Story Reborn !

Post by Iv121 » Thu Dec 13, 2012 11:49 am

I move the story from the old forum to the new one. Also due to the problem I encountered there I will cover the whole first page in place holders so that I won't run out of space, I still welcome comments and suggestions and of course that single press of the button in the poll above you to show me if I'm on the right direction.

Chapter 1 - The Trial
Spoiler:
It was one of those warm spring day that we can see in the end of the Month of the Evening Star. The flowers in the open valley have just begun to wake up from their winter sleep and life filled the once snowy landscape. With the appearance of the first flowers preparations begun for the Equinox and the arrival of the new year. This also meant that soon Kail's trial will begin.

Kail came from a poor family from Rivenhill, a small settlement not so far from the capital - Noor-Aylard. The long war against the Garroks took its toll on the local population. Most of the men from the village were on war and came home rarely , including Kail's father who served as a formation commander. The families were paid for their service but this money was barely enough and the women and children left behind had to work in the fields. Now as the Equinox was upon them the villagers hurried to the big city to buy stuff for the celebration. Kail had a short cut black hair, so closely resembling his father's. The short legionary hair cut was mandatory among the regular troops which made it most common in the war-riven Alderion

==>

Kail went to the river to catch some fish for the celebrating. The women will later cook those and cut off their tails, as they say "so that the year will head forward and not tail backwards". He thought about the journey ahead of him: Soon he is becoming 16 which means he should leave his home for the trial like all men women of his age. They have to bring back something useful for their people and cannot return before their task is complete. Some head to the military, some research into a matter and bring the results of their work to the people, others bring money. Others prefer the older traditional trial, just like Kail did. Pupils of famous teachers could be given special tasks to complete, usually they carried a lot of meaning and danger involved but at least you knew what to do. Kail knew his trial already and this knowledge bothered him even more.

Kail was a student of the famous Master Corus. This fact is quite surprising including the low status of his family, but luckily Master Corus didn't pick up students by money but by talent. His talent for Void magic was found in young age but his parents didn't have enough money to send him to a master. Instead they gathered the money they could and sent him to a gymnasium in Noor-Aylard. It was a place for the common people to achieve more than their parents did and so many parents collected their last money to send their children to study in gymnasiums.

==>

One day he met that selfish bully , Darec son of Cartius. He was a son of a rich aristocrat. Was expelled from a bending school for his behaviour and from that day he bullied students in kail's gymnasium. He was called behind the back "Sewer Rat" for that time he was punished to clean the sewers in his bending school. As Darec went through the school crowd, pushing anything on his way aside, he stumbled across Kail. "Step aside worm" he told kail in his weird loud voice. Kail had to step aside that day, or maybe not. Darec approached to push Kail aside but he pushed his hand away. Darec, surprised by such development tried to hit Kail in the face but he moved back and his hand missed. " Heh you think you're tough ? I gonna teach you how to give respect !" he said. By this time all students around already gathered in a tight circle to see what's going on. " The sewer rat is gonna smash Kail" told whispers around as Darec prepared to strike. Kail being lighter than his opponent managed to evade Darec’s punches . Darec striked another time into Kail's face but he blocked and hit him fast in the stomach. Darec then tried to kick Kail but missed again , getting another punch in the stomach. "I'll smash you at the wall" he said and prepared to use his void magic . He sent a thich wave of pure force energy at Kail, pushing him away and throwing him on the floor. Darec sent another wave that hit Kail. He stood on his fit and managed to evade the wave. Another wave hit his torso pushing him back and then another one. It looked like Darec is indeed planning to smash Kail against the wall. Darec who saw the victory on the horizon stroked again, hoping to throw his opponent on the floor. Kail saw the coming wave but instead of dodging he put his hands in front of him, and hit the wave, pushing it back into the surprised opponent pushing him back. Kail quickly rose his hand and created his own wave that hit Darec. He then stroke another wave in Darec's legs, sending him flying to the opposite side of the student circle that closely watched the battle. Darec prepared to stand up again but then fast footsteps were heard from behind "Step aside step aside" . Professor Aren, one of Kail's teachers stepped into the student circle. "What's going on here ?!" he said, "Kail Sceptii ... follow me". Kail followed the professor passing by the grimly smiling Darec, hearing behind him whispers "Kail got in trouble".

==>

Professor Aren took Kail to the professors' halls. Kail was guessing what would be his punishment as they approached Professor Aren's room. They entered the room "Sit down Mr. Sceptii “ said the professor. " You know how disappointed I am in your behaviour Mr. Sceptii and you know what awaits you" . Professor Aren was ready to tell his verdict "You know that in our gymnasium there are strict rules and those who breach the rules will be punished or expelled". Kail was afraid of those words "...expelled". " And yet I believe a single fight is not a reason to expel students" said a voice behind Kail's back. Kail turned around to see an old man in a robe standing in the doorway. "I believe you already chose the students you want Master Corus ? " . "Yes indeed" he answered. " There is no need to punish that student anymore, I will take him with me" he said. Professor Aren clearly didn't expect that, and Master Corus told Kail " follow me". Kail never actually knew what captured the Master's eye - they way he stroke Darec or the fact he stood against him.

The fish slowly filled Kail's basket as the thoughts slowly filled his mind. He knew what he has to do. He will go beyond the portal into the lands of the old people and find there the key to defeat the Garroks and end the war.

Chapter 2 - Hard Lessons
Spoiler:

As the sun slowly set down the air filled with the magical smell of the holiday, literally as the food was almost ready. Happy children ran around playing tag, impatient to get their gifts. A big square of tables was put in the middle of the village with a big bonfire in the middle. As the first star appeared in the sky the whole village set down around the table. Elder Megar, the head of the village set in the middle. Usually the heads of the families set near him, including Kail's father but they were at war. Only the women, elders and children remained.

" As we sit here on the gateway top the next year our beloved husbands and sons fight in the war against the Garroks . Let's warm their night with our best wishes and drink for their lives so that they'll return home with the heads of our enemies !" , " for the return of our heroes !" the sitting answered elder Megar. After a short pray to bless the upcoming year the food was served. Kail haven't seen his father for a long time. Each meeting with him was important for him. He served as a formation commander in the diversionary cohort. As the war around the great wall became more or less entrenched the generals sent troops behind the enemy lines on board the Void Ships to disrupt enemy supplies, scout the area and strike at key points. This meant that they remained longer on the front line and returned home less frequently.

" This year we also part with our son who grew up and became ready for his trial. May the creator bless you and you will find your way back with victory, Kail son of Mark Sceptii !", " For the return of Kail Sceptii !" the sitting answered and another glass was drank. His thoughts drifted again to the task at hand.

==>

Life wasn't easy under Master Corus. His mansion laid in the countryside not far away from Noor-Aylard. The mansion consisted of the Master's house, the students' rooms, a big courtyard and a nice green garden where the master liked to meditate. Even though it wasn't that far away from his home Kail had to move to the mansion and live there. As he carried his sack of items he was met by the gate by a smiling boy of his age. "So you're new here ? My name is Allen, son of Gyan Nectimii , c’mon I'll show you around " he said smiling. Kail followed him to the Students' wing. "The boys live in this room, the girls are on the second floor. Here put your stuff here, this bed is empty." he said. "It's dinner time soon so you probably want to change that ... stuff you are wearing for something better" he said giving Kail pants and a tunic. The other students probably were not used for poor people .

Kail went with Allen to the dinning room in the master's house. Around the big table the student's already set. Kail took the seat near Allen as Master Corus entered the room. Some of the student girls entered the room with some dishes and after a short pray for the food the feast began. The table was a quite noisy as the students discussed all sorts of things. "So where are you from ?" asked Allen, taking another chicken leg. "Rivenhill , not far from the capital " , " I’m from the capital" he said chewing the chicken. "People come here from literally everywhere. I have no idea how the Master manages to find them all. Actually in which bending school have you studied before ?" He said. "I didn't, I was just a gymnasium student" Kail said. Allen looked a bit surprised but then smiled again "That's what I'm talkin about, I have no idea how he manages to find students in those places but if you're here means you're worth something". Kail actually didn't know if he should be in this place or this is some sort of a misunderstanding. The table was quickly emptied and the students started leaving the room. Master Corus stood up and walked towards Kail. "You will wash the dishes with today's team" he said and walked out. "Cool you're washin with me" said Allen and pulled Kail's hand. "C’mon let's go". Kail was probably surprised with that duty on his first day, but he was probably even more surprised by the pile of dishes in front of him. "Girls cook the dishes, we wash them" said Allen who noticed the surprise on Kail's face. After half an hour the dishes were washed and the Kail went to the boys' room.

There was still time left until lights off and the students were talking with each other. When Kail entered the room everyone stared at him. One asked "So what's your name ? ", " That's Kail son Mark Sceptii , he's a freshy " answered Allen before Kail could even say a word. "So you're from the countryside ?" another asked "Rivenhill yes". "How long do you practice void magic ?" , " I... I'm not. I studied in a gymnasium" . Kail was expecting a laughter but instead he just got surprised faces and more questions "If you're here probably you're worth something" one said. They asked him about what did he do to attract his attention. He told them about his fight with Darec. The conversation suddenly turned into discussion of the move he made. Kail felt some relief he won't have to answer more questions. The lights went off and the students went to sleep.

==>

The next day Allen woke Kail early in the morning. The sun slowly rose from the mountains afar and the students went to the courtyard. Master Corus waited for them there. "Today we will practice our force waves " . A disappointed sigh was heard from the student line, from which Kail understood it was quite a basic move. "You cannot progress further in the art of the magic without perfecting the basics. I want two straight lines over there " He pointed. Allen went to the opposite line in front of Kail. "I said straight lines" Master Corus said pointing at a gap in Kail's line. Grudgingly one of the students filled that gap, which looked quite weird for Kail. "Now everyone to starting stance" he said. Kail tried to do what the others around him. Master Corus quickly went through the lines and fixed wrong stances. He closed to Kail, pulled his arms a bit further and his legs a bit lower and moved on. "Now remember that when you create a force wave you push your body energy through your arms, through the air into your opponent. Feel how the energy circulates in your body, to your hands and from them. Feel how it passes through your fingers and push it forward" he said, pulling his hands forward and unleashing a big force wave forward. " And remember that energy is flowing. You can direct it through your body as if it was water in a river. Now first row strike the second row, second row deflect the wave back into the first row. Keep deflecting it until I say stop". Kail tried to focus on the wave and pushed it forward. It appeared a bit small and went off course, but Allen deflected it straight into Kail. The wave hit his hands and he was pushed a bit back. "Don’ worry it'll get better" said Allen. Kail sent another wave forward and then heard a falling noise. One of the students in his row just flew straight through the courtyard a few meters, it was the guy who stepped into the gap. In front of him stood a young girl. "oh that's Emily, she's the best student out here" said Allen. She was also around Kail's age. She was beautiful. Many girls could be jealous of her perfect thin body, long light brown hair , glowing blue eyes, shiny mysterious smile and of course her talent for magic.

Another wave hit Kail and he almost fell down. "Yea focus on the trainin you can try to hang out with her later" he said laughing. Kail pushed a wave straight into him and surprisingly Allen almost got hit himself but managed to catch it and send it back into Kail. He actually caught the wave and barely managed to send it back. He felt exhausted after all this work. "Alright enough for now, I'll give you 10 minutes break and I will soon be back" . Kail HAD to sit down. "You're not that bad considerin you never learned void magic". "I feel like my hands will soon fall off" Kail answered him. "Well I think you use your own energy to create those things so feelin like that is kinda natural" Allen said. "You don't look exhausted" , "yea basically it wasn't that bad ..." .

==>

Master Corus came back. "Alright the break is over. I want training pairs over there. No need to stand all together in the middle the courtyard is big I want free space around each pair" he said. "Emily follow me". Master Corus and Emily went towards Kail "Could you practice with him a bit ?" he said "Yes master Corus" she quickly replied. "So you're new here ? You need to keep a bigger gap between your legs like this so that your stance will be stable" she said pulling his leg a bit forward "Yes , now let's see what you got" . She pushed her arms to the sides and sent a big force wave into Kail. The wave hit him hard sending him flying back. Kail stood back and went into a starting stance again. Emily smiled slightly at him "Not everyone can get up after such a punch , here is a smaller one". Another wave hit Kail. He couldn't raise his hands on time and the wave pushed him back. The stance worked well and he didn't fall to the ground. Another wave went his way, he caught it and barely managed to turn it around. Emily pulled her hand forward into the wave shattering it. "Not bad, try to use the wave's energy in your advantage. Let it flow through your body freely and exit on the other side, imagine it flowing". She sent another wave at him, he deflects it again. Though this wave went better than the previous one he still felt the whole weight of the wave on him. His powers ran out fast and he felt like another wave would crash him. "Alright enough everyone. Today's team goes to clean, the rest can rest". Kail went back to the students' rooms, barely standing he fell on the bed. His training was only beginning.

"As the new year descends upon us new challenges await us. May the fortune be on our side and may we pass all challenges awaiting us", "For the challenges yet to pass" the sitting answered him.

Chapter 3 - The egonium Flowers
Spoiler:

4 days of training and kail still barely made any progress. The pain in the back became a standard issue from the numerous falls and every single day he collapsed on his bad exhausted. He recalled a positive side in the situation as sleeping became sweeter than ever. Allen tried to cheer the him that everyone is that bad in the beginning but even he barely believed in what he said. Actually kail wasn't really listening to him at that point and slowly fell asleep.

The next morning Kail woke up relatively fresh. The pain in the back was gone and for some unknown reason his mood also improved, maybe because it was Saturday. Kail and the rest of the students hurried to the courtyard for morning exercises. Master Corus went out of his house and went to the court yard. " I want two straight lines here" he pointed. "Also Ralf, Kail and Eve follow me". Kail followed master Corus. He went to the garden behind his house. It was a quiet place. The path led to a small open square in the middle of the garden, surrounded by tree and shrubbery. On the other side Kail saw a small lake with crystal clean water. Master Corus entered the square and Kail and the other two students stood in a line in front of him.

"Sit down" he said, sitting on the stone floor of the square which was surprisingly warm. "Today we will practice Gravity fields with you" he said, pushing 3 balls in front on them. The ball slowly descended in front of kail and landed near his feet. "In order to move this ball from it's place you must first understand what Void Magic is " he moved his hand forward and lit it up in a purple flame " For centuries our ancestors practised the Void school of magic to understand what it's truly is. Many Great Mages searched for answers they seek in the nature surrounding them. When the void mage looked around him he couldn't find anything, he couldn't see the power he is manipulating, but he could feel how it floats in his body. He felt where the power came from - from his mind and soul. Unlike elemental magic we do not manipulate curtain elements, we manipulate the flow of energy around us and so we manipulate the rules of nature. We make things fly , move , appear and disappear. we use the most powerful energy source to power us and we use our mind to direct that power. A powerful void mage doesn't need his hands , he can effect his world with his mind only."

"Now have a look at the ball in front of you. Imagine that you pull it up with your hand, feel how the energy flows from your mind to your fingertips and from them to the ball. See how it warps around the ball in a strong field of magic. Now move this field with your hands and push the ball up". Kail slowly rose his hand. He focused on the ball and tried to feel the energy passing trough his fingers. The ball started shaking a bit and then going up into the air. "Good, feel the ball in your hands, and now throw it ". Kail pushed his hands forward and saw how the ball flew to the other side of the square. Master Corus moved his hand stopping the balls mid-air "And now catch them" he said throwing the balls back. Kail wasn't ready for this. He knew he to move a standing object but the ball closing on him was moving and fast. Kail closed his eyes pulling his hand forward. When he opened his eyes he noticed the ball flying in front of his hand. He breathed with relief and the ball fell down. "As you see you don’t need an object to create a gravity field. You can create it anywhere you want, just imagine and feel it in front of you."

Master Corus went to see how the training in the courtyard is going leaving Kail ad the students alone. A cheerful looking girl closed to Kail "Hey I'm Eve and you must be Kail. I'm not that good with magic actually because things tend to blow up in my face and go wrong but you get used to it I mean to the fact things blow up all the time and not the explosions because if I was used for the explosions they wouldn't be a surprise and I like surprises because they are so unexpected , do you get surprises often ?" . Kail looked at Eve . She was a cheerfully looking girl a bit younger than him with a light blond, almost white hair. She had a big and a bit awkward smile on her face. Kail didn't know what to say, or what she just said. Eve opened her mouth to speak but Kail quickly said "uhh I'm sure you will get better with it , it is something that needs some practice" , "Do you really think that ? Nobody said me anything like that since I went here or before that in the Grimstone Bending school or at home or ... " "Yea I got it" Kail replied nervously "Oh I was talking a lot again ? Sorry I just tend to keep going on and on about topics like that time when ... oh yes sorry ". "Eve will you ever let him to breathe ? " Said Ralf. He was a big muscular boy with a short brown hair and a bit square face. He looked tough but kind.

Master Corus came back inviting the three for lunch. Kail set in his place with Allen. Today they both had to clean the mansion's garden together with Mordin , Eve and Emily. After lunch Kail and Allen went to the garden. Eve was already there moving around a leaf with magic. Shortly after Mordin and Emily came. They had to clean the path and square from fallen leaf and garbage and clean the water in the lake. They were ready to start cleaning but then master Corus came . "Today you will not clean the garden, instead I have another job for you. near lake Romare not far from here there is a small field of purple flowers. Could you bring some for me ? " . "Yes master " Emily answered. "Good then get to work" he said and walked away. " So where is exactly lake Romare ?" Asked Allen "To the west from here " answered Kail "I know that area, let's go" . They went on the path that lead to the capital then turned to the Edged Mountains in the west. The entered a small forest. In the middle of it there was a small lake. "The river that passes near our village falls into this lake " said Kail "there are also strange howls coming from this forest so we better watch out".

The Purple flowers the master was talking about were on the opposite side of the lake. They went closer to the field. It was filled with flowers, much more than the master asked for so completing the task was easy. As they arrived in the field they started collecting those flowers. Suddenly they heard a strange howl. A few wolves appeared out of the bushes. They had a dark brown fur and big horns on their head and body. Those were Wolf-Boars. Kail quickly went into a starting stance even though his magic knowledge to that point was quite limited. The wolf-boars rushed forward towards the students. Emily quickly pulled her hands to the sides sending a huge force wave. The wolf-boars flew trough the bushes back into the forest but others were already around them. A wolf-Boar jumped towards Allen who quickly sent his own force wave towards it. Another wolf jumped towards Eve who pushed her hands forward creating a gravity field. The wolf ran into it and started flying helplessly around "My gravity field actually works ! " she said trying to create another one. As soon as she moved her hands away the wolf fell to the ground, and then pushed away by Emily "So my Gravity field still doesn't work " Eve quickly remarked. Another wolf jumped , now towards Kail. He focused on the wolf and slowly rose his hand up. The Wolf helplessly stopped mid air. Kail then pushed his hand throwing the wolf 6 meters away. After hitting the ground the wolf stood back and together with the other wolves slowly closed on the prey. They were surrounded. Emily started creating a slightly glowing ball between her hands "everyone crouch " she said, pulling her hands to the side , sending a force field all around her , smashing the wolves against the trees. All five then ran back towards the entrance of the forest "over there to the left, now to the right " shouted Kail leading them out of the forest. The hungry howls of the wolf-boars could be heard in the distance. They hurried back to the mansion.

Master Corus waited for them at the gate. He took the flowers and went with them into his house "Master Corus what are those flowers for ? " asked Eve "Those flowers, the Egonium flowers, have some very special healing abilities. Their Nectar can be used to treat many different poisons . It also has a very lovely taste " he said smiling. "You are going to eat them ?!" asked Emily "No , no, for now I will keep them but I have the feeling we are going to need them soon..."

