlite about this. The list is really screwy. It corrects 'dike', as in 'if you pull your finger out of the * all the water will come through'.

So you are an admin after all? You're not listed as one anywhere. The plot thickens.

But this thread was supposed to be about deciding what we should do with admin power in general. Back on topic! Back, I say! Back!

Classy, Tiel.