That night in the students' room Allen told about the wolf-boars and how Emily tossed them around. People were always wandering how does she know those moves. They tended to remind her unusual force field tossing which became her signature move. She was crossing her arms and then pushing them aside like the wings of a bird, her smooth, fast and gorgeous movement was adored by the students. Master Corus tended to take groups of students and train them in person, only her he took alone. It was then when she probably learned those moves as they were too complicated for other students to perform. It was hard to tell because nobody has ever studied in a group with her. Kail also noticed that the lesson with Master Corus improved his magic and he slowly started getting it. Maybe he is not a lost case after all.

End of third chapter.
Chapter 4 - The Mind Games
Spoiler:

It was a nice Sunday morning. Master Corus gave the students a day off as usual and some money to spend in the capital. Kail, Allen and Ralf agreed to go to the capital together. The void people were quite talkative. In order to survive in the harsh conditions they faced long ago they had to be together. The students preferred to go together as they found the walk much more interesting this way. Kail was approaching the gate as he noticed a few men on horses. Those were the sapphire guards, the king’s personal guards. They wore a heavy curved Nepheline armor, similar to the one used in the Legion. They had a long black cape and blue feathers on the top of their helmet. Kail also noticed one of their horses was missing a rider.

It was hard not to ask what the personal guards of the king were doing in the middle of nowhere. Suddenly Emily appeared. She approached the sapphire guards. Allen noticing the surprise on Kail’s face noted “Yea we forgot to tell you she is the king’s daughter”. Kail noticed , by her manners, that she was part of the upper class but he didn’t expect a princess to get her hands dirty in the master’s courtyard. “Her father wanted to give her a private master but she refused and went here instead. She is sort of that bad girl that never listens to her father. He even sends his bodyguards to make sure she gets to the palace. ”

Their talk was interrupted by Eve "I sort of didn't really find anyone to go with, I mean I could go with the others but I sort of don't want to ... " "alright alright just don’t start all of it again " said Ralf. The Sapphire guards were already gone by then leaving a trail of dust. They could use a few horses thought Kail but he guessed they'll have to use their feet as the others. There were two paths to the capital. The first was to take the road to the north through Corinth and then join with the main road, the other was to go to the west through Woodville , pass Romare river and then join the main road near the city itself. "Hey my aunt lives in Woodville and I haven't visited her in a while. we might take the west road and maybe she will give us something nice" said Allen. There were no objections and the group went west.

Usually things are quiet in the outskirts of Noor-Aylard. The vast stone roads leading to the capital are well patrolled by the city watch to insure safe passage along the most important road of the void nation. The countryside around it , while not as heavily patrolled like the main roads, is still safe for passage. The small dirt roads connecting the villages to the main road are usually ignored by bandits and looters. The only danger that could probably be on those roads is the animals roaming the local forests. Usually those show hostility only when humans got too close to them so most conflicts can be simply avoided if the creatures are not provoked.

The road went through the forest. It was quiet and warm. The sunlight occasionally passed through the trees creating beautiful light rays. The road was a bit curvy so Kail couldn't see what's ahead. Eventually behind one of the curves a small village appeared. The void nation banners slowly waved on a small gate. The village was quite silent. People went to their duties without paying too much attention to the travellers. Allen went to a small house near the main square. He knocked on the door "Aunt Ellice, aunt Ellice ! It's me Allen". The door opened and an old woman appeared. She was in her 50's , with blue sad eyes and a white hair collected into a knot. She wore a simple brown dress and a white apron. "Oh it's you darling ? come in come in, and invite your friends of course".

She gave them a cup of tea and some bread she had left. "You know you shouldn't go this road nowadays" she said. "Why is that aunt ?" asked Allen "The road seemed fine to me". "People are recently disappearing around here. First it was that merchant that went around the villages and sold goods, then it was Lotius and Henry and others too. The went out for their Business through the Northern road and never returned. since then we go all the way around through the western road". "So how many people disappeared since ?" "Ten, nobody ever heard from them again. Poor families, if they don't loose their husbands to the war they loose them to the bandits. It is terrible ... ". "We got to find them, at least something to tell us where they are" said Allen "don't go there , please, we've lost enough people to this road already " said his aunt. "You better go the way you came, you won't be able to help them". Allen thanked his aunt for the warm welcome and all four went to the main square.

"We gotta do something about those disappearances, we can't just leave them there " said Allen. "Maybe but what can we do ? They are probably dead already" said kail. "Even their bodies, at least something " he said. "So what's the plan ? Are we going back to the western road ?" asked Ralf. "No we go to investigate" said Allen. "I have a baaaad feeling bout that" said Ralf. They went through the Northern gate. The Northern road was similar to the western one just less curvy. The four kept going. They watched carefully around them for any clues or ambushes. The silence of the forest accompanied them. Kail could occasionally hear a bird somewhere nearby but most of the time the forest was silent as if no one was there. Suddenly they heard a cracking noise. They turned around and saw some movements. All four jumped to starting stance , shaken. " Wait a second it's just a dear" Ralf gasped. It was indeed a deer. It stared at the travellers and suddenly he turned his head to the right and ran away. "There is someone there get down " whispered Kail and they all went behind a bush . "How can you tell ? " , "the deer must have ran from something and it wasn't us".

Three dark figures appeared. They were three men, relatively young in green tunics . " I'm telling you I saw someone coming this road" one said. " It was probably that deer there is nothing out here. I'm telling you we gotta go elsewhere those villagers are not using this road anymore" "and what's about the captives ?" , “we have no use for them anymore, we can leave them in that cave, end of story". The three men went into the forest. "C'mon we gotta follow them" said Allen and the four went after the men in the green tunics. "I guess we found our bandits".

The three man went to a small mountain nearby. near it there were a couple of tents and people. there was a cave in the side of the mountain slightly above the camp. "There are at least twelve of them here" said Ralf "too many for us, maybe we could sneak by ?" said Kail "those two guards near the cave ? no way we can do it" said kail. "So what we gonna do ?" asked Eve. There was a silence. " look there - she looks older than the others " said kail "Wow no way..." Allan cynically remarked. The woman was around 70 years old. she wore a green robe and looked quite distinct among the younger people surrounding her.

She spoke to the people around her "so you say there was nothing out there ?" , "yes
Master Merile “ “We will need new subjects soon enough, we will have to move on”. “Subjects ? are they doing experiments on them ?” “Dunno Eve, guess we’ll find out” answered Kail. “So any new bright ideas ?” . Two men in green tunics passed near them. They picked up a crate on the far end of the camp and moved it to the cave. “see those crates ?” said Allen “that’s our ticket. They quickly ran towards the crates. It seems like the bandits kept their loot in those chests. Ralf and Allen took one of the crates, quickly carried it to the bushes and emptied it there. They put it back and Allen got in. “now you kail”. They both picked up another crate, emptied it and put back, Kail got in. Suddenly they noticed the bandits coming. Ralf and Eve went to hide in a bush.

Kail heard the bandits outside of the crate, then he felt how he was picked up. “Damn those things are heavy, bet we had to open it and move in parts”. Kail’s heart beat like crazy, he felt every step in the tinny crate, suddenly he was dropped down. “Ahh my back hurts so much, let’s make a break before we pick the other crates”. He heard the bandits going away. He slowly opened the lead. He was in a cave. Around him laid crates, mostly empty. He could see the entrance to the cave . He couldn’t find Allen’s create though, he was alone.

On the other side of the cave he saw a door. He went towards it. It was locked by a wooden log between the door and the wall. Kail took the log out and opened the door. The room was pitch black, he could hear movement but couldn’t see anyone. He took a torch from the wall and went in. In the middle of the room there were four stone columns with a few people tightened around them. They looked exhausted and dirty. One of the prisoners turned his head towards Kail. “You … are not one of them …” “be quiet I’m here to help”. Kail quickly went back to the storage room. He took a sword from one of the crates and cut the ropes around the columns. The prisoners slowly stood up. “So what will we do now ? “ one of them said “Now ? Let’s get some revenge “ another said taking a sword from a crate. “there are twelve of them out there, and that old women . If we strike fast we’ll be able to take most of them down by surprise” said Kail “So let’s do it” a prisoner said and they went to the exit.

The two Guards near the cave entrance were talking among each other. Two prisoners quickly hit them in the head turning them unconscious . The other bandits noticed it “The prisoners are escaping !” the camp immediately turned into chaos. Two bandits were just on their way to the cave with another crate when suddenly Allen jumped out of it hitting one and sending a force wave at the other. Ralf and eve jumped out of the bushes too. Eve could land a successful wave on another bandit sending him flying into a nearby tree. Ralf just rushed another bandit and hit him in the face “Six down !” .

The bandits quickly reorganized themselves. They went into a stance and started casting something. A light green beam slowly flew out of a bandit’s hands towards one of the prisoners. He said some random things Kail couldn’t understand and fell to the ground. Another bandit in front of Kail started casting. Kail quickly sent a force wave in the bandit’s direction. His wave went off-course barely hitting the bandit. The bandits cape flew off, revealing the bandit’s face. It was a girl of his age. She looked differently than most girls he met in the void nation. She quickly casted her own string of green light hitting a prisoner near Kail. The prisoner turned towards kail and tried to stab him with his sword. Kail jumped back in surprise. The girl moved her hands as if she as controlling a doll. The prisoner went towards kail in unsteady steps. Kail sent a force wave at him laying him on the ground. The green light disappeared. The girl casted another string, now towards Kail. He jumped to the side trying to evade it but it followed him. Suddenly the world around him started to change. Different colors appeared and disappeared, shapes transformed and a terrible buzz was heard in the head. Suddenly it all stopped. Kail opened his eyes to see how Allen sends the girl flying in the air. Another bandit appeared in front of them. Allen was ready to strike his foe down when he suddenly casted a spell. The green light covered the bandit and he disappeared. Suddenly Kail turned around hitting the air behind him. The air suddenly transformed into a knife wielding bandit. The strike went straight at the bandit’s face stunning him. Kail quickly gave him a good kick to finish him off. He didn’t know how he knew the bandit was there but he was glad he hit him.

Ralf and Eve ran deeper into the camp. Two bandits appeared in front of them. They casted the light rays towards two prisoners. The prisoners suddenly turned towards Eve and drew their swords, preparing to strike. Ralf and Eve quickly pulled their hands up , picking up the prisoners into the air and throwing them aside “Oh sorry I didn’t mean to … “ Eve was suddenly interrupted by another light passing right above her head, hitting a group of prisoners. The prisoners slowly fell to the ground.

A quick glance at the battlefield revealed two persons standing in the middle of the ruined camp – the master and a bandit, the one Kail threw away. The student quickly stood between her master and the Kail. The master seemed calm. She smiled with her old face revealing missing teeth. She wasn’t preparing to cast any spells, she was watching her student as if she was facing a test. Kail and the others quickly went into starting stance, preparing to strike, so did the student. Ralf started first. He created with his hands a force ball and pushed it at the student. The student jumped to the side and cast her spell. Her body was covered in the green light and suddenly she disappeared.

The four starting circling around trying to find her. Suddenly Kail noticed a few leaves cracking on the ground. He turned towards the sound and sent a force wave. Though the force wave hit it’s target revealing the student it barely effected her. “it’s not the time for mistakes” he thought. The student quickly cast another spell, hitting Allen. He started wandering around, barely walking, talking about colors in his eyes. Eve reacted to it quickly by sending her own force ball at the student. The ball hit her target but her technique was flawed too. The ball barely effected the student. She casted another light, now at Kail. Suddenly his body became to move. He tried to stop it, tell it go elsewhere but he couldn’t control his body. Suddenly everything became bright. He could barely see anything in this light. He felt something weird, relaxing passing through his body, he couldn’t feel it anymore. Suddenly it all became black as he felt his body hitting the ground. His vision became better and he could see how the student is sending another light at Eve. She began to move heavily towards Ralf. Ralf casted another force wave towards the student but she was evading his strikes. Suddenly Ralf rushed towards her sending a wave on the move. This move took the student by surprise. The wave hit her smashing her into a tree.

Ralf no turned towards the Master. He picked up a sword from the ground and ran towards her. He closed on her and slashed her with his sword, only to discover his sword is actually passing through her. The master suddenly disappeared and reappeared right near him, striking him with a curved knife. Ralf noticed her and tried to evade but it was too late. The knife hit his left hand. Though the wound was quite shallow Ralf suddenly fell to the ground. “It is too bad I will have to kill you personally. This knife contains a very rare and powerful poison , there is no use in fighting back” . She prepared to strike as a powerful light beam stroke at her. She was hit by that light and sent flying into the mountain. Master Corus ran went towards Ralf. “It’s no use … you cannot cure the poison … “ she said. Her green robe was completely black now, burnt. “Egonium extract is always useful to have in stock” he said giving Ralf a yellow liquid. The effect was almost immediate as Ralf slowly stood up. Suddenly Allen’s Aunt has appeared together with other villagers “Oh thank good you are alright” she said running towards Allen who just got over the weird spell that was cast on him.

“How did you know we’re in trouble master ? “ Allen asked. “Your aunt went to me and told about your idea” he answered . “I just knew you won’t give up on this idea, I had to get some help “ Allen’s aunt said. “But how did you know we’ll need those Egonium flowers you told us to get ?” asked Kail. “One day you will answer this question yourself” he answered smiling. “and what was that magic ? I’ve never seen any element such as this”. “We divided magic into elements for hundreds of years, we learned to master one, to perfect it and use to our advantage but we never saw the whole picture. The division into elements is something that we forced on ourselves. There is no real boundary between the elements, they are all whole. Some areas of this whole were never studied , such as the illusion spells they used “. “So why did we force this division on ourselves ? Wouldn’t we be more powerful without it ? “, “one day you will answer this question too” he smiled.

Chapter 5 – The flow
Spoiler:

While Kail couldn’t enjoy his Sunday his friends will sure enjoy it for the next few days as tails about it spread around. The terrible headache after that encounter lasted for the rest of the day and Kail didn’t want to do anything besides lying on the bed.

The headache was gone the next day. Early in the morning as always they went to the courtyard. Master Corus was waiting for them already. “I want two straight lines” he said pointing at the middle of the courtyard. The lines quickly assembled and he began the lesson. “Today we are going to practice force shields. This is the most basic and useful defence tool of a void mage. Now go to starting stance”. “You know how to create force waves. You create a force field in your hands and throw it as a wave at your opponent. Like the force wave, the force shield starts from the same force field, now create one”.

Kail raised his hands and a transparent ball appeared in his hands, much smaller than the others’ balls though, as it was always the case. Kail struggled to make it bigger. He focused as much as he could, tried to force all his energy into that ball but it didn’t respond. “Now, unlike a force wave, while using a force shield it is important to learn how to sustain it. Push the ball right outside of your body and hit it with your hand. Let the energy spread around into a thick shield”. Kail pushed the ball forward and then let it’s energy out. The ball grew into a round wall and disappeared.

“ Now as you saw your shields didn’t last long without sustain. Learning to manage your energy so not to waste too much of it is important. Pushing the force ball like you did will protect you from powerful blows but only temporary. In order to keep your shield intact for longer time there is no need to send the whole field. Imagine as if it was water. Direct this water with your fingertips forward and then hit it like you did with the field. The energy will form a shield in front of you.”. Kail did as he said. The thin flow of energy followed his fingertips and spread around forming a shield. It did not disappear immediately but started to slowly fade away. “Try to maintain your shields. Dedicate just enough energy to keep it up. The energy should freely flow through your body to your hand and into the shield “. Master Corus went through the lines to see the shields. Kail tried to keep the shield as long as he could but he felt tired and his shield slowly faded away. “Now lets see how well you use them in battle, first line sends a force wave at the second one, second one absorbs and sends her own wave”

Kail created another force field and pushed it forward with his hands. Allen created a shield. He had some trouble sustaining it too but quickly overcame the wave and sent his own. Kail focused on the shield, pushed his hand forward and prepared for the wave. The wave crushed into the shield and almost passed through. Kail sent another wave. Allen crushed it easily and sent his own wave back at Kail. He raised up his shield but it was too weak and the wave passed through, hitting Kail and pushing him backwards. “You do not feel the flow” noted master Corus. After what seemed to him like infinity the lunch break finally came. Kail felt tired. He fell on the ground more than any other lesson he had.

After lunch Kail went to get a short rest. Suddenly master Corus said “Kail, follow me”. He lead him to the backyard near the lake. There was a small wooden platform near the water. They went to it. “sit down” he said. Kail set down. “It is a nice day isn’t it ? The sun that warms the air and the water around us… a good day for thought and meditation. Tell me Kail, would you like to drink that water ?” he pointed at a dirty small pool. “Not really isn’t it ? It is tainted and possesses little value. Our soul is a great source of power. Unfortunately we didn’t quite learn how to use it’s most pure form. We have restricted ourselves with our thoughts and feelings that do not allow us to fully understand this power and use it, We put our limited experience and knowledge to limit the flow of energy to create a small tainted pool of energy we can actually use” “like that small pool” “exactly, but if we remove those obstacles and let the energy flow freely” he pulled out a few rocks that blocked the water in the pool “we will be able to use pure energy” as the water flowed through the pool the water slowly became blue and clean “Are you ready to try ?” “Yes master”.

Master Corus stood up and went to the square behind them. “The most basic thing you should know is that our energy is not physical but mental. It doesn’t come from our muscles . Now put two fingers on your arm, near the hand, can you feel the blood passing ? Follow the vein on your hand. Do you feel anything ? “ “I … I don’t know”. “ Create a small force field and now let your fingers absorb it. Move them again on your hand.” “I feel something going through me”, “now stop moving your fingers, do you still feel that movement ? “ “yes, it is hard to describe it” , “this is the pure energy. Now move it to your other hand , and now both hands. Now to your fingertips, and now to a force field” Kail created another transparent ball. It was significantly larger than the last one. “Again, move the energy through your hand, with your fingers. To the other hand, to the fingers and out. In, through, out. In, through, out.”

“When we guide the energy through our body we divide it into two parts – positive energy and negative energy. We tunnel our way through the flow of energy , separating it into two. “ “So if both the positive and negative energy is not there what it is then ?” “The void. The energy cannot sustain this state for long and collapses back into one, flowing forward through the path. The art of curving those paths is the core of the void magic, to manipulate the void, Now dismiss your force field”.

Kail lowered his hands and let the force field disappear. “ Now feel the flow coming through your body in. Good , in , through , out” . Kail created another force field, he felt how his whole body fills with strange feeling, he felt the flow, the guided the flow, the became the flow, or at least that’s how he felt. “Not many can that easily feel this energy, usually you need many years of practice to learn to differ the tainted energy from the pure one while you have learned to do it in a hour. Your technique still needs some work but with your new knowledge you will be able to keep up to the others.”

Master Corus and Kail went to the courtyard. The break was over and the students were waiting in there. “I want two straight lines”. He quickly pushed the lines and put Kail in a gap in the middle. It was an unpleasant surprise to discover the source of the gap standing in the line in front of Kail. “This is gonna hurt” he thought looking at Emily preparing her force field. He started preparing his own. Emily shot a force wave straight at Kail. He pushed his own force field and created a shield. The wave hit the shield pushing Kail back but the shield survived. He created his own wave and pushed it forward.
After a few hours of intense practice Kail felt he handles the shield technique more or less. His hands were still hurting as much as they did in the morning but this was considering he was repelling Emily’s waves. He went to the students’ quarters and set on the bed. Allen looked at him with approval. “Hey you are actually improving ! Told you not to worry too much” , “yea … I still do it wrong though”. The chatter in the room slowly faded away as the lights went off and the time to sleep came.

The following morning they went to the courtyard s usual. Master Corus was already waiting in the courtyard. “Today we are going to practice some more moves, I hope you slept well because from now on we are going to beat a hell of a practice every day”. The students started whispering and guessing the reason for the drastic change. “As you are wandering what is the reason for this change it is because from now on we are preparing for the Void Tournament “ .

Chapter 6 – The Ethanimus
Spoiler:

Preparations were already on their way for the Ethanimus celebrations. The streets of Noor-Aylard were full of pilgrims and travellers. Kail went through the streets of the busy city towards the great market. It was a noisy place with lots of people. The market was overseen by the city watch. Formations of soldiers went through the main street and guards patrolled the market. The great market could have attracted a lot of thiefs and thugs but the city watch guarded this area well. They also ensured the fairness of the trade, checked the gears regularly and the prices themselves. The main street leading to the market square was surrounded by workshops. Kail's favorites were always the blacksmiths. The shiny legionary armor and the curved Palandros sword always filled his imagination with stories and adventures. This time though he passed by the blacksmith and went to the market square.

"So where the hell do we find Noorian Carrots here ?" asked Allen looking at the giant market square "I dunno, lets just go somewhere" Kail answered. "Yea we'll SURELY find something in here. It's just great - they have literally anything here and we still wont find what we need ... " . They went to the closest stall line and went through it. The line was perfectly straight and quite wide, allowing the crowd to easily pass through. Merchants offered their goods from the stalls trying to interest the passing crowd with their goods. They found the Noorian Carrots faster than they thought somewhere in the middle of the row. They bought a full sack of carrots. "So we have 1 golden coin left for the ceremonial wine and we have all we need" Allen noted.

The Ceremonial wine was sold near the great temple of light. They went back to the main street and took one of the ring streets going through the city. It lead to the western side of the city where the great amphitheatre and the great temple were. As they passed by the great amphitheatre they saw the preparations for the ceremonies and the void tournament.

It was in the times of old when their great patriarch Aladarn learned the ways of the void from the great void dragons. He set 7 months on the top of mount Ethan and learned the ways of the void and on the full moon of the 7th month he returned from the mount with the void magic in his hands. And for this they were said “7 days you will celebrate, from moonrise to moonrise of the full moon”, this was the meaning of Ethanimus. The void tournament was the closing celebration of the festival.

The giant amphitheatre was filled with the Aldarian flags – a big white dragon on the blackish background. Flower pots were put on the tribunes with thousands of colourful flowers, the remnants of the disappearing summer. One balcony in the middle of the tribunes was especially well decorated. It will be there where the king will watch the games. The sighting of the giant structure filled Kail with an awkward feeling . He knew almost nothing about void magic and he will be about to fight in a middle of that arena with tens of thousands of people watching.

They went by the great amphitheatre into the light square where the great temple was. Most of the other students got much larger shopping lists for the Ethanimus but Kail was given only two tasks for a reason: A giant crowd of people blocked their sight of the large podium where the ceremonial wine was sold. The best wine was sent to the temple for a rigorous check. Then it was sold at the great temple. Everyone needed the wine and so many went to the great temple to buy one. They weren’t cheap too. A few formations went between the crowd to keep a clear path to the temple doors. The crowd waited for their turn to the side of the temple. Kail and Allen took their place in the crowd. The crowd moved forward relatively fast but the process was still painfully slow. Kail wondered why couldn’t they build more podiums if this picture repeats itself every year.

Finally their turn had arrived. They stepped forward to the podium. A priest was standing there offering the wine. “We need two wine bottles “ said Allen. “25 silver coins each” the priest answered. Kail took out the golden coin and gave it to the priest who quickly took two bottles and gave them. “May the Creator bless your path” he said quickly and addressed the next buyers. They went around the podium to the other side of the square. The sun was already setting to their left so they hurried to the city gates.

When they returned back home it was already night. Kail already used to call this place home even though he spent a short time in there. The food was put into the basement storage room. It was a cold and dry place, perfect for storing food. This food will wait there until Ethanimus evening so this evening they will get the usual meal. The students set around the table. They were exited about the upcoming tourney and discussed many different matters.

“ So you think we have a chance ?” , “I dunno, I heard this year many schools signed up like the Taurus Banding school” , “You mean those guys who took last year’s tournament ? I heard they play really dirty” “and that they are one of the best too …” “I really hope we won’t shame our master” “We’ll be fine of nobody screws this up”. Kail’s heart fell to his stomach. He didn’t want to break it for everyone else.

They went to bed but kail couldn’t fall asleep. He imagined how he screws it all in front of the huge crowd that laughs at his pathetic tries, the face of his master, his father. His face filled in sweat as he turned around in his bed. He turned around again but still couldn’t fall asleep. He stood up and went outside, maybe some fresh air will help.

He went to the backyard. A bright crescent moon lit the dark sky and cicadas chirped in the forest. Some fireflies flew around. Kail went towards the lake when he suddenly heard a voice. “Can’t fall asleep Kail ? “ . Master Corus stood near the entrance to the house “Yes master”. He went down the steps towards kail and they went towards the lake. “What bothers you in such a quiet night ? It is the tournament isn’t it ? “ “Yes master … I don’t want to participate in it” “You do want to participate in it but you are not sure of your abilities. Don’t you want to put them to a test ?” “Yes but I’m not ready” “To be your true self ? Don’t you dream of an adventure ? Will you surrender your fait ? The future is in your hands.” “Wish I could master really” “I’ll tell you what, lets practise a bit and I’m sure you’ll change your mind.” Kail didn’t think anything could change his mind but he was ready to try.

“Go to starting stance, good. As void mages we influence the energy around us, manipulating the laws of nature around us and binding them to our will. What I’m going to show you now is a basic way bind gravity to our will. Create a force field like that” he created a large glowing transparent ball “Now extend this field, just like you do with a shield. Put one hand forward and one hand backwards like this” He created a large transparent ball around him. “Now let the energy lift you up, don’t be afraid to let it free. Now lean forward to fly forward “ suddenly master Corus began floating slightly above the ground. He leaned forwards and quickly flew to that direction. “Now you try”.

Kail created a force ball and began extending it. He put his hands as the master said. His body slowly rose above the ground. “Don’t be afraid of the energy, try to feel it and predict it’s behavior “ Kail leaned forward and he began moving forward, or falling. He felt like his body is being pulled forward as if he was falling forward. Suddenly he lost control and fell. “It will require some practice. You need to feel the force field up to the point you can control it intuitively. Try again” . Kail returned to starting stance and created another force field. He leaned forward and he started to move forward again, much faster than before. He leaned to the side to avoid a tree and flew towards the fence in a desperate attempt to turn. He crashed into the fence. ”try again”. Kail created another force field. He leaned forward and began flying around. He flew through the trees slowly along the stone path. He leaned to the right and began flying around the house. He slowly began to accelerate more and more. He turned around, make another loop around the house and returned to the backyard. He stopped near the master and dismissed the force field. “Very well, one day you will become a good mage “. He smiled and set down at the wooden platform near the lake. Kail went back to his bed, this time he fell asleep fast, mostly because he was so tired after this outburst of energy. Yet he felt much better.

End of Sixth chapter.
Chapter 7 – get in, get out
Spoiler:

In the morning the students found that two stone pedestals were placed to each side of the courtyard. The stone pedestals were covered in carvings and had four dragon sculptures sitting on the sides of a flat bowl in the middle. Master Corus was waiting for them in the middle of the courtyard. “I want a straight line here” he pointed.

“Before you can go to the void tournament you will need to know one more thing. The energy that flows in us can wear different forms. We as void mages know how to convert this energy into useful forms. You already know how to use force fields, now its time to learn a bit about another of it’s forms – the lighting”

“The lighting is a much more pure form of energy. It behaves more like it’s origin than the force fields you used until now. We create a path for it separating positive and negative energy, just like we do with energy inside us. This time however you should learn how to do so with the space around you. move some energy to your fingers. Now imagine a line in front of you, this is the lighting. Move your hands to both sides of the line. Now pull them back as if you pull something along this line, in and push them as if you throw it out. Pull , push. Pull , push”

He went along the line to correct stances. “Very well Kail” he said and moved on. Those moves felt similar to what the master taught him about pure energy in his body. He could feel the flow between his hands but he couldn’t see it.

“Now lets practice a little”. He drew a long line in the middle of the courtyard. “Now I want two lines on both sides of this line”. Allen went to the opposite line. “Now everyone on each side of the line is a team. Your objective is to hit everyone on the other team, with this” He moved his hands and created a big lighting ball. And Kail thought they will just throw with Allen some invisible lightings at each other... Now they will throw big deadly lighting balls at each other. The teams went back from the line (Seems like the others think like Kail … ). Master Corus then launched the ball at the second team and the game has begun.

Emily was the first to jump on the opportunity. She caught the ball and launched it at Kail’s team, pull and push as the master said. The ball went at some unlucky student who simply jumped out of the way before he gets fried. The ball suddenly turned around and went back at Kail’s team. Ralf barely stopped the ball and redirected it at the other team. Emily didn’t miss this one too launching it straight at Kail. Kail wasn’t ready for the ball and barely stopped it mid air, turning it around and throwing as far away from him as he could. He could feel the heat when it passed between his hands. The ball went off-course, leaving the boundaries of the courtyard. The ball then turned around and went at Allen. Allen preferred to dodge. The ball went past him and almost hit the ground, then suddenly changed course and went back at the other team. “Faster faster ! Smoothly ! Remember that energy flows !” Shouted master Corus as the ball flew through the courtyard, smashing at it’s next target.
Suddenly it hit one of the students ain kail’s team. Everyone looked frightened at him, expecting him to burst in flames at any moment “Ouch, my chest “ was the answer, everyone could breath in relief. “Remember that as void mages we do not only control it’s direction but power too” said master Corus.

He made another lighting ball and sent it straight at Kail. Though the fact he wont burn to death was relieving he didn’t take the chances and dodged. The ball turned around and went back at him. He dodged again and the ball flew at the other team. Emily quickly caught it and launched back at kail’s team, hitting one of Kail’s teammates. Master Corus launched another ball, now at the other team. Emily caught this one too and sent it at Kail’s team hitting again.

Soon enough kail’s side became almost empty with a few people remaining. Kail was dodging all the balls, Ralf was catching them from time to time and sending at the other team but Emily was quickly intercepting them and launching back at them. Another ball flew right above Kail’s head. Ralf quickly went to catch the ball. He caught it barely and sent back at Emily hoping to hit her. She quickly caught this ball too and sent it at Ralf who didn’t have time to dodge nor catch it. Kail was alone now.

Master Corus created another ball and sent it at the other team. Emily took the ball and launched it at Kail, he jumped to the right. The ball turned around and went back at Kail, he jumped to the left. Emily caught the returning ball and sent at Kail again. He was jumping and dodging as the ball went back and forth as if someone is playing a bad joke on him, tossing the ball back to Emily’s hands. People were laughing slightly around, the sight was funny indeed. Kail was getting tired. Emily caught another ball and sent it at Kail, faster than ever as if she could smell her victory in the air. Kail was ready to dodge but suddenly he froze in place. He pulled his hands forward and prepared to catch the ball.

The ball flew straight between his hands. He created a path for it as if he was pulling it, suddenly pushed his hands forward and threw the ball at the enemy team. It splashed into one of their team who was still laughing at his attempts to dodge the ball. Everyone looked surprised at Kail. Suddenly his team burst in cheering. Master Corus created another ball and sent it at Kail. He caught the ball and sent it at the other team. In the back he could hear his team cheering “Kail ! Kail !” . The ball hit his target. Master Corus sent another ball at Emily. She caught it and threw it, but instead of throwing it at Kail she threw it upwards. Suddenly the ball turned around and started falling with a blazing speed at Kail. He jumped aside but instead of smashing into the ground it flew back to Emily. She was moving he hands as if curving a tunnel for the lighting somewhere away from her. The ball flew towards her obeying her commands. She caught it and launched at Kail. He prepared to catch the ball, prepared his hands but suddenly when he was ready to catch the ball it changed course and went to his left, taking a small turn back at him. Kail dodged to the side. He had no idea how to catch something like this.

The ball went around and back at him. He made himself as if he was ready to jump but instead quickly pulled his hands forward to catch the ball. He quickly redirected it back at the other team. It felt less obeying then before but he could still handle it. The ball went at Allen who jumped out of it’s way. The ball turned around and flew back at him. He didn’t noticed it and it hit him straight in the back. Master Corus sent the ball at Kail. He could notice a small smile on his face. Kail caught this ball and sent it as fast as he could. It felt natural to him when he overcame his fear from the ball. He could feel the energy flowing through him as the ball passed by. He didn’t notice the heat anymore, he felt the energy instead. The ball hit another one in the other team. Master Corus sent another ball at Emily who was ready to finish this game. She quickly caught the ball and sent it into the air. The ball went quite slow up and was weirdly moving in an inconsistent pattern. Emily was trying to do something with the ball. She was unsure of her moves but suddenly a slight smile appeared on her face. The ball started moving straight and suddenly split into two. The first ball turned down at Kail, the second one was following it from behind. Kail dodged the first ball. It went back towards the fence. The second ball corrected course towards Kail. He caught the ball and sent at Emily. Suddenly he felt something closing on him, it was the first ball coming back from the loop. He jumped aside as the ball passed a few Centimetres from him. Emily caught the second ball and sent at Kail. He caught the ball and launched at Emily immediately as he saw the first ball coming towards him. He jumped aside. On a positive note it seemed like Emily couldn’t control both balls but it didn’t prevent her from sending them at him again at again. He felt tired, his hands hurt and breath was unsteady. He sent another ball at her dodging the other one. The second ball was closing on him and he was ready to catch it but suddenly he felt something closing from behind, it was already too late. The ball hit Kail in the back and he fell down. He felt a slight pain as if he was stung in his back. He opened his eyes and went to stand up. Someone gave him a hand, it was Emily. He stood up. She smiled at him “Good game” . It was time for a lunch break.

The lunch went nicely for Kail. Everyone talked about the match and his comeback. Analyzed moves and shortcomings of each other and talked about the upcoming tourney. “Hey you did great out there “ said Allen. Suddenly he pushed Kail on his back “Heeey !” “That’s for the ball in my back” he laughed. While everyone discussed their things Kail thought about how natural it felt to him to redirect this energy and how he could feel it. It felt strange and new. He didn’t understand how he could catch this move so fast while the others took him so long. Maybe it’s because it felt similar to how the master taught him to use energy, or maybe those moves are not that terrible after all. He was glad he passed the force fail stage of his life so he probably won’t have to fly across the courtyard ever again, that’s of course if he won’t be put against Emily.

After lunch the master was waiting for the students in the courtyard. “I’m sure you all know about the void tournament, many of you probably saw it. Many heads nodded around. Kail never was on the void tournament. It was a privilege of the wealthy or at least the middle class. He couldn’t effort to go to this tournament. He didn’t know anything about it besides it was a spectacular religious ritual, and an expensive one. “The tourney comes from the great trial patriarch Aladarn passed on mount of Ethan. The dragons wanted to test his skill and courage. He was faced with a task – to transport what can’t be taken in a form that can’t exist. He had to take pure energy from the dragons and bring it to their podium, without loosing the energy. The bounds and laws of our world are not known to the void mage and so they were for Aladarn. He took the energy with his bare hands to the podium and was rewarded with knowledge. In the tourney there are two pedestals with two ball of pure energy This energy cannot be manipulated the was you are used to. Your task as a team is to bring the energy ball of the enemy team to your pedestal. The one who holds the ball won’t be able to use his magic and if the ball falls to the ground it will disappear , reappearing at it’s pedestal. As said, easy to get in, hard to get out “.

“On both sides of the courtyard there are two pedestals. I will create two energy ball and put them on the pedestals. Your task is to take the opponent’s ball and bring it to your pedestal. The teams that were before seem to be fine. Remember that teamwork is the key to Victory.”’

The team quickly gathered together to come up with a plan. “So we need a protecting team and an attacking one. Who’s going to attack ? “, “I will” said Eve, “And I will !” said Ralf “I’ll crush em’ !”, “I’ll go too “ said Kail. “Alright so the rest on the ball. How we gonna bring theirs’ back though ? “, “Just get in – get out huh ? Wish it was that easy” ,“I say all on the ball and get it done with ! “ said Ralf “so that they sneak behind us ? not a chance”, “We need everyone on front as Emily will give us hard time” “So that she sends us flying all together ? I told you we need two teams for this” , “Or attack and defend in the same time.” Said Kail. “And how do you want to do it ? “ . “Have you ever seen a Legionary Phalanx ? My father is a Legionary. The Cohort forms into a live wall of shields. Each man covers the man to his left with the shield, the small hooks on the sides of the shields hook those shields together into an impenetrable wall. They let the enemy to crash into the wall and throw all what they have on it. When they are exhausted the Cohort pushes them back, punching with the Palandros through the shields. Eventually the phalanx breaks up and slaughters the first battle line then forming again to move on the enemy. The whole formation keeps moving forward while covering the other troops, acting both as defensive and offensive units. What I suggest is t create one big Force shield tougher and push as close to their pedestal as possible. We can leave a gap in the middle so that they will have to focus on two different groups. If they try to pass through the gap we can strike at them easily from the sides. Once we close to the pedestal we can try another trick. When the legionary cohort closes on the target it separates into battle formations. Each formation covers itself with the shields, using the same hooks, to create a shield sphere. Each formation is 16 men in size. We can send the attacking team forward in that shield while the defending team will keep the phalanx and lay covering fire. We get the ball, the two others cover with the shield and we safely walk away.” “Sounds good on the paper …”, “Lets give it a try and if it doesn’t work let’s just do it the ordinary way “.

The two teams formed around their pedestals. Kail’s team stood in a line right in front of the pedestal. “remember to keep up with the phasing, I will count”. The team prepared their force fields. The other team was ready too. The other team stood in a chess-like pattern throughout the other side. “May the best win” said master Corus and the battle begun. The first two rows of the enemy team became to close slowly on them. “everyone prepare” said Kail. The first enemy line prepared their force fields, ready to fire. “Push it now !” shouted Kail and the team raised their shields which quickly connected into a big one, right on time. A shower of force waves crashed into the shield put it held. “On my go, now !” said Kail and the formation became to move. The other team looked confused. The second row became to throw force fields. “now separate the wall” said Kail and the wall split in two. “One , two , stop. One , two , stop !”. A shower of force waves hit the walls again. The other team was disoriented. They threw the waves inconsistently , sometimes at the left side, sometimes at the right. “Push through the gap” someone said on the other team and the first line began to run towards the gap. Kail and Ralf quickly stepped out of the shields sending a force wave at the incoming force. The strike landed well, sending some flying back, the others pulled their shields and became stepping back. The wall slowly closed on the enemy pedestal. The other team threw more and more force waves but the shields easily held them off. “Go back !” Said Emily “Around the pedestal !”. The enemy team quickly ran back towards the pedestal and formed a thick living wall around it. They quickly put their own shields and prepared to defend . “stop” shouted Kail. The wall stopped 2/3 of the way towards the pedestal. “Let’s go” he said.

He , Ralf and Eve quickly stepped out of the shields and formed their own big cone. They began marching towards the pedestal. Emily stepped out of the shield and began unleashing strikes at the cone. Kail and the formation stopped in place. The strikes hit hard and they couldn’t keep moving. Strike after strike she was closing to collapse their shield. “Go back “ said kail and the cone slowly moved back into the friendly shields. “It’s not working we gotta do it another way” said Kail. “Start stepping back “ he said. The formation slowly began to back off. The other team looked confused but suddenly jumped on the opportunity to begin an offense. The three lines formed again and they began throwing force fields, together this time. It became harder to hold the shields but still possible. “Stop “ he said again. The formation stopped half way to their pedestal. “I have a crazy idea , on my go unleash all what you have on them.” He stepped forward and raised a force field around himself “NOW !” He shouted. The shields broke up and a massive wall of force waves hit the enemy team. While they were still confused Kail suddenly leaned forward. The gravity responded quickly to his magic and he began to “fall” towards the enemy pedestal. He landed right next to it and took the ball.

A strange feeling filled the tips of his hands. It suddenly became to disappear and Kail focused all his energy to keep this ball up, it was obvious now why he cannot use magic with that ball in his hands. His team that saw what happens began to run fearlessly forward, striking force waves all around. Emily who first got what happens stood up and prepared to send a force wave at him. Kail saw it and began running like crazy. She crossed her hands creating a force field and pushed them aside like a bird flapping her wings. A giant wave appeared right behind him. He ran as fast as he could and the wave was right behind him when suddenly it smashed into a shield, it was his team. Emily wasn’t ready to give up and rushed forward with her own gravity field. Those who were around kail quickly formed a shield around him but Emily didn’t seem to be interested in him, she went for their pedestal. Kail began to run towards their pedestal. The enemy team send waves at him, his team tried to cover him and hit Emily , the courtyard turned into a total chaos. He ran as fast as he could, Emily was already half the way through, he was almost there , just a few more meters. He jumped forward onto the pedestal and threw the ball on it, he fell to the ground, right on time to see Emily doing the same. Both teams froze in place to see what happens. Suddenly a bright white beam appeared from their team’s pedestal “We have a winner “ said master Corus when he was interrupted by a happy roar from Kail’s team, they won.

“Well played “ said Emily, smiling at Kail. He caught a sight of her beautiful eyes. He could see he managed to impress her. That evening everyone talked about the game. Even the loosing team had quite a high morale, as after all it was just a preparation for the true battle awaiting.

Chapter 8 – The Void Tournament
Spoiler:

The sun was setting outside of the Master’s mansion. The students set around the long tables in the main hall. On the white bright tablecloth stood big plates filled with delicious food. The students ate quickly, talkative as always. Such was the nature of the people of Alderon. Their warmness helped them to survive the nights below the skies in their tents as they wandered the plains in search for their home. It kept them together and gave them strength to overcome the challenges the Creator threw at them and become what they are today. Is that the land he promised them ? Or will the Garroks win this war and they’ll become nomads again ?

The white moon shined high in the sky at it’s full glory. Tomorrow the moon will be full and Kail will step into the big arena. The students discussed in excitement what awaits them there. Kail set quietly, listening. The training they had daily gave him a slight confidence which quickly faded away when he imagined the huge stadium and their enemies. “Hey Kail are you going to finish that chicken or can I have it ?” asked Allen “I’ll finish it” he answered, taking a big bite at it, maybe the food will distract him from thoughts. The students quickly swallowed every edible object on the table and went to sleep. The great tomorrow was falling upon them.

In the morning everyone woke up a bit earlier then usual, a bit more nervous then usual. Master Corus who went down earlier too was surprised to see the students already waiting for him in the courtyard. “Sit down” he said. “You were preparing for this moment for quite a while now. I believe in each one of you, you have great strength and together you can overcome any challenge you’ll be facing. Kail, would you kindly repeat the plan for everyone, just to be sure” . Kail stood up and went to the master. He looked down at the sitting students, looking at him with interest, waiting for him to speak, it was his plan after all. Kail felt a bit awkwardly, he unsurely opened his mouth and began to speak. “The idea is similar to what we did in the first game. We divide into two teams, each team will create a shield and begin to push towards the enemy pedestal. Allen and Ralf will stand to the sides of each team right besides the gap to blow away anyone who tries to cross it. Me and Emily will stand on the opposite sides of the shields and give the pace. Once we reach two thirds of the arena me and Emily will dash forward from both sides while you throw some blasts at the enemy. Emily grabs the ball … “ “wait shouldn’t you grab it ? You are quite agile while I can cover you with my spells” said Emily “I … I don’t know …” “C’mon Kail” “You’ll do fine” “yea we’ll beat their butts !” some students said from the crowd “Alright alright … I’ll do it. Once we … I … get the ball, the walls throw as many blasts as they can while we get back. Don’t let your guard down even after we pass the wall as they might break through”. “Lets win this game ! For our master !” , the crowd answered with a roar. They were ready to go.

The way to Noor-Aylard was filled with travellers going into the city. The students passed through the big city gates. Two huge Alderian banners hanged down from the city gates. They went on the ringed street to the great stadium. Many people stood in front of the main entrance. The students went to the side entrance of the stadium. The corridors led to a large hall somewhere below the stadium. It was crowded with people , students like them. They were all talking among themselves looking with hostility at the other teams. Everyone in this room wanted their hands on the ball, most of them will actually get their hands on the ball but not many of them will return it to their pedestal as victors. A large group of students approached them. They wore black tunics with white texture on it’s sides. A man with a long, straight , black beard stepped out, carefully looking at them “So you think you really stand a chance against my students with this pity looking crowd ? I expected more from you Corus, but not much … “ he said with a cold smile “I see you are still trying to grow a beard, Ksardus, maybe you will win by the time it grows up “ master Corus answered, smiling at him. They moved on. “He still can’t forgive me the time I put his beard on fire, totally accidently of course” said master Corus, still smiling. Kail could spot a familiar face in there, Darec the sewer rat, seems like his father managed to buy his way back into a bending school, it might explain why the Taurus bending school earned it’s reputation …

The students set quietly waiting for their turn. Teams went in and out, they could hear the crowd outside, cheering. Soon their turn came. They were put against Lighwind bending school. The students stepped into a small room with two doors, one led back to the hall, the other one – to the arena. “I trust every single one of you will give today it’s best, you can overcome any challenge if you really desire to” said master Corus. The team quickly formed two rows in front of the door. It opened and the students went out. The sun was shining outside lighting the stadium. Tens of thousands of people set on the tribunes, cheering and shouting. In the middle of the tribunes on a special platform set the Royal family. Somewhere in the crowd set many from his village, including his mother. Kail asked master Corus to give a ticket for his mother, he gave him for the whole village. Kail had no idea where did he get those tickets from, it is hard to get that many even if you have the money to afford them. They set there cheering. “Here comes our boy !” said elder Megar. His mother set quietly, so excited for him yet so worried, she felt too much to talk. As Kail went further into the arena he realised how big it is. It was one of those times he hoped to become an earth mage and burry himself underground, this unfortunately won’t happen. They went to the middle of the arena and stood there in a long line. In front of them stood the rival team. They were as exited as they were. Both teams went forward to shake hands. “Good luck” said the guy who shook Kail’s hand “You too” he answered. They seemed to be quite nice but unfortunately there is only one winner. The teams went back to their pedestals and the game had begun.

“Arrange rows” shouted Kail and two rows appeared on the sides of the arena. “Formation prepare, on my go. One , two , one two …” The rows advanced forward fast. The other team divided into three rows, two of which went forward to meet the incoming team. “One , two , one, two… “ Kail counted, carefully watching the other side for even the slightest sign of aggression. The other team began to prepare their force fields. The rows passed one third of the way already, it seemed like they wait for them to come closer. He closely watched their moves, suddenly they stepped forward and launched force waves. “STOP ! NOW !” said Kail and a huge shield appeared, absorbing the damage. The other team looked slightly confused and continued to launch their force fields. Their attacks were not coordinated just like it happened during the training. “On my go, one two , stop . One, two , stop “ said Kail. Suddenly four of their team dashed forward towards the gap in the lines “STOP, Ralf NOW !” he shouted. Ralf and Allen stepped out and quickly launched force fields. The four didn’t have a chance to evade and the wave hit them straight in their faces. Not only this but they were flying towards it at a huge speed. The wave threw them backwards, knocking them out. “Forward, one , two , one , two” The other team began to slowly walk backwards towards their pedestal, throwing back force waves. Kail saw they won’t be able to pass two thirds of the arena in time “All stop, dash NOW” he shouted.

The force shield quickly broke up and the student launched a big force waves forward. The other team who were used to throw the waves barely put their shields on time. Meanwhile Kail and Emily were already dashing towards the pedestal while the other team was repelling the force wave. The other team didn’t even have time to react and when they notice Kail he was already by the pedestal. He took the energy ball. Their team suddenly switched to offense, throwing as many force fields as they could. The other team tried to organize defence, the row closer to the pedestal began to throw force waves towards Kail but nothing could pass through Emily’s shield. They began to run as the wall charged forward. The team quickly switched to force balls so that they won’t hit Kail and Emily. The force balls were more powerful and accurate, perfect for one vs. one close combat. A few of their team quickly ran towards Kail and Emily to help with the shield. The other team couldn’t do anything now. A big, organized strike could have hit through Emily’s shield or make a gap in the closing wall but they were all busy combating the enemy in close one vs. one. They shielded formation quickly ran through the arena, the other team tried to chase them down but it was already too late. Kail ran to the pedestal and placed the energy ball on it. A large light beam appeared from the pedestal and the crowed roared with approval. They won the first round.

The team went down to the big hall “So far so good” noted Allen. “So how’s the team holding ?” “A few people got thrown on the ground, nothing major “ “yea just like training with Emily” they laughed. They obnoxiously waited for their next match. The crowd roared above them as a bloody battle between two other teams took place. They hit and blasted each other almost to pieces. One of the teams won but it was in such a bad shape they decided not to participate further. With no enemy to go up against Kail’s team automatically qualified for the next round. They watched closely the other battle taking place. It was the Taurus bending school who fought above them now. Kail somewhat hoped they loose but it didn’t happen. The other team barely made it through and now they were against the old champions. One bright side was to this story – they made it to the final round.

The team quickly assembled in two rows and prepared to go out. The light hit Kail’s eyes and blinded him for a second, then he saw the huge arena again. He slowly went towards the other team. The two teams stopped one in front of the other and closed to shake hands. Kail closed to the student in front of him. He had a cold dead expression on his face. They silently shook hands, Kail could feel his disgust , he felt the same. “have a look at this sweetie” one of them said, laughing in a somewhat mocking way. It was Darec who was standing in front of Emily. She closed her mouth tightly and tried to ignore the comment. The teams silently turned around and went to their pedestals.

“Alright two lines quickly” said Kail. The lines assembled on both sides as before. “On my go, one, two , one , two” he counted and the lines began moving. The other team assembled in a triangle. “One, two , one , two” said Kail, closely watching for any hostility from the enemy team. The enemy team quickly created force balls and sent at the lines. “STOP STOP !” shouted Kail. The lines deployed the shields. The balls hit it simultaneously, Kail could feel all the weight of the strike. “One, two, stop” he shouted. Another strike hit the shields. They moved slowly towards the other pedestal. The Taurus team landed coordinated strikes trying to break the shield. The lines closed slowly towards the middle. The other team went forward too. They stroke at the lines again and again and their triangular formation threatened to cut them by half. The lines reached the middle. Kail saw they won’t make it to the mark again. “On my go strike , three, two , one, NOW !” he said. The shields broke up and a coordinated force wave went right at the triangle. They Taurus team quickly pulled their own shields. The wave was cut by the triangle with barely any effect. “We must do something now” thought Kail. “Close the gap between the lines “ he shouted and both lines connected together to one .

Emily ran quickly towards Kail “I have a crazy idea, remember the gravity fields the master taught us ? Launch me up, quick.” “You are crazy! You want us to launch you in the air ?!” “No, I want you to launch me directly at them” . Kail looked at her as if she was mad, another strike just hit the line. “we don’t have time, just do it. Once I land attack the triangle all together and you Kail grab the ball” she said. He and a few others surrounded her and created a force field. It slowly covered her whole bodey and she began floating in the air. “Do it , now !” she shouted, they raised their hand up and launched her forward. She quickly created a force field and landed right in the middle of the triangle like a meteorite, shattering it around her. Without giving them time to recover the whole team began to attack. Kail dashed around the broken triangle towards the pedestal. Soon force waves began flying towards him. He moved as quickly as he could towards the pedestal. He landed right near it and grabbed the ball. The triumph wasn’t long as he was quickly hit by force waves. He dodged them as best as he could. He saw another force wave closing but it was too late to dodge it. He fell to the ground, dropping the ball which quickly disappeared. His body hurt but he tried to stand back up as soon as possible, he should get out of there , fast. He stood up and prepared to run but suddenly he felt something closing , he dodged left as a powerful lighting bolt passed right where he stood. He tried to stand up again but he saw another lighting closing on him. “That’s it, this is the end” the thought. Suddenly the lightning changed course and hit the ground. He looked in front of him, it was Emily. More lightning began to fly towards them “Kail quickly get out of there!”. He dashed as quickly as he could back to the line, he flew right at it. The line split quickly to let him pass. He crashed into the floor and the line closed behind him, right on time to repel another strike.

“This is not good” said Kail. “C’mon we can still cut through them” said Emily. “They throw lightnings, freaking lightnings ! “. A lightning barrage stroke at the line. Kail could feel the hit and power from those lightning, they weren’t those small sparks master Corus was teaching them with. Yet he could feel something different in them. They weren’t even, their power was, inconsistent. “Do you feel that? “ he asked Emily “The lightning bolts? “ “yea , they are not even, something is wrong with them” “I dunno what you’re talking about, I can’t feel anything.” “I think they know how to create lightning but not how to control it. Do you think we can redirect them like we did during lessons? “ “Worth a try”. “Alright on my go catch the lightning and send it back. Ready ? Three , two , one, NOW !” . The shields broke once more and the students caught the lightning bolts, throwing them back at the enemy. The other team was quite surprised and barely had time to pull shields but those shields couldn’t save them from the lightning. The bolts hit the shields and pushed them back, exhausted . “Keep striking!” he shouted. The team began throwing force balls as fast as they could .”That’s our chance” he said and dashed towards the pedestal. Emily also dashed forward, right into the enemy. She landed a big shock wave at them and passed through towards the pedestal, catching up with Kail. “Kail grab the ball and I will launch you up” “You WHAT ?!” he shouted grabbing the ball but she didn’t answer, She created a force field around Kail. He felt as if he was in water, floating . She pushed her hands and sent him up. Kail looked down as he flew above the enemy team. Not only he is now flying 8 meter above the ground without any ability to cast spells the other team is also throwing lightnings at him. He began to decent right on the line. His teammates abandoned the attack, preparing to catch him. He prayed they will actually catch him or he will smash right into the floor. He closed his eyes preparing for impact when suddenly his body stopped and began floating again. Suddenly his body gained weight and he fell to the ground. He began to run towards the pedestal. The enemy team was already on their feet. The threw force balls at the unorganized wall and crashed it. They arena turned into a bloody brawl. 4 people ran around Kail with force shields. Soon force waves began to fly from everywhere. The enemy team dashed forward towards their pedestal . The stood all around the arena constantly throwing force balls and lightning bolts at Kail. The team was exhausted and slowly began to break down. The strikes at the shield broke down the shield holders one by one. Soon Kail was running alone. He saw to his right how the enemy runner passed by with their ball. He knew he MUST get there first at all costs. Someone dashed to his side, it was Emily. She stopped letting Kail to pass and prepared to repel the attackers . 3 Dashers went towards her fast, she pulled her hands aside and created her signature force wave, knocking them down. The force waves began to fly towards her. She dodged them one by one and sent force balls back, striking down the chasers one by one. Kail ran as fast as he could. Lightnig bolts were passing above his head, he saw the pedestal, it was so close. Suddenly a lightning hit his back. He shouted in pain and fell to the ground. He knew he had to stand back up. He stood up with the last of his powers and jumped towards the pedestal, throwing the ball right into it. He crashed on the floor and turned around. Everything became silent. The tribunes waited in tension to see who won, everything froze. A tinny beam of light appeared in Kail’s pedestal and suddenly it grew up and lighted the whole stadium. The tribunes roared and cheered, they saw the new champions.

This evening they had the great honor of lighting the pedestals one last time for the celebration of the last day of the Ethanimus. Kail and Emily were given a torch to light the pedestal as they were the true stars of the game. Kail stood there proud more than ever. He imagined his father sitting there among the crowd, how proud he would be if he just could sit there. His mother sure was, so does the whole village who came to see the game. For the first time he had time to look at the pedestals. They were made out of old, gray, almost black stone. It was covered with reliefs and 4 dragons set on each if it’s sides , holding the energy ball above a large bowl where he was about to lit fire. It wasn’t an ordinary fire. It had a white color and gave out almost no heat. He looked at the pedestal one last time and went back down to the big hall below the arena. Only now he began to feel the pain in his back. They went through the main corridor towards the exit. On their right stood the Taurus team. Master Corus kindly smiled towards Ksardus who didn’t hide his anger. The teams passed by looking at each other when suddenly Emily stepped out of the line and pinned one of their students to the wall. “NEVER call me sweetie again” she said and threw Darec to the ground. “Someone will need a new pair of pants now “ noted Allen, looking at Darec with satisfaction.

Chapter 9 – Fort Firefly
Spoiler:

They days slowly passed in the Master’s mansion. The hard work in the courtyard began to slowly yell results. Kail felt much confident in his magic and knew the basics well but something still bothered him. He knew how to execute moves correctly but he didn’t understand the concepts behind them, why should he do something this way and not the other way around … One morning another gap appeared in the lines, this time in front of Kail. “I give up you know … my back still hurts from yesterday” said Allen and stepped aside. Master Corus solved this problem by pairing Kail and Emily together.

“ I want to see you executing this perfectly. You cannot move forward until you prefect the basics.” . Kail went to starting stance and prepared to strike forward at Emily. He carefully pointed the force ball at her and sent it forward. She quickly caught it and sent back at Kail. He caught the charge and sent back at her. The ball flew between them both rapidly. Kail focused on the ball which was gaining more and more speed and didn’t notice the Master who stood right behind him. “You two already know this move quite well, why won’t you help me and work with the others ? “ They both nodded and went after him. “Eve your hands are too close to your body, let them move freely. Kail practice with her a bit” .

Kail entered into starting stance waiting for Eve’s ball. She sent a force ball at him, he easily caught the ball and sent it slowly back towards her. She caught the ball and sent it back at him.” You need to relax your muscles yet remain focused.” “Like this ? Here ball, now I need relax right ? like relax the body or relax relax ? “ at this point the ball hit her body and pushed her back slightly. Kail was amazed she managed to put a whole sentence during that time. “No I said you should FOCUS on the ball. You use your mind to do magic and not your muscles, you should keep them relaxed.” “oh I see, here bally bally , now forward right ? And now relax and focus because I do magic with my mind right ? I focus on it and then I push it at you and then …” she was hit by the ball again. “The idea is to catch the ball and not to chat here all day … just focus on the ball alright ?”. He sent another ball, she caught it and sent back. “It’s not that complicated right ?”. She nodded and sent the ball back. “You’re doing well” “Really ? I mean that’s really kind of …” “The ball” “Ah yea right” “We’ll talk once you get the hang of this move”. They kept tossing the ball around. Kail threw it back slowly and she caught it and sent back. With every throw the balls became more powerful and faster. Eve focused on the ball and preformed the move correctly. “Very nice Eve” “Really? So we can talk now ?” “Alright as long as you focus on the ball”. She nodded and threw the ball back. “Your father is a Legionary right? “ “Yes, he is a formation commander in a diversionary cohort” “Those guys who drop behind the ghost wall ? You haven’t see him in a long time , isn’t ? You miss him?” “Yes, I miss him …” Kail was surprised how serious suddenly she became. Deep, thoughtful, it seemed like she could feel exactly what he feels.

In the following morning Kail woke up earlier than usual. He went out into the courtyard. The dawn slowly made it’s way through the sky, warming the cold, fresh night air. Kail went to the lake and set down. He looked down at his figure in the water and the clear sky above him. He took a small rock and threw into the lack. He watched as his figure disappeared in the waves and reappeared again with the master behind him . He jumped slightly from surprise “Good morning Kail” “Good morning master” “Woke up earlier today ? I have a special task for you today.” Kail stood up in front of him “What task ?” I want you to bring something special for me. An ancient relic of the past, lying deep within the ruins of old. “ “Where is it ?” “Oh I don’t know Kail, but I know who might know. Go to Fort Firefly and give them this.” He gave Kail a sealed scroll “And don’t go alone, take your friends with you”.

Kail went to the students’ wing. Allen was lying on the bed, staring at the ceiling and thinking of something. “Hey wake up, the master Gave us some work to do” “What work ?” “He asked me to bring something from some old ruins. He told me to give this to the guards at Fort Firefly.” “What is it exactly we’re searching for ?” “I dunno he didn’t say” “Dude do you even know how it looks like ?! “ “Nop, lets ask the master”. They went to the master’s mansion, then to the backyard and back to the courtyard. The master was nowhere to be found. “Great so now we don’t even know what we’re looking for …” said Allen “We’ll figure it out on our way”. “Can I join you ?” asked Eve “And me too !” said Ralf. “I guess it won’t hurt to have a few extra hands …” “So what’s the plan?” “The master gave me this letter, we should probably go to the fort and give them it.”

The stone road leading to the Fort began to climb up the mountain. Kail slowly went up. The road curved up like a snake, the scenery began to change from trees, leaves and bushes to rocks. There were still a few trees growing up on the sloped ground but not enough to obscure the sight from it. The whole valley could be seen, from the small villages in the thick Forest to the capital to the North. Its big shiny Crystal Tower was visible from almost anywhere in the region if not obscured by the trees. Soon the Fort itself became visible. It was a big and tall structure. The thick outer walls which surrounded the Fort had six big towers pointing into the skies. The large gate was closed and Alderian banners were waving in the wind on it. Behind it the main citadel was visible. It was even higher than the outer towers, separating into smaller towers as it went up. Two guards stood near the gates. One of the guards noticed them approaching and said “You better go back to where you came from, this is not a place for kids.” “We have this letter for you.” said Kail, giving the sealed scroll to the guard. The guard opened it and read carefully, then scrolled it back and gave to Kail. “You better show it to Intuor Odelii, follow me.”

The gate was opened and they followed him into the courtyard. They entered the main citadel. They passed a big hall and went to a spiral staircase. They passed a few levels and entered a small corridor. The guard lead them to one of the doors and stopped near it. “Go in” he said. They entered what seemed to be a small office. To their left was a cupboard full of scrolls and to their right was a big map of the Fort. In front of them set a man in his fifty’s . His table was covered in scrolls with an Intuor helmet popping out of the paper. “Yes what is it ?” he said. Kail went forward and gave him the letter. He read it closely and said “I don’t think they should have let you in but ... oh well … follow me.” . They went back to the staircase. Intuor Odelii went lower a few levels and then entered a large corridor with a big door and a lot of guards in the middle. “Open the gate” he said as they passed through the corridor. It lead to a large hall with holding cells. “We house here some of the worst criminal scum. Murderers, slavers, there are also different thieves and such.” They went down another staircase past a few guards and into another long hall. The Intuor called a guard formation towards him and they went to one of the holding cells. “Open the door” he said and one of the guards began to unlock the steel door. “Beware of this one. She might look weak but hell, she drove some prisoners crazy out there and almost forced one of my guards to open the door. We don’t keep any keys on this level anymore… Watch yourselves and if something goes wrong give us a shout. Guards lock the hall, don’t let anyone out until this door is sealed.” The guards opened the door and Kail entered the cell. They closed the door behind him.

In front of him set a young girl of his age. He recognized her, she was with those bandits they caught. She was sitting on her bad, playing with a piece of wood. She moved it between her fingers rapidly. She gave a quick glance at them and said “What do you want ?” , still toying around with that piece of wood. Kail didn’t know what to ask. He didn’t even know what is he searching for. “You do not look like the locals , do you ? Where are you from ?”. “She gave another glance at him and answered “From beyond the portal” “It’s quite far away, what brought you here ?” “Why should I tell you ?” “You followed your master here isn’t ?” said Allen “What did she do here ?” “I won’t talk, don’t even bother” “Did you like her ?” said Kail. She furiously stood up “Of course I loved her until you murdered her !” “And what’s about the villagers you tried to murder ? Do you think this is right ?”. She stared right at Kail, he could see the hatred in her eyes “You’ll never understand ! We did what we had to in order to survive and save us all !” “You were bandits , you robbed people for profit !” “You and your selfish people will never understand ! We took what we needed for our journey to save our home and you took it all, YOU MURDERED HER !” she was ready to attack Kail but Ralf quickly caught her . The others quickly pointed their magic at her. “How would that save your home ?” asked Kail. “Master Merile said the shard will protect our home from the invaders , such as you.” “That might be it !” whispered Allen. “Where is this shard ?” “I won’t tell you, and even if I would you won’t be able to get it” “Your people, do you have family home ?” she looked at him coldly ‘My father was killed protecting our village, my mother was murdered in front of me. The invaders killed them all, me and my little brother survived” “That’s a horrible thing …” she jumped up again “How dare you say it ! Who are you to pity me ! After all you’ve done to us !” “I don’t want any harm to you. How did they look like ? The invaders ?” “Their red capes, the steel boots on the ground, covered in blood.” “Do they look to you like us ?” “You are the same, you murdered our master !” “Don’t you want to see your brother ?” , she didn’t answer. “Let’s make a deal, you show us where the shard is and we will let you free.”. There was a long silence in the cell. “Fine, I’ll show you the shard, you won’t get it anyway.” They left the cell. “Are you alright ?” asked Intuor Odelii “We might need your help once more”.

“No no no NO ! I’m not letting her go out like that ! She is dangerous and should be in a cell” he answered to Kail. “And if I prove she is not a dangerous criminal ?” “You already lost this bet, she sits there for a reason.”. Kail pointed with his finger at a key ring on the wall, so that the Ituor won’t notice. “Is there anything we can do to help her?” he walked slightly to the right to draw his attention away from the keys while Allen sneaked to take them. “No, you cannot. People sit in Fort Firefly for a reason. She is no exception. I can’t release her just like that even if I wanted to. You should leave now, this is not a place for you.”. They generously thanked the Intuor and left his office. “So what do we do now ?” “Now ? Let’s do a jailbreak”

“Out of all things you ever did this is the craziest one” said Allen, barely holding the force field together with Ralf and Eve. Below them ,thirty meters above the ground, Kail was hanging mid air. He was slightly floating near a window, looking inside. “She’s not there”. The force field slowly moved to the right. Kail was pushing himself towards the next window and the force field. He looked inside and nodded his head. He took out the key ring and hit the window bars with it. The girl came to the window. “Use this key ring to open the cell door. Go to the spiral staircase and go up to the top of the tower, we’ll meet you there.”

She nodded with her head and took the key ring. She began trying the keys one by one. Finally she found the one she needed and opened the cell door. She looked out carefully, The door in the end of the corridor was closed with a few guards standing near it. She carefully closed to the door. The guards looked at the staircase on the other side of the corridor. She created a green beam and sent it towards them. They slowly fell asleep as she began trying the keys on the door. Finally she found the correct key and opened the door. She ran towards the staircase and began climbing up. She reached the top floor and ran into a corridor. Right in front of her stood four guards. Without time to do anything she jumped up above them, stood up and continued running. The surprised guards quickly divided into two groups, the first ran after her while the second ran down the staircase.

Kail was waiting near the exit when suddenly he heard a loud bell ringing. A second later someone jumped right out of the door leading to the roof, it was her. “Quick lock the door” said Kail and they put a log on it right on time to hear the guards hitting it. “So what’s now?” she said. Kail created a force field around him and jumped down from the tower. He stopped the falling, landing on the lower tower. “Allen jump down” “You are crazy aren’t you ?” he said, jumping down. Kail created a force field and stopped his fall. “Now help me out with it” he said. The girl jumped down next, landing right into Kail’s force field. “I’m not jumping” said Ralf “C’mon we’ll catch you “ “No way I jump this one” “What happened Ralf? You are fearless in combat, where is our fearless Ralf ? “ “I’m not jumping, I never EVER was that high above the ground, I DON’T WANT TO JUMP” . The guards behind the door began to strike at it with something heavy, the door cracked and began to crumble. “There is always first time” said Eve pushing him off with a force wave, jumping right after him. “Alright one tower done, lets keep going.” He said. He jumped off to the next tower. The guards just breached the door above “They are jumping off the towers ! Go to the towers !” They shouted. Allen followed Kail down, after that the girl, Ralf and Eve. They jumped off the tower onto an outer tower. They jumped off it and landed on the steep ground. “Now run !” said Kail. Back on the man tower Intuor Odelii was standing “Sir the prisoner has escaped, they got some help from outside. We are ready to chase them.” “Hold your forces Tueor. They wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t important. I really hope this kid knows what he’s doing…”

Chapter 10 – A Shard of a Past
Spoiler:

The sun slowly went down above the forest as Kail ran through it. “I think we did it …” said Kail, breathing heavily. “You know we are probably the most wanted criminals in the area !” said Allen “Does it even worth it ?” “I guess the master gave us this task for a reason. It must be important.”. Their breath slowly became normal again. Kail looked at the girl “What is your name ?” “Oriana” she answered. “Alright, lead the way”.

They went through the thick trees and bushes until they reached a stone road. “Are you sure it’s a good idea to take the road considering … the latest events ?” asked Allen. “We need to get some food before it gets dark, I guess there is a settlement in the end of this road.”. They kept going forward. Kail could see now smoke going up in front of them “It must be a settlement. It’s better if she won’t enter the settlement though. Me and Ralf can set up a camp and get some wood for fire, you and eve can get some food” said Allen. Kail went forward into the settlement. It was a small village, similar to his. They went to a stand at the main square. “Welcome travellers, can I interest you in some food ? “ asked an old woman by the stand. “Yes please” said Kail. “We’ll need a bit of beef, carrots, lettuce, garlic and some bread.” Said Eve. They bough all what she said and went back. “Do you know how to cook all those ?” asked Kail “Sure, we gonna have a great meal” she smiled. “Now where are the rest ?”. Suddenly they heard a branch breaking behind them. Kail quickly cast a force wave. “Ooouch watch it !” said Allen, dropping down a stack of branches.

They went back to the camp and set up a fire. Eve began cooking the food while the rest could rest for a while. “So where exactly is that shard? “ asked Allen. “In some sort of old ruins , west to here. The whole place is covered in old runes. The master said the answer lies in them but she couldn’t translate them. We were searching for someone who could help us translating it …” “By robbing people on the road, yea we know that part”. She gave a cold look at Allen and turned around. “What would you do if you were on my place ?” “I don’t know, but I won’t rob people for that.” Said Kail, “There are other ways to ask for help” “We don’t need your help or you to come and tell us what to do. I’m here just to do my part of the deal, no more, no less. You already did enough.” “And you really believe what you did was right ?” “I was always taught to survive at all costs. After I lost my parents I was left alone to take care of myself and my brother. You will never know how is it to survive in this world …” “Alright enough of this depressing talk, the food is ready” said Eve. The food was eaten quietly and everyone went to sleep. Kail took a place by the fire where he saw the whole camp. He noticed Oriana, she was sitting aside, carefully watching them. He felt somehow uncomfortable to sleep. “I will watch the camp first, in case the guards catch up or the fire goes out” he said. “Alright wake us up when it’s our turn.” Said Allen. He set down in front of the fire. The night passed slowly, finally he got tired, woke up Allen and went to sleep.

The following morning the camp was folded and they began going. “Can you believe we could spend this night in our warm homes instead of spending the day off in the freezing cold ? …” “Quit whining Allen, we’re almost there” said Kail. They kept going into the forest. Oriana led them forward with confidence, it felt like she was familiar with the forest. She crouched near one of the stones. “Here it is” she said. “Where ? I can’t see anything !” said Allen. “there” she pointed. Right behind the bush there was some a dent in the ground. In the middle of it was a stone structure, resembling a gate. They closed to the structure and looked inside. They could see a long stone corridor inside. “It leads further underground, we’ll need torches.” Said Allen. Oriana pointed at a crate near the entrance “Torches, great !” said Allen . They took the torches and went in. The stone corridor led down to a big hall. Oriana dropped her torch in a gap in the wall and suddenly the fire spread through the walls, lighting the whole hall. It was a giant, old structure. The walls were covered on old runes and glyphs , the columns were covered in ornaments. “Oil dent , smart “ said Allen. One glyph caught Kail’s eye. It was a big void dragon, right above another door. They closed to the door and tried to open it. “It won’t help, the door is locked” said Oriana. “So what should we do now ?” “She said the answer is in the glyphs, lets see if what we can get from them”. Kail went to the entrance and began to look at the glyphs one by one. The first glyph showed a man in a torn tunic with a sceptre in his hand, the next glyph showed the same man praying at a pedestal. “Maybe we should pray ?” said Eve “No look, this is Patriarch Aladarn “ said Allen, pointing at another glyph with the same man, speaking to a dragon. “It tells the story of void magic.” .
The next glyph showed him doing magic as the dragons watched him. “The glyphs continue on the other wall” . After that there was a picture of the man near a pedestal “that’s his trial, look” Allen pointed at another picture of the man with a ball of energy in his hands. “Yes but what it has to do with the gate ?” asked Eve. “Look at those glyphs.” He pointed at the last two glyphs by the door. Each one of them showed a man with an energy ball in his hands, casting the energy forward “Towards the door, they want us to do void magic on the door !” said Kail. “but what exactly ?” . They closed to the door. It had two gaps in it. “I don’t know” said Kail. He stepped back to have a look at the glyphs again. “I don’t think they are doing some moves, I think they send forward pure energy.” “So were do we find pure energy?” Kail looked back at the glyphs on the wall. Suddenly he jumped up “The dragons, they gave the pure energy right ?” “yea but we don’t have any…” “Look at that dragon glyph” he pointed at the big dragon above the door. “ Look at his eyes”. Instead of eyes the dragon had two crystals. Kail entered a starting stance and tried to let the energy in them out. Slowly a white beam appeared and closed towards Kail’s hands. They formed into two energy balls. Kail could feel the power inside them. He couldn’t cast any magic and could barely sustain the balls. He closed to the door and sent his arms forward. Slowly the energy went from his hands towards the gaps in the door. Suddenly the ornaments on it began to glow in white and the door slowly opened. “You did it Kail !” said Eve.

They stepped in. The door lead to another hall. The side walls of it lead to long corridors. The walls in those corridors were filled with stone shelves with large stone boxes. “It’s a catacomb”. In the middle of the hall was a pedestal. On that pedestal rested a crystal. “This is the shard” said Allen. Suddenly Oriana jumped forward towards the shard. “Stop !” shouted Kail. Oriana turned around and pointed her magic towards him “Don’t move. “ she said. “My parents, my Master, they all died to give me the opportunity to save our people from the invaders , you won’t stop me !” . Suddenly the air behind the pedestal began to distort and a figure suddenly appeared. Oriana turned back to see what’s going on and was surprised to see again her teacher. “Master … you are alive !” “Yes I’m alive and I came to finish the work of my life.” Kail looked at her with disgust. She had a dark miserable hair, covering her old deformed face. Her left hand was burnt from her last encounter, so was probably her body below the torn cloth. Her old hands resembled that of a predator with her long sharp nails. “Who could even guess that a small boy could alone figure out how to open that gate. Too long I searched for a way to gain power. Now I have the ultimate artefact to grant it to me. With it I can claim anything I want, I can become empress, no I CAN RULE THE WORLD !” Oriana looked at her teacher “b…what do you mean ? I don’t understand …” “Oh my poor girl , so naïve. You served me well and for this I will let you live. As for you four your usefulness to me has expired.” She stepped forward and picket the shard . Oriana was frozen in her place. She looked powerlessly as her master created a green beam in her hand. Kail and the others went to starting stance and prepared to fight. She was ready to send her green beam when suddenly she was hit by another beam, Oriana’s. She quickly recovered from the hit “You treacherous … I taught you all you know ! I will …” she didn’t have time to speak as she was jumped by someone from her back. It was a human sized pile of bones, or skeletons to be exact. Suddenly the tombs around them began to open. Skeletons began to rise from them. Some wore cloth and armor, some wielded swords and axes. Their eyes were glowing with a blue light and their cold breath could be felt even from the distance “We got to run !” shouted Kail. They turned back but the gate was now close. “What should we do ?” they looked around “Just run !” said Allen and they began to run towards the left corridor. Oriana who still didn’t recover from the meeting was jumped by a skeleton and fell to the ground.” Wait we can’t leave her.” They hit the skeleton with a force wave and picket her up. “Cmon let’s go!”.

They ran deeper into the catacombs. “Wait shouldn’t we get the shard ?” asked Allen. “Forget it it’s not worth it, keep running.” “I’m not sure leaving it to a crazy witch is a good idea …” said Allen. The catacombs around them slowly began to return to life. Skeletons were popping out of the tombs. They pushed and hit the skeletons with their magic. The corridor turned right then right again. Suddenly a big group of skeletons appeared in front of them “We can’t go there” “Wait this is the hall we came from !” “Go back !” “Go where ?! It’s a loop ! “ said Allen. They backed from the skeletons. Kail looked at the walls in hope to find any way to escape. “There ! There is a ledge above us !” Kail created a force field and dashed up. He created a force field and helped Eve to get up. Oriana began to climb up fast. Soon she reached the ledge and climbed up on it. Eve helped Allen to get up and Kail pulled up Ralf. The floor below them was filled with skeletons who almost reached them with their swords and axes. “Keep going and don’t fall” said Allen. They kept going along the ledge until they reached the main chamber again. The stone was old and cracked under their legs. “keep going” they kept going along the ledge to another corridor in the front part of the chamber. They walked on the ledge slowly. The corridor turned right and right again. “Stop ! It’s another loop !” said Allen. Kail looked at the walls again. They were covered in glyphs and ornaments. Above them was a gap in the wall with a white crystal in the middle. In front of it was a round hole, blocked by rubble. Kail created another force field and slowly floated to the other side. He climbed slightly and began to clean out the rubble. He cleaned out one of the big rocks and a light beam passed through the hole and hit the white crystal. Suddenly the wall below the opened and a secret passage appeared. ”that’s our ticket out !” said Kail “To jump down to those skeletons ? It’s a suicide ! You need to be a total freak to …” Oriana jumped off the ledge and ran straight through the pass. Kail jumped down and followed her. “You’re all crazy !” shouted Allen “Guess I’m too” and jumped down.

The secret passage lead to another hall, slightly smaller than the main chamber. The light beam went trough the room to another crystal on the ceiling, then down into the floor. “This room has no exits “ said Allen “they close on us !” said Eve as the skeletons began to enter the passage. “Hold them off I’ll think of something” said Kail. Allen looked around the room. “Look ! There is another crystal on the other side ! We need to redirect the light to it” “But how ? It’s high above the ground !” “I’ll do it” said Oriana and began to climb up. “Hurry we can’t hold them off much longer” said Eve, Oriana climbed on the column and jumped towards the hanging crystal but her jump was too low. She missed the crystal and began to fall down. Kail quickly created a force field right on time to catch her. He raised the field and she began to float up. She jumped up and caught the crystal . She caught a ceiling ornament with her legs and began to direct the crystal. The light beam slowly went across the room until it reached the crystal on the other side. Another door in the side of the room opened. “Wait, I think I know how we triggered all those walking bones. Remember when that witch took the shard ? It had a light beam below it…You know what this means ?” “no …” Allen looked terrifically at the wall behind them. The tombs began to open one by one and skeletons began to pop out of them. This wave passed through the wall until it reached a large tomb on the floor. The lead opened and a Skeleton in a ark robe with a sceptre flew out of it. “Run !” shouted Allen. The skeleton pointed his sceptre at them and shot a white beam from it. The beam missed and hit a column behind them, destroying it,

They began to run to the next hall. Over there was another hall. Above the floor was a door. “It might be the exit let’s climb up. Kail dashed up and prepared to help the others as suddenly a green beam passed above his head. “You think you get away ?” said the witch. Kail wanted to hit her with a force ball but suddenly she was gone. He heard a stone cracking, he turned around and saw her shooting another beam at him. He jumped to the side but the beam followed him when suddenly stopped. Oriana tried to push it back to her Master. Kail cast a force wave at her and push her to the side. She stood up “I will fry you with this shard”. She took the shard and lifted it up. A white beam suddenly appeared and hit the wall right behind her. It was the skeleton in the robe. She turned around and stepped back. She created a green glow around her and disappeared but the skeleton cast another beam and hit her, pinning her to the wall. “Ghhaaaahh, m … my body, how did it see me !” “It doesn’t see with eyes, it senses your life, your energy” answered Kail. He didn’t even know he knew it. The skeleton pointed his sceptre at her, charged it up and cast another beam. The beam hit her and the whole room was lit by the light. A second later it was all over. Kail looked at where the witch was. The only thing he could see is gray ash and the shard on the floor. He ran towards it and picked it up. The skeleton now turned his attention towards him, shooting another beam. Oriana was already half the way up to the door while Allen and Ralf were pushing Eve up with a force field. The Skeleton turned around and prepared to hit them. Kail ran forward and put a shield up. The beam hit the shield. Kail felt how his powers quickly drain. He felt exhausted, barely could stand on his legs. He ran towards the Skeleton and cast a force wave at it, knocking it down to the floor. Eve and Ralf were pulling Allen up. Kail went towards them and began to pull up Ralf. Allen reached the door and began to help to pull up. With his last powers he tried to dash up but his legs failed him. He fell to the ground, unable to move. The others quickly began to pull him up as the skeleton began to rise up. He shot a beam at Kail but Allen quickly pushed him to the side. “They are coming through the door !” shouted Oriana as skeletons began to appear from the other side of the door. “Pull him !” they finally pulled him up to the door. The skeleton was ready to cast his spell when suddenly he stopped, and collapsed. The skeletons on the other side of the door collapsed too. Allen was breathing heavily “We did it … we got it …” he said. “Now let’s get out of here before they change their mind. Can you walk Kail ?” “Yes, I think so” he said. He slowly stood up and they began to walk out. The corridor led to another door. They opened it. It led to a cave. They passed through the cave until they were hit by a bright light, they were out.

They all set down near a tree “So what ‘s now ?” “I guess we should return this to the master. And you , Oriana ?” “I … I need time to think … about what … happened. I should return back to my people I guess, where I belong to. This artefact, it wouldn’t stop the invaders, isn’t it ?” “Judging by what I’ve seen here it would rather vaporize them together with a good half of this world … “ answered Allen. “Here take this, it will help you get food and maybe place to sleep” said Kail, giving her a golden coin. “Then I will go, maybe we will meet again.” She quickly disappeared in the forest. “lets go back to the master”.

They returned to the mansion by dusk. The master was waiting for them “Here Master, this is the shard. That witch you killed with the bandits ? It wasn’t dead, we met her in the ruins. She tried to use the shard for …” “Yet she couldn’t, isn’t ?” “How … she … couldn’t ? “ “Follow me Kail”. They went to the backyard. The master set down on the platform near the lake “Sit down. She couldn’t use this shard because it was never intended for her. Let me tell you a story Kail. A long time ago there were 6 men, 6 brothers. The first was proud and arrogant, His name was Neferan. The second was stubborn and diligent, his name was Odelarn. The third was calm yet warm in his heart. His name was Helian. The fourth was eloquent , light on his feet and his heart. His name was Lumian. The fifth was cold yet wise, his name was Ksaderan, and the sixth was perceptive and saw what others couldn’t, his name was …” “Aladarn.” “Correct. The six brothers were talented, each one in their own way. The first found comfort in fire magic, the second defeated the stone, the third mastered the water, the fourth understood air.” “And the other two ?” “They studied the void. Aladarn learned about it’s power and dangers and learned to use it in harmony with the nature, but Ksaderan became power hungry and learned how to use it all, with little care to balance or life. He learned how to use the souls of others and found a use to the tainted energy. Remember what I taught you about your soul ? Your energy pool. He had the same energy pool, but instead of taking as much of the pure energy as possible, he took the tainted. One day all six brothers met together. They showed each other their powers. They were impressed with what they could do and Ksaderan suggested to use their power. ‘We were given great powers, so great we can move mountains, shape rivers and oceans. Lets use our powers to create life and be like the creator’. Together they enchanted a crystal with all their six powers and tried to give it life and power. The creator saw them that day. He was angered by the brothers who tried to become like him and punished them. He shattered the crystal into 6 parts and said ‘as those shards that broke from the crystal you will not be together again. You will be in your shard until I will gather you together’. The brothers were ashamed by what they did, and so they blamed Ksaderan and exiled him, he was never seen again. Aladarn who didn’t agree with the four decided to leave. The four brothers went to their way and settled down where their hearts desired. Aladarn became a nomad in those lands and so we were for hundreds of years, each brother alone, each one with his shard.” “So this is Aladarn’s shard ?” “Yes, this is the void shard.” “So you want to protect it from others who want to abuse it ?” “No. The shard is living. It thinks and can speak if you listen to it. It chooses it’s own master to carry it and reveals it’s secrets only to him. It chose you Kail” “Me ? How ? I … I haven’t done anything , I couldn’t even …” “You found it, against all odds you managed to do what many before you couldn’t. You didn’t know what or where is what you’re searching for , but somewhere deep it called you and you found it. Now listen to my words and remember them well:

On that day, when the moons stand in line,
A great hero will rise and shine.
As opposed to him will stand,
The great evil of the forbidden land.

Find them all, the shards of light,
That will show you in the night,
The way, to the one you seek,
Hidden past the one who’s meek.

He will know the ways, all five,
The elements on which we thrive.
He’ll unite the tribes together
Against the horror of the nether.

Know those words, in them you’ll find
The salvation, of our kind.”

“But how can he know all those magical elements ?" "As I once told you the elements are a division we forced upon ourselves. Magic is something universal that we could all use if we weren’t bounded by our mind and since of the past.” “So we cannot do other magic because the creator separated us , he didn’t want us to become gods.” “Gods we won’t become, even if we master magic. Know those words as they will be, the trial you will get to see.”

Kail didn’t sleep well during the night. He muttered something to himself, over and over again. “… Know those words, in them you’ll find, the salvation, of our kind. The salvation … of our kind.”. He could be preparing for tomorrow all his life. And so with dawn his Trial will begin.

Chapter 11 - The Journey Begins
Spoiler:

The rays of the rising sun warmed the ground after the cold night. A quiet pray could be heard in the distance. The villagers silently watched as Elder Megar read the blessing. His hand rested on the head of Kail who was crouching in front of him. He spoke slowly as to delay the moment when he will need to release him to his way. His mother stood in the crowd, watching silently. Small tear drops could be seen on her face. She didn’t know if she was crying from sorrow or joy. Finally Kail stood up. He looked at the village, he knew he won’t see it soon. Elder Megar closed to him and picked up something from his belt. “Here, take this dagger. It will serve you well in peace ad war.” He gave him a curved Nepheline dagger. It had a dark gray color with white carvings on it. He took the dagger and put in his belt. Looked at the crowd, game a shy smile, grabbed his bag and went towards the village gate. His friends won’t join him on his trial. Just like he was given a purpose so did they, and so they part.

He began to walk trough through the forest which became so familiar to him during his life here. The road led around lake Romare straight to the west. He walked silently looking around. He began to think about how he would live. He has a big food supply which will sustain him for a few days, maybe even a week. He has four golden coins in his pocket, a sleeping bag, a dagger and his shard. It rested on his neck like an amulet with the rope he added to it. He passed a few villages and now was leaving the settled valley. The road began to rise up slightly as he was slowly closing to the western mountains. He decided to stop and rest for a bit after his long walk.

He knew where to go first, through the great portal, but he didn’t know what to do afterwards. The master told him only about this shard. He didn’t know if the other shards work the same. Maybe what the master told him is indeed true and he can feel the shards. But he still had to find the one the master was talking about. He said the shards will help him find him… Hiding behind the one who’s meek ? What does it mean ?

He kept walking until he reached a small open grassy area. He set down on the grass and opened his bag. He took out a bit of bread, a small fish and some strawberries. He began to eat. Right behind him a small light passed. Kail turned around but saw nothing. He began to eat the bread. The light slowly approached from behind. Kail noticed a slight glow and turned around. There was nothing behind him. It could be his imagination. The light began to quickly approach him. Kail turned around as a light ball flew towards him fast. He gave a scream and jumped back. The light hit the grass where he set, and began to chew the strawberries. Kail closed to the weird light that set in front of him. In the light he could see the contours of a small creature. “wait, you are a wandering light aren’t you ?” . They were small magical creatures that could use void magic. The wandering light quickly finished Kail’s berries and began to stare at Kail. Kail sent his hand towards it but it quickly took off and flew back. “Hey come back here !” he said. He looked at the eaten berries. “I know what you want” he said. He went back into the forest, the wandering light slowly followed him.

He quickly found a bush of Blackberries. He collected as much as he could and went back towards the wandering light. It set down on the ground, staring at Kail. Kail put the berries in front of him and backed off. The wandering light slowly closed to the berries and began to chew them quickly. Kail could see small white hands holding the berries that disappeared one by one in the bright light. He closed to it again but it ran away. “I see you don’t want to be friends with me” he said. He picked his stuff and began to walk back to the open field.

He passed through the field and went towards the western mountains when heard a loud noise. He looked around but couldn’t see anything. It sounded like a groan of a creature of some sort. Kail began to walk towards the noise. He reached a natural crater. Down in it was a small lake. A small river fell down from the edge into the lake. Yet what caught Kail’s eye wasn’t the lake. In the middle of the crater was a big dark creature. Suddenly the creature began to flap his wings, it was a dragon. The dragon flapped his wings again and again in an attempt to take off but he couldn’t do it. Kail carefully watched as the dragon was flapping his wings. After a few minutes it seemed like the dragon got tired. It went to the side of the crater and rolled in a circle and closed it’s eyes. Kail decided to get closer. He slowly landed in the crater and began to sneak towards the dragon. He always knew he is well too curious from time to time but this time he amazed even himself. He closed to the dragon when it suddenly roared and hit his wings, tossing Kail back. He stood up “Wow wow calm down, I wont hurt you” he said. The dragon gave another roar and hit his wings aggressively. Kail now realised how dumb was the thing he did. He stepped backwards a few steps and the dragon rolled again, yet watching him with it’s eyes. Kail backed off to the lake and set down. He took out his unfinished lunch. He quickly finished the bread and prepared to eat the fish. He gave a look at the dragon. It looked at him with it’s blue eyes. “What ?” he looked at the dragon. It kept starting at him. “You … you want this ?” he threw the fish to the dragon. It jumped towards the fish and swallowed it, then it backed up and kept staring at Kail. “Great now I feed the local fauna. I guess you couldn’t eat recently. What happened to you ? Can’t you fly ?” . The dragon kept staring at him. “alright I’ll get you some fish” he closed to the crater’s edge and dashed up.

He followed the small river. It was part of a bigger river flowing nearby. He began to look for fish. He created a force field and began to wait for fish to pass by. It took some time until he finally caught something in the force field. He pulled the fish towards himself and put it in his bag. “It’s not going nearly fast enough” though Kail. Suddenly he saw a glow from behind. He turned around, in front of him was the wandering light. It dropped something on the ground near Kail, it was a Fish. “So you want to be a friend ?” he asked. He pulled his hand towards the wandering light and touched it. It felt quite warm. Suddenly it took off and flew towards the lake. It began to circle a one spot. That spot slowly progressed with the flow. Kail created a force field there and pulled it up, he got a fish. The wandering light quickly went to another spot and Kail caught another fish. Soon enough his bag was filled with fish. Kail looked at the bag with satisfaction and prepared to go to the crater. The wandering light flew towards Kail and landed on his shoulder, suddenly glowing less. “I’ll call you twinkle” he said. They went back to the crater.

Soon they reached the crater. Kail jumped down. The dragon who was still lying on the ground stood up and began to flap his wings “Wow wow, calm down” said Kail. He backed to the lake where he set before with twinkle. The dragon calmed down and rolled in a circle again, staring at Kail. Kail opened his bag and took out a fish. He threw it towards the dragon. The dragon quickly jumped towards it and ate it, then backed off . Kail took out another fish and threw it. The dragon jumped towards it and ate it too. Kail began to throw fish, closer and closer towards himself. The dragon closed and closed to Kail , eating the fish. The dragon closed to another fish, it was in Kail’s hand. The dragon carefully smelled it and took it off his hand, chewing it carefully. Kail touched the dragon’s nose. He gave a slight blow, but let Kail to touch him. Kail took out another fish and gave it to the dragon. He looked at the dragon’s head. He didn’t look like the dragons he saw. He had much smaller horns. His scales were solid but felt a bit soft. “Are you a young dragon?” he wandered. He saw that the scales on his neck were softer. He began to pat his neck. The dragon gave a satisfied burble.

The dragon was now full of new powers. He went back to the middle of the crater and tried to take off again. He began to flaps his wings, he flapped and flapped but couldn’t get up in the air. The dragon gave a sad groan and set down. Kail looked at the dragon. “I remember that in the stories the dragons relied not only on their wings but also on their magic to fly…” . The dragon stood up and began to flap his wings again. Kail looked carefully at the dragon . He could see the dragon flapping but he couldn’t feel any energy coming from him. “Here , let me try to help” he said. He began to create a large force field around the dragon. The dragon began to flap his wings faster and faster. Suddenly his forward legs lifted off the ground, after that his other legs left the ground too. Kail barely could hold the enormous creature in air. He began to feel slightly less weight on the field. The dragon gave a happy roar a tried to get higher, Suddenly he began to fall and landed on the ground. Kail felt exhausted. “At least we are making progress.”. They set down ad stared at each other until Kail was ready again. Kail stood up and created another force field around the dragon. It began to flap his wings again. Kail could feel fait energy coming from the dragon. He began to rise up. Kail felt exhausted again and the dragon slowly landed down. On the third try Kail felt less exhausted as the dragon began to slowly create his own force field.

By evening they practiced quite a bit. Kail stood up, so did the dragon. He began to flap his wings again. This time however Kail didn’t help him. The dragon slowly rose up into the air. Kail couldn’t see the force field though. It was a slightly different magic from his. The dragon began to fly forward, accelerating more and more, he tried to pass over the crater but suddenly something went wrong. He began to fall and crashed into the lake. Kail ran towards the dragon who rose out of the water, luckily unharmed. “What went wrong?” he thought as he closed to the dragon. The dragon left the water and went back to the middle of the crater. They rested a bit until the dragon was ready to try again. “Let’s have a look at the problem” said Kail. He created a faint force field around the dragon just to try and guide him. He began to move the force field slightly to the left but when the dragon tried to follow the force field he began to fall. The dragon landed to the ground giving a sad groan.” It seems like you can fly but you can’t control your force field well. I can’t help you to control it though, you are too high above the ground” said Kail. “it’s getting dark. I will get some wood for a fire, we will try again tomorrow. Kail put a fire in the middle of the crater, near the dragon. He put his sleeping bag and prepared to sleep. Twinkle landed near him and set down, glowing much less now. “I see, you glow less when you land huh ? I guess you almost stop giving light when you sleep right ?” Twinkle gave a short chirp.
The following morning Kail woke up with an idea. He went with Twinkle to find some fish to eat and some fruits for Twinkle. Twinkle had some good senses and found fruits and fish quite easily. They returned to the crater and had a breakfast. After that the dragon was ready to fly again. Kail stood up and the dragon stood up too as if by signal. Kail closed to the dragon and put a hand on his nose. “Look friend, I have an idea on how to help you fly but you should give me a little more trust alright ?” Kail went around the dragon and began to slowly climb on his back. The dragon gave an angry groan but didn’t resist. He gave a light tap on his back and created a force field around him. The dragon began to flap his wings. He went up into the air . Kail leaned slightly forward and tried to move the force field with him. The dragon began to fly forward. He carefully flew towards the edge of the crater, trying to avoid sharp turns. The flew out of the crater as the dragon gave a happy roar. They kept flying until Kail saw an empty field to land on and they slowly descended towards it. The dragon landed on the grass and Kail jumped off. The dragon was breathing heavily but looked happy. “Great job my friend ! we will keep practising until you get better” he said. “Actually we didn’t give you a name yet …” The dragon began to run happily around the open area until he finally got satisfied with the new view and set down in the middle. The dragon looked much more active and fast now. “I know, I’ll call you Lightwing” he said. The dragon roared with satisfaction and gave a blow with his wings. “Wow, calm down friend” he said. Suddenly he stopped in his place. He felt something familiar about this blow. He stood up, entered a starting stance. He held his hands together, creating a force field and then pushing them to the sides, like a bird’s wings, like a dragon’s wings, sending a big force wave forward. He looked amazed at what he just did. It was just like Emily’s signature force wave. He turned towards Lightwing “The dragons are indeed the great masters of the void , thank you.”. Kail still wandered how did Lightwing get there. Most of the tamed dragons he ever saw were held in Highpeak , the home of the dragon riders. The dragons chose their masters out of many when the hatch there. The dragon will never abandon his master. It is unlikely that Lightwing was from there. Kail didn’t know about wild dragons in the area. In the legends he heard the great void dragons were giant and powerful creatures and never heard of any other kind of wild dragons.

Kail kept walking towards the western mountains, practising flying from time to time. They slowly began to climb up the western mountains. The forest became rarer and mostly consisted of pines. They climbed higher by the old, overgrown stone road. They entered a creek between two high mountains. To their right they could see Fort Nightfly, the last Alderian stronghold. They were leaving Alderon. They road kept climbing. Kail could see the mountains closing on the creek in the far. Finally he reached the furthest mountain, he will soon reach the portal.

Chapter 12 - Beyond the Portal
Spoiler:

The old road kept going up the mountain. A thin layer of snow covered it. The creek lead forward to the mountain peak that casted it’s shadow on the snowy ground and Kail as he walked up. Finally he reached it. In the mountain in front of him was a large cave, or a tunnel to be exact. The road led straight into it. Kail closed to the entrance. The tunnel seemed to lead through the mountain. He couldn’t see anything resembling a portal but he could see the light on the other side. “I guess there is no point to sit here, lets go in” he said and entered the tunnel. The tunnel was quite long and old. On the ceiling Kail could occasionally see white glowing crystal that gave some light yet the tunnel was mostly dark. Kail kept walking through it when suddenly he felt an unusual feeling, a strange magical aura. He knew he passed through the portal.

The tunnel kept going. Kail could see the end of it and began to walk quicker towards it in excitement. Finally he reached the exit. From the tunnel entrance he could see far away. He saw a large green valley with a forest . The stone road that lead him through the tunnel turned into a mud road, leading down the steep mountain slope. “Want to have a short fly fellow ?” he asked Lightwing and began to climb on him. Twinkles set down on Kail’s shoulder and they were ready to go. The dragon began to flap his wings and they took off.

Kail looked down the valley below him as the dragon flapped his wings. “Hey you should try to glide down” Lightwing straightened his wings and they began to glide slowly in the air. Kail kept looking down until he found a suitable landing place. They began to descend on an open area near a river. They landed down. Kail looked around. The forest looked quite ordinary for him, so did the river. He looked at the moss growing on the trees. If this world is indeed similar to his the moss should point North. He could now tell that the mountain he came from lies in the South. He could see another chain of mountains to the West. Even though the world looked familiar he didn’t know anything about it, especially not where things were and where should he go now. He ha a look at the shard but he couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary in it. The master told it will help him but how ? Maybe it is trying to tell him something and he cant understand it ? He looked at the shard again but saw nothing unusual in it no matter how hard he tried. “If we don’t know where to go, I guess it doesn’t matter where we go, we should just keep moving.” He thought and began to walk towards the mountains.

The sun began to set down . Kail found an open area for a camp. He closed to Lightwing “Hey want to have another fly ? We’ll try to find a river for you”. He climbed on Lightwing and took off. Kail looked down and found a river not that far away. He also noticed that Lightwing barely needed his help to steer himself. He relied on Kail’s light touches to give him direction but could fly alone. Kail gave
Him two light taps and the dragon began to descend. Kail was amazed how simple it is to communicate with the dragon even though they are a short time together. Lightwing landed and Kail jumped off. “Good work my friend, you are getting better” he said. “Now you should stay here while me and twinkle will bring us lunch.”. Lightwing gave a sad groan and rolled in a circle “Don’t worry I’ll be back soon”.

They went to the river Kail saw before. Twinkle began to point at fish as before and Kail was catching it. After a while Twinkle flew back to Kail. He chirped slightly and flew into the forest. Kail followed him until they reached a berry bush. “Of course you are also hungry fellow … you can eat those and maybe bring some back, I will try to catch some more fish in the meanwhile. Kail tried to fish alone but all he could get is a single fish. “That goes to nowhere” he thought and prepared to return back to the camp when he heard some noise. He looked around but couldn’t find anything when suddenly a wooden rod flew straight into his face. “Aaaw” he backed off, “Elian it’s a human !” “I’m sorry I’m just trying to get food here !”. In front of Kail stood two people, a boy and a girl. They looked quite similar, both had blond hair and blue eyes. They wore gray cloth. Kail looked at the rod that hit him in the face and picked it up. “You … hunt … with this ? It doesn’t even have a sharp edge.” “At least I’m trying ! I didn’t see you catching anything …” Kail opened his bag, full of fish. The boy slightly flushed while the girl laughed slightly at him. “My name is Liana and this is my brother Elian, and you don’t look like a local.” “My name is Kail” he replied. “We’re just setting for the night in our camp by the road, want to join us ?” “Well I have a camp set up already …” the world road and some company weren’t that bad “Is it far away from here ?” “Not at all, it’s quite close” “Alright then show me the way”.

They walked for a bit until they reached a road. “Actually I saw some big beast flying in the sky earlier” said Elian. “Oh it could be my dragon” Elian laughed slightly “nice one, he was fire breathing and eating humans ?” “not exactly, he eats fish” “Oh and that’s why you have a bag full of them. I like your jokes” “It’s not” ”Alright alright we got it.” They kept walking when suddenly an arrow hit the ground near Kail. They turned around to see a group of caped men in the bushes near the road. “Money and Jewelleries, quick !” said one of them. Kail entered a starting stance and prepared to fight. A few of the bandits began to run towards them with swords. Kail created a large force wave and pushed them away. Another group of bandits began to run towards them from behind. A powerful wind hit them and threw them away. Liana cast wind towards the bandits. Suddenly they began to sink in the ground. “That bandits is an earth mage !” “I’ll get him !” said Elian and began to run towards the earth mage. He quickly raised up a rock and threw at Elian, knocking him out. Kail kept sinking and half of his body was underground already. “Alright stop, we need them intact” said one of the bandits. They raised them out of the ground and tied to a tree. One of the bandits closed to Kail. He noticed the shard and took it. “thank you …” he said and took out a knife and closed it to Kail’s throat. Suddenly he felt the ground shaking and a powerful roar. Lightwing created a force wave and pushed away some bandits. The earth mage tried to sink Lightwing but he smashed him into a tree with his wing. The rest of the bandits began to run away in terror. Twinkle closed to Kail and began to cut the rope with a beam. “What’s going on there ? “ asked Elian who was tied to the other side of the tree. The rope was cut and they could stand up. “Thanks whoever … WOAAAH !” screamed Elian when he bumped into Lightwing’s head. “Get this thing away from me !” he ran back to the tree “Calm down it’s Lightwing, he’s a friend” “He’s a cute fellow” said Liana and pat his neck. “Anyway setting a camp by the road is not a good idea. Take all your stuff and we’ll fly to my camp.” . Kail picked up the shard the bandit threw on the ground and climbed on Lightwing. He helped Liana to get on the dragon “I’m not climbing on that … thing” “Oh c’mon Elian and what if they let you ride a Windhawk ? “. He looked at the dragon “Alright alright.”

They set up a camp and put on fire. Lightwing ate his fish to the side with twinkle chewing blackberries nearby. “Are you some sort of a weird air mage ?” “asked Elian. “He’s not. He didn’t push any air forward, in fact the air around him didn’t move at all. It’s not air magic” “She is right, I’m a void mage.” “A what ? Void mage ? Is that one of those little casts of fanatics who claim they invented a fifth country ?”. The question itself sounded weird for Kail, have they never heard of void mages before ? “No, I came from Alderion “ “Alright , after what I’ve seen today I won’t even argue about that one …” “And you, where are you from ?” “Oh the city of Highwind, on the Varus mountains to the west.” “Are you air mages ? “ “Well Liana is , we’re Lumians if that’s what you mean.”. Liana seemed to be quite a cheerful person. She smiled a lot and took things quite easily. Her brother seemed to be quite the opposite. He was sarcastic and seemed to see the empty half of the cup in the life.

“So what are you doing so far from ade … ade” “Alderon” “Yea this … is that even far away from here ?” asked Elian. “Depends on how you look at it.” “What do you mean?” “In theory far beyond this place, technically right in that mountain” “Uh yea, that makes sense … So what are you doing here ?” “I’m here on my great trial.” “What is that ?” “It’s a ritual all people pass in Alderon. We are given a quest and can only return home once we complete it” “That sounds horrible to me” said Liana “Well it’s my duty. That’s how we survived for hundreds of years” “And what happens if you fail the quest ? Are you exiled forever ?” “Well … you can return but it’s a great shame on your and your family. I’d rather die than return with empty hands … Maybe that is why I never heard of people who failed their quest. You also seem to be away from home, where are you heading?” “Home, to Highwind.” “What were you doing ?” “I can’t tell you, sorry” “Alright, can I go with you ?” “No we are already …” “Why not?” said Liana “Because we are…” “oh c’mon Elian” “I’ll give you a ride “ said Kail. “Alright , just people won’t take kindly to Dragons flying into the city or some weird flying light balls. How do you even sleep with that ?” “He’s glowing less when he sleeps” “Alright … Anyway we don’t want to attract too much attention. You might also consider to change those cloths.” “What’s with the secrecy ?” “Just do it. We’ll find you some cloth and a place for your creatures… We have a long way ahead anyway”

The following morning Kail went to the river to fill his bag again. Liana watched with interest how he picks the fish while Twinkle searches for more. “I’ve never seen similar magic before.” “I’ve never seen air magic before but it’s quite easy to imagine, unlike void magic.” “What is it ? I saw people moving elements around but never I saw them moving … nothing.” “Well it’s not exactly nothing. You can say I move energy around.” “How can you do that ? How does energy look like ?” “It doesn’t have form unless we give it one, or at least I don’t know how to use pure energy. It’s something abstract, like the creator” “Who ?” “The creator” “Who is he ? The creator …” “Have you never heard of him ? The powerful being that created this world and gave us life ?” “No, I never heard of him, how does he look like ?” “He doesn’t have a form like we know. Have you never asked yourself how the world was created ?” “I don’t know, maybe the great spirits made it.” “The great spirits ? Who are they ?” “The souls of the dead that observe us” “How could they create the world if they are souls of the dead ? They had to die first …” “Those are also the souls that never got a form on earth.” “But who created them ?” “I don’t know, who created the Creator ?” “I don’t know either, he just exists” “Maybe the creator is also a spirit …” “Maybe.”. Twinkle pointed at another fish and Kail caught it. “At least your creator is making us breakfast” she smiled.

After breakfast they began to fold the camp. Kail went towards Lightwing to mount him but Elian stopped him “Sorry, we’ll have to walk on this one” “Why ? He can carry us all” “No just trust me alright ? We better stick to the ground.” “Alright, as you say” “We should get going. The road will take us to Highwind.”. They folded the camp and began to walk. While the lands beyond the portal didn’t look as alien as he thought they would he still didn’t orientate well in it. He was glad to have some company along the way. He didn’t know where to go yet, he knew he had to find the shards but he didn’t know where to begin his search. “They go to a big city, people surely heard there about something like that, and even if not it’s better than sitting in one spot” he thought. “How far is Highwind by the way ?” “A few days of walk from here.” Kail kept walking “Interesting how Highwind looks like. I guess I’ll have to walk to find out” he thought.

The light flickered in the end of the long dark corridor through the half open door. A man in black armor walked through the corridor with a scroll in his hand. He opened the door and went inside. In the middle of the room was a large table with a map on it. A young looking man in black armor set in front of it. “Sir we will soon arrive at the given coordinates “ he handed the scroll. The young man opened it and looked inside, then on his map and crushed the paper. “We are still off-schedule!” he threw the paper on the floor near the freighted man. “You know it’s not his fault.” Said another person sitting near the map. He was much older than the rest in the room. He wore a black robe with a cape. “This is my only chance to win the throne and the trust of my father !” “Or die my prince” “I don’t care about death! It is meaningless in this task. Master, it is you who said we have purpose bigger than our lives” “And you think it is your purpose?” “I’m sure in it. The search for that guardian has already begun, and I cannot be late, not this time ! Guardian, wherever you hide, wherever you’ll run, I’ll find you … and kill you! “

The end of Twelfth chapter.
Chapter 13 – New Threat
Spoiler:

Kail quickly began to regret he chose to walk. Carrying all the food on his back was not as easy as he would expect. “This fish is killing me, maybe we should stop for a break and feed it to Lightwing” “No, we should keep going or we’ll never reach Highwind.” replied Elian “We’d be there already if you weren’t a chicken each time we ride Lightwing” said Liana. Elian flushed a bit “You know we can’t, and I’m not afraid of him !” “Yes you are !” “NO I’m not !".

They kept walking until they reached a small field. “We can rest here” Elian said. Kail set down on the grass and threw the bag on the ground, Lightwing closed to Kail and gave a short groan. “What’s wrong my friend ?”. He flapped his wings a few times and looked up. “You want me to fly with you ? Is that it ? Sorry but Elian said we can’t “. Lightwing rolled down near Kail. Kail looked up the clear sky. It could be indeed a nice day for flying. Kail still wandered what were those two doing that far from their city. He looked at Elian who set down below a tree, trying to catch a sleep. Liana on the other side played with a piece of wood she found, blowing it around with air.

The sun passed the middle of the sky and slowly began to descend back to the night. They began to go again. Kail looked around the road bending into the undergrowth. He kept walking, watching silently. He heard water flowing nearby, soon he saw a little lake near the road. In the middle of it was a large rock with a big crack in the middle. The riven rock was covered with moss and only it’s peaks could be seen through it.

The first rays of light passed through the window and fell on the still warm bed. The light smell of spring could be felt in the home, if there was anyone to feel. Outside of the village gathered the villagers to greet their heroes. It was always important for the Alderian generals to keep the morale high and nothing will warm a legionary’s heart more than some good ale and warm bed at home for the holidays. A small column of legionaries passed through the gates. The heavy Nepheline armor was carefully cleaned till it shined in the sunlight. Kail watched the passing column until he saw his father. His armor was much darker than the others and he wore a black cape on his back. Kail ran towards his father and hugged him. He took the heavy shield from his hands and helped him carry it. The heavy shield was not easy to carry but Kail kept carrying it the best he could. He didn’t even notice the small blood drop on the handle. His mother hugged and kissed his father and they all went home. “Give me that shield, it’s too heavy for you” said his father. “No, if I can’t carry a shield how will I be a legionary ?” said Kail. “You are just eight years old, you shouldn’t worry about it, you will grow stronger and become a fearsome warrior , I’m sure”.

He ran into the house . His mother helped his father to take off the heavy armor. “Wear those cloths” she said “No I’m alright” he answered but she was already taking off his shirt, revealing a large scar along the torso. Kail’s mother looked at the scar “It’s nothing to worry about, it will disappear soon.” He said. Kail’s mother took some cloth she had, some water, some weeds and flowers from the shelf and began to clean the wound. “It’s nothing to worry about , really“ he said “Are you afraid of some pain Mr. Sceptii ?” she smiled. Kail took out his father’s sword. It was cleaned very well, to hide the blood it shed. Kail looked at the curved Palandros sword . It was covered in carvings and had a small dragon on the tip of the handle. He looked with smile at his father “We are going to spend all the day together !” “Sure we will” he smiled back “When your father finishes his meal and medical treatment” said his mother, tying his wound with a piece of cloth.

Kail’s father was sitting near the table, eating. He didn’t get a decent meal in months now and the food Kail’s mother prepared seemed like royal lunch for him. “Can we go now please ?” asked Kail “If your mother lets me go” he smiled “Please mom” he looked at her “Alright , just be back before the dusk” she answered. The went down to the river near the village. Kail was carrying the sword behind him. They set down near the river. His father was telling him tales about the battles he saw and the places he was in. Kail was listening carefully to his father. He was a good story teller. “And then you raised the sword like this ?” Kail raised the heavy sword up. “Let me show you how” he took the sword and slashed forward then hit again and stabbed forward. “I want to try !” he said. He gave Kail a wooden stick. “To use the sword properly you must let it move fluently. You raise the sword slowly and slash quickly.” He demonstrated. “Use one hand to duel with your opponent and two hands to strike him.”. They kept practising . Kail was trying to hit as hard as possible. Hr was getting tired a bit. “Enough for today ? “ “No, you promised to spend the day with me remember ?” “Alright, you just look a bit tired. You should know though that you shouldn’t spend all of your powers on the strike. Plan it carefully and strike accurately, and when you will even the hardest enemy will fall before you” he stroked at a rock near him, splitting it’s peak into two. “And what happens to him then ? What happens to the dead ?” “Only the creator knows what awaits our souls when we die, as for our body, it will become part of this world. The moss will soon grow over this rock, covering what it once was.”

“We’ll make a stop here” said Elian. They set up a camp. The sun was disappearing in the horizon as the cold night air filled the sky. Liana cooked a dinner with the food they had. After eating they set down around the fire. “Tell us about your land, how does it look like ?” asked Liana. “Not that different from this place. There are the Western mountains where the portal to this world lies , there is the White sea to the south, the Diadean mountains to the North and the white forest in the middle. It looks similar to the forest here, maybe other creatures wandering around.” “And the cities ? Do you have cities ?” “Yes, there is the capital of course – Noor Aylard. It’s a wonderful city and a big one. It’s crystal tower goes high into the sky. You can see it from almost any corner of the white forest.” “Wish I could see it”. “Alright enough chatting. We have to get up early tomorrow” said Elian “You always blow up the fun” “Just go to sleep, you will have all the way to Highwind to talk”. Kail went to Lightwing “You should go to sleep fellow” he said. Lightwing gave a sad groan and looked up into the sky. “Alright alright, one time, just to keep you in shape.”. He climbed on Lightwing and they took off.

The cold night air passed through the open balcony. “You should stop worrying that much prince Telion, sit down and enjoy this beautiful scenery” “I Don’t have time for this now, I should find the guardian.” “You should sit down and relax a bit my prince.” The prince set down near his master “Have a look at this beautiful nature, it is slightly different than what you’re used to” “Yes, but it doesn’t help me at all master” “Just relax and let your thoughts flow. You will see how the answer just flies into your head” he smiled. Suddenly the prince jumped up “Wait did you see that ? “ “Where ?” “Over there, I saw something flying, and it was big” he said. “Does that mean my day off cancels? “ “It lands over there. Captain direct us towards there.” “Oh I feared you’d say that …” the master sighed.

Kail landed down on an open area in the forest. “You’re doing well” he patted Lightwing’s neck. “I just look at you and think how can you understand me so well”. “Landing party on me !” shouted prince Telion. “Are you sure this is necessary my prince ?” said the master “Yes I’m sure. Bring me my helmet.” He put a black helmet on his head, covering his whole face. “Alright I’ll wait you here” said the master “Anybody cards in the meanwhile ?”. Kail set down on a rock near Lightwing. “I’m thinking more about home now, about my father, do I miss home already ? Do you miss home ?”. Suddenly Lightwing turned his attention to the bushes ahead. “Anything’s wrong ?” he looked at the dragon. Suddenly a dark stream appeared out of the bush. Kail barely dodged it. A group of people in dark armor appeared in front of him. On of them cast another dark stream at Kail. He dodged it, falling on the ground. He quickly stood up. Suddenly the man in dark armor froze in place. Kail looked around. He suddenly noticed that the chain with the shard was out of his tunic. “Catch him !” shouted the man in dark armor and the others began to run towards him. Suddenly Lightwing jumped towards them and blew them away with a force wave. “We better get out of here” Kail quickly climbed up on Lightwing and they took off. The prince looked up into the sky and began to run back.

“So the hunt was successful ?” asked the master. “Captain set course to the North, follow that dragon !” “So I assume it was successful” he said. “How can it be successful ? We haven’t caught him yet !” “But you know now the right course.”. The prince stopped for a second and then answered “yes … You were right, the answered flew into my head, and I’m not letting it to fly away !”

Kail landed back at the camp. “Wake up, we need to get out of here, climb on the dragon” he said. “Wh … wha … what ? What’s with the hurry ?” said Elian “A bunch of people in black armor are chasing us right now. I saw them when I flew over the valley” “YOU DID WHAT ?! I’ve told you not to fly on that damn thing !” “There is no time for this just climb” said Liana. They quickly climbed up and took off. Kail tried to fly as low as possible so they won’t be detected. He began to fly west. They kept flying for almost an hour before the finally landed. “I think we’ve lost them” said Kail climbing down . “Why the hell did you fly ? I’ve told you not to ! And now see what happens !” “You are running away from them ? “ “Thanks to you we are !” “You mean you don’t know them ?” “I don’t have even a slightest idea who they are. This is why I was against travelling with strangers, you always insist doing the opposite of what I say and we always end up in stuff like this ! And I’ve told you this is gonna happen !” he said to Liana. “Do you even know why they chased you ?” “I don’t know, I never met them before.” “Maybe if you didn’t fly with your dragon we wouldn’t have to ask ourselves this question !” “And maybe if he didn’t fly and see them they would have killed us long ago. We should all sleep now and quit arguing.” She answered. Elian looked at her then at Kail. “Fine, only because I’m tired as hell, but don’t think you avoided this discussion.”

The burnt wood where the fire once was still smoked a bit when a large shadow suddenly covered it. “It’s a camp sir. It was abandoned not long ago.” “It’s probably where he slept.” Said the prince “Here was the sleeping back.. actually here are another two sleeping bags. Looks like our friend is not alone. The fire still smokes a bit which means they left not long ago.” He looked around, searching for clues. “They set up their camp not far from a road – over there, that means they were travelling by it. This road leads west, Captain set up a new course, we are going west !” “May I asked what sparkled your interest, my prince ?” “The crystal on that boy’s chest. He will lead us to the guardian. This discovery may put as ahead of anyone else and I’m not missing this opportunity !”

Chapter 14 - The Dark Star
Spoiler:

A small light shined in the middle of the darkness, it slowly grew bigger as Kail closed to it. It emitted a warm aura, a living one. Kail closed to the light. Suddenly he heard “Find me” and the light faded away. The darkness quickly surrounded Kail and he began to fall.

Kail woke up in sweat. He looked around. Elian and Liana were still sleeping in their bags. He left his sleeping bag and set by a tree nearby. “Something’s wrong ?” asked Liana who noticed him leaving the bag. “I’m fine, just a bad night.” He looked around searching for the men in black armor but he could see no one. Who are they ? Why do they chase him ? It was probably a bad idea to take a fly… He wandered what Elian knows about all of this. Are they running away from those men ? Kail had too many questions in mind. He went back to the sleeping bag.

The following morning they began to walk by the road again. The woods seemed as usually but Kail kept looking around for the men in black armor. The road began to climb up the mountains. “We are not so far from home now” said Elian. The woods began to change. The trees became rarer and the ground became rocky. The road kept going up. A cliff began to appear to their left. Through the rare trees Kail could see high mountain peaks in the distance. Below he could see the forest. He kept searching for the men in black armor. They hunted him ever since he first met them. He remembered how one of them casted a dark beam at him, he’s never seen anything like it. And the light ? It felt more like the light was chasing him rather than he was searching for it…

The road bended around the mountain, revealing a small settlement in front of them. “Varus Gate, we’re almost home” said Elian. “You can’t go in with that outfit riding on your gigantic pet, we need to find you some cloths and a place for your dragon, … and that glowing thing on your shoulder.” Twinkle chirped at him. “You stay here we’ll be right back”. They went towards the village. It seemed like an ordinary village for Kail. The houses were built with stone though, or rather a combination of wood and stone. Giving them a unique texture.

Elian went towards one of the houses and knocked on the door. “Mr. Norle “. A slightly old man opened the door. He had a bald head ,a short gray beard and wore a white robe “Oh Elian, Liana, come in.”. They came into the house “I’m sure your father will be glad to hear you’re back from your journey” “Actually we have a little favor to ask. Do you have any spare robes ? We need one” “A spare robe ? Is your torn or something ? “ “No , it’s just … oh well you better see for yourself …” . They went out of the house and went back to the road. Kail was waiting for them with Twinkle and Lightwing. The old man closed to them. “So this is our problem” Elian pointed at Kail and the dragon. “I see …” he nodded. “This is Mr. Norle, he is a friend of our family” said Liana. “Yea also we need to ask from you another thing , we need you to … well take care of the dragon.” Mr. Norle looked at the winged beast “Do you want me to keep… this ? Should I prepare the barn for it?” “Yes please “ said Liana “I was being sarcastic, but well it can’t go any worse can’t it ?” He looked at the dragon “So how is he called? “ “Lightwing” answered Kail “I really hope it eats grass though, keeping this beast fed can be a problem” “He eats fish, but don’t worry Twinkle will help you find some” Twinkle closed to Mr. Norle and began to examine him from different angles.

The robe set fine on Kail. “Now you look like a an air mage “ said Elian. “So now we go to Highwind ?” asked Kail “Yes, unless you’re not coming with us of course “ said Liana. The road lead to the mountains on the other side of the ridge. Mr. Norle looked at them disappearing in the distance. Lightwing gave a short groan “I know you miss them a bit but you have to remain quiet, I’ll find you some food if this will keep you happy. They always go … Varus Gate is not a place where many stay”. He Closed the barn and went away. He kept walking until he met a man in a black robe “Excuse me sir, Professor Knomuch from the Grindingsticks academy, and this is my apprentice Snottynose. We are observing the migration of local big birds. Have you seen any interesting or big birds passing by in the recent days ?” “No, I barely look at the sky in those cloudy days …” “At least we’ll be sure the light we see in the end is not the sun” the professor laughed slightly “In our age it becomes a concern indeed, good luck with your studies.” The two robbed men walked away “Err master why you have to embarrass me all the time ! Those ridiculous names, where the hell did they come from ? “ “Snottynose was an obvious choice, the rest was the first thing that came up my mind. You haven’t seen new people in a long time my prince, you should enjoy those encounters more frequently “ “At least we know they didn’t fly over there, they probably took the road”

Kail kept walking along the road. He will soon reach Highwind. He’s never seen a Lumian city before, how does it look like ? And what will he do when he finally reaches it ? He haven’t planned ahead . Maybe he should ask around if anybody knows something about the shard… somehow he felt that he won’t get the answer this way. “Sir, down there, it seems like a few travellers are on this road” “Let me see” said the prince “Humm, they all wear white cloths and I can’t see any dragons around, They might have seen something though, bring us down”. Kail kept walking the road when suddenly he heard a noise behind them. He turned around and was surprised to see a man in the same black armor standing near another hooded man, The man in black armor was also surprised “That’s him !”. They turned around facing each other. The man’s helmet was off so Kail could see his face. The man seemed quite young, he had a short, black, slightly chaotic hair. His black eyes seemed to emit hatred. The man casted a black beam at Kail. He blocked it with a force shield and shot a force ball at him. He dodged and went into starting stance again. “Don’t stand there like a rock, do something !” he shouted at the robbed man. Liana blew wind at the hooded man but he absorbed the strike creating a black smoke. The armored man waved with his hand and suddenly a shadow began to appear around Kail. He looked up into the sky and noticed a giant thing floating above them, slowly appearing in the middle of the air. It was a giant, black, star shaped object. It had 6 spires going into each direction and 8 smaller ones in between them in the corners. The whole object was made out of a dark purple crystal, with added structure in the middle of the star. The star’s lower spire began to close to them. A black aura appeared around it and a black smoke surrounded them. Kail felt a weird feeling as if he was pulled up, suddenly the whole area around him filled in smoke. It disappeared as quickly as it appeared but the area around him was different. He wasn’t on the road anymore but instead in a large dark hall, they were inside the star. They were quickly surrounded by more men in black armor. “Do you accept surrender ?” Elian looked around.

“Take those to a cell, leave this one here, I want to talk” said the prince. Two men in black armor closed to Kail, and tied him to a chair in front of the prince. “Who are you ?” said Kail “I am prince Telion, and this is all you need to know” he looked coldly at Kail. “Thank you for the shard.” He took the shard off him. Kail finally understood why they were chasing him, he saw the shard when Kail fell to the ground on their first encounter, but why do they want it ? “We are one step closer now” said the prince “And what are you planning to do with it, my prince ?” “I don’t know, we’ll see. You, where did you find it ?” he looked at Kail. Kail didn’t answer “Playing tough ? You probably don’t even know what it is. You are useless to me, so look closely at me because it’s the last thing you gonna see” “What ? Don’t have the guts to fight me ? The spoiled little prince will ask for help in killing me ? “ “ENOUGH !” The prince smashed Kail into the wall. The chair fell apart and Kail stood up. The prince jumped forward to strike at Kail but he quickly dodged and ran towards the shard, lying on the ground. He picked it up and ran out of the corridor. The prince stood up “ERR DO SOMETHING !” he shouted at the master “I thought you wanted to duel” he replied kindly. The prince ran after Kail.

Kail kept running the dark corridors. He passed through a few guards who didn’t understand what’s going on at first until they saw the prince running after him “CATCH HIM !”. Kail looked for the cells where Elian and Liana could be kept. He dashed through the corridors downstairs, opening doors he saw. He dashed into another corridor when suddenly a closed door with two guards appeared in front of him. He didn’t have time to stop and crashed into it. The confused guards looked at him standing up. Kail quickly blasted them aside and began to open the door. It was locked though. Kail began to look for a key. He found a key ring on one of the guards and began to try them one by one. Finally he reached the one that opens it and ran inside. He entered some sort of a dungeon with holding cells around. Elian and Liana set in one of them. He closed to the cell and began to try the keys “Kail !” “You came back for us ? “ said Elian . He opened the door “follow me”. They ran back to the corridor he came from “No the other way” he shouted and ran into another corridor as the prince and a whole bunch of guards appeared in the middle of it. The corridor led to another set of stairs. They went up to the top and turned left in the corridor. They opened the doors one by one searching for escape route . They opened one of the doors and were hit by powerful light. They stepped into a balcony. The star was drifting high above the ground . Below them he could still see the road the walked by. “We gotta jump” said Kail. Elian looked down from the balcony “ARE YOU CRAZY ?!” “I’m going to get you down, just stand there” he pointed. He created a force field around Elian and began to pull him slowly down “Cover my back” he said to Liana. She stood in front of the door and prepared to fight. A few guards ran through the door. She quickly blasted them with a powerful wind back through the door. “They’re on the balcony!” he heard shouts and noise down the corridor. Soon two guards stood on a balcony above them and shot black beams at Kail. Kail dodged aside and Liana blasted them back. Elian began to fall down but Kail caught him as quickly as he could “DON’T KILL ME !” he shouted “I’m trying !” . Elian was half way down already. Liana Blasted herself up the balcony above them to clear it out and then jumped back down. Kail began to lower Elian quickly. Finally Elian touched the ground, and right on time. The prince ran straight into the balcony “JUMP !” . Kail and Liana began to fall down. Kail quickly created a force field around himself and began to dash down towards Elian. Liana blew wind below her, slowing the fall until she reached the ground. “They’re escaping ! Get us lower and bombard them with our cannon !” the prince shouted. One of the smaller spires began to glow in a black aura. “What are they doing ?” said Liana “I think it’s bad, it’s really bad ! Run !” shouted Elian. Kail felt a warm feeling, it felt familiar. He pulled out his shard and began to hold it in his hand. The shard began to glow in white. He couldn’t feel the shard anymore, instead he felt a warm aura in his hands. “The cannon is almost charged sir, just a few more seconds !” The prince looked nervously down “Shoot it already !”. The light in Kail’s hands grew bigger and bigger, finally Kail took that light and pushed it away from him. A bright white beam appeared from it and went straight at the dark the dark star. The white beam cut off The small spire and a powerful explosion appeared where it once was. The smoking star began to decent “We should get out of here !” shouted Elian and they began to run. They kept running and running, the road where they once were disappeared behind the mountain. Kail looked back, he couldn’t see the star anywhere “That was amazing” said Liana “Amazing ?! We almost died there” said Elian, breathing heavily. “We should keep moving”

The whole balcony was covered in smoke “We got her down sir” said one of the guards. The prince looked at him angrily and he began to shake “What an amazing power” the master noted. “He was in my hands but now I don’t have a shard nor a ship !” the prince shouted. “I underestimated you , I won’t do it again, next time I will kill you …” “So turns out he does know about the shard” the master noted. “You won’t be able to get him when your ship is in such bad shape.” “Status report, how were we hit ?” “Hard sir, left navigation is offline and the hull there is breaking apart. We’ve lost a cannon bu, but the main core is intact … sir” he looked frightened at the prince. “we can fix it on our own but we need materials” “I might know where to find them my prince, but you might not like the idea …”

“How far are we from Highwind ?” asked Kail. “Less than a day travel, we should be safe there” said Elian “We won’t reach it today though, we better set up a camp off the road and watch in turns”. They set up a camp and prepared to sleep. Kail volunteered to watch first. He set down near the others, watching around and thinking about the recent events. He haven’t seen anything like that star before. That prince, the shard, it was all new. Too many questions and not enough answers, and what it has to do with his trial ?

“Prince Telion, master Denti, it is a honor to have you here with me. What brought you that far from home ?” The prince could barely hide his hatred and annoyance. In front of him set a man in a red tunic. He had a pointy brown beard and a short brown hair. He was a man in his forties , he didn’t look that young but wasn’t old either. His slightly cunning facial expression gave away his slight amusement from the situation. “Our ship suffered a breakdown and we need materials to repair it” said the master, trying to avoid the questioning. “That is unfortunate, how did such thing happen ?” “A .. a standard malfunction with catastrophic results” said the prince. “I guess we can spare a few parts for you.” suddenly a guard entered the room “Sir the scouts confirmed the outer hull was blown up , assumingly from outside” “So what did you say about the breakdown ?”

Chapter 15 - Highwind
Spoiler:

The early light rays shined on Kail’s sleeping bag. He met the dawn with open eyes, it was hard to sleep after what happened yesterday. He watched over the camp almost half night until he couldn’t sit anymore and he finally woke up Elian, but even after that he couldn’t fall asleep. It seemed like Elian felt quite the same as he watched the camp straight until dawn, they didn’t wake up Liana. “It’s dawn now, we should keep going” said Elian and they began to fold the camp.

The road went over the valley below them. Old, big trees grew around the mountain but Kail could see grassy plains further away. “We should see it any moment now” said Elian. They passed a curve in the mountain when a beautiful scenery revealed itself before Kail. On the further side of the mountain he could see a huge city. The city was built on the steep mountain slope. It consisted of dozens of high, thin towers, going up into the sky. Between those towers Kail could see bridges and walkways, alcoves and terraces. The city went higher and higher around a bigger tower which towered above them all, with a giant hawk statue above it. On the other side Kail could see another big tower near what looked like a market. “It is beautiful” “More like annoying, going all those stairs all the time …” “Don’t listen to him, it’s a nice view from out there and a it’s fun to glide around “ “Maybe for you because you’re an air mage …”

They closed to the city gates. Kail could see four guards standing near it. Their armor was different from the Legionary armor – They wore a light chainmail cuirass with white cloth covering it. They wore pointy iron helmets and held wooden spears with a thin iron blade on top. The gate lead to a long plaza, passing between the thinner towers and through the bigger one. “It’s quite quiet here “ Kail noted “most of the people go the market area on the other side of the city, the rest are spread between all those corridors in the towers so it is really not crowded here”. They began to go up one of the streets to the upper levels, then entered a big door. It led to an alcove with a view over the city. They kept going up. “You can describe the city as a bunch of walkways and corridors leading to small courtyards and the big plazas on each main level”. They went out to another plaza and kept going towards the main tower. “What’s on top of this tower ?” “The city council. They won’t let you in so you better stay down here” “Hang out around this plaza and we will show you the city” said Liana and they went into the tower. “At least I’ll always find my way back to this big tower, unless I manage to get lost in those alcoves” he thought and began to walk.

Most of the people around wore white cloths like he did, with occasional golden patterns on the cloths. The Lumians had a very distinct appearance. Some of them had blond hair, some had black one, most of them had blue eyes. They were mostly average in size. The men had similar short haircuts to the Alderian ones which helped Kail to blend in. Suddenly he turned around to see two Lumian guards standing in front of him “we are ordered to arrest you, follow us” “Arrest me ? For what ?” one of the guards pushed him silently with the spear and he began walking. They went towards another high tower. Above it Kail could see big birds landing and taking off periodically. “Maybe it is where they hold those windhawks” he thought. They went down the tower to the holding cells “Get in” one of the guards pushed him into the cell and locked the door. Kail looked around the cell – a bed and a small wooden table was all of the furniture he had. Near the bed was a thin window , Kail could look out of it but couldn’t pass through it. He could see the market down from there. What was he arrested for ? IS it because he’s a foreigner ? Does it have anything to do with Elian and Liana ? or the men in black armor ? Probably he’ll find out soon. Should he try to escape ? He has an important task but yet he could get Elian and Liana in trouble if they figure he came with them. He should probably wait until he knows his crime. After a while a guard came to the door and pushed a plate with food through the door. “Why am I arrested ?” he asked “By the request of the Neferonian Ambassador “ he answered and went out.

The sun began to set down outside. Kail looked out of the window at the market district. The merchants began to close their stands and go home. Lights began to appear on the nearby towers. The city began to prepare for the night, he should be preparing too. Suddenly he heard the iron door opening on the far side of the corridor. “You are out of your mind ! You know what will happen if you do that ?!” Kail could see Elian and Liana closing to the door. “Hang in there we’ll get your out of here” “You are going to get everyone in trouble” “I won’t if nobody will know” “I don’t want you to get in trouble because of me” said Kail “See? He doesn’t want to go , now lets leave …” Laina gave an angry look at Elian and he shut up. She took out a key ring and opened the door “Follow me”. They ran down the tower and out to one of the walkways. “The gates are well guarded at this time so you better leave through the port” “Where’s all of the guards ? “ Kail wondered as he didn’t see any in the tower at all “Just go”. They reached the market district gate when suddenly a few men appeared in the gate. It was a man coated in a red tunic, escorted by four other men in red steel armor. “I see you’re not happy with our hospitality, I bet those idiots will get a better cell for you on our ship” said the man in red tunic. The guards around the gate began to point their spears towards Kail. Two guards went forward to arrest Kail. Suddenly Liana stepped forward to protect him. “Liana what are you doing ? Get out of there !” shouted Elian. “You are rebelling against my will ? The punishment for rebelling against the Neferonian empire is death ! Burn them .” The red guards prepared fire balls in their hands but suddenly another man stepped forward. He began to point his spear at the red guards “Back off or I will kill you” “You back off councillor or else you are a rebel as well.” “You are not welcome here anymore, guards show them the way to their ship.” The white guards moved their spears from Kail to the men in red. “So be it, I will return councillor but next time we meet you will be chained in front of me on the remnants of your burnt city” The man in red tunic turned away and walked to the port. They went on the airship that stood in the dock and the airship began to slowly move away.

The councillor looked at the Kail and Liana. “What have you done … “ he looked with anger at them “It’s not their fault father it was my idea” said Elian. The councillor looked at Elian “I didn’t expect it to come from you, I’m disappointed, and you, I don’t know who you are or why they want you but you did enough trouble to our city, you must leave. Prepare the city, they will come with the dawn I want every man who can hold a sword in this city at the main plaza, the women, children and elders should be fortified in the main tower.” “Will the Odelians be here on time ? “ asked Elian “I think we’re on our own”

Kail began to walk towards the city gate. Liana ran after him. “I’m sorry I got you into this, I should have staid in the cell” “It’s not your fault, who knows what terrible things they could do to you” “Why do the Neferonians want to attack you ? I thought you all live in peace beyond the portal” “It’s not that simple. The Neferonians and the Odelians are in a war for a long time now. The Lumians tried to stay out of this war, we are aligned with the Neferonins. We pay them taxes and they don’t touch us and let us live in peace. As the war began more fierce the Neferonians raised their taxes and demanded our people for work in their mines and fortresses. The council decided that it was too much and we secretly forge an alliance with the Odelians and the Neferonian rebels” “To join with another empire, so that you pay them the same taxes all over again ?” “That’s how it works, we are too small to oppose the Neferonians alone. That’s why me and Elian went to the east, we delivered the agreement” “Why you ? Don’t you have ambassadors for that ?” “The city is watched by Neferonian spies. We couldn’t risk those plans being revealed so instead they sent us to the Odelians, nobody would suspect us.” “Is it true that your father is a councillor ?” “Yes, he is the high councillor, he oversees the city” “I don’t want to cause more trouble, you should go and I should take Lightwing and Twinkle and move on, it was nice to meet you.” “You too.”

Kail went back to Varus Gate. The road looked differently now, maybe because his mood changed from excitement to frustration and anger at himself. He managed in a couple of days not only blow up all of his plans but also blow up a city in the process. He wished he could go back in time and never go with them, to be alone and not to trouble anyone. He finally reached Varus Gate. He went to the house of Mr. Norle. The sun began slowly to go up in the sky. He knocked on the door and the old man opened it “Oh it’s you, I hope the trip was nice for you” Kail could see Twinkle sleeping on the far side of the room, he suddenly jumped up and flew towards Kail, chirping with excitement “Let’s go to visit your bigger friend”. Mr. Norle opened the barn door. Lightwing was sleeping there on a bunch of hay. He opened his eyes and closed to Kail. He snooped around him and then put his head on Kail “I missed you too guys” “They have quite a nice temper, the big guy eats a lot of fish but the small guy is just gold, I’ve got enough fish for him, myself and for selling some at the market.” Lightwing groaned with approval, burping out some white flames at the floor “I might have fed him too much, he almost burnt down the house” “Thank you for taking care of them” Kail took off the white robe and put the black tunic back on him.

Kail climbed on Lightwing and prepared to leave he looked at the rising sun, then looked the other way towards the city. He could see black dots floating in the sky “They must be the Neferonian airships ! Wish I could do anything for them” Mr. Norle looked up in the sky “This can’t be good, they tend to fight over small and insignificant things, but if those things caused such a mess they are not that insignificant after all” Kail looked at the ships. “Maybe I could do something for them, If I caused this mess I can get them out of it, every sword counts” he though. “Thank you again Mr. Norle “ Two light taps and the dragon was in the air. Twinkle jumped onto Kail’s shoulder and they were ready to go” “The sun is almost up we must hurry” he said and Lightwing began to fly towards the city. “I remember how my father told me about the dragon raiders, how they dived on the Garroks blowing them up with energy balls.” Lightwing burped some white flames again “That burping you have, try to make it bigger, get some more air in.” Lightwing filled his lungs with air. “Now the master said the energy comes from our souls and not our muscles or stomach, try to imagine it coming from your mouth, I trust you can” Lightwing gave a short groan, filled his lungs with air again and then sent it out of his mouth. In a loud, almost whistling roar the white energy ball flew out of the dragon’s mouth.

High councillor Tonle was standing on the main tower, looking at the closing airships “The bough the whole third fleet, if those ships close to our city they will turn it into burning ruins. We need to focus one ship at a time and we must not let them reach the city.” “I want to help father” said Elian “You already did enough, go down and don’t leave the safe zone.” “I want to fight !” “You are too young, go down”. The windhawks began to fly towards the closing fleet. “Those are not the light trading airships we are used to have here, they are almost twice their size, their balloons are covered in steel plating and the deck is filed with turrets and bombs. It won’t be easy”. Below him in an alcove stood Elian and Liana .They listened closely to the talk above them and watched closely at the closing fleet. “You think they will manage to stop them ? “ asked Liana “Do you want me to be optimistic or real ?” “You’re always pessimistic …” The first windhawks closed to an airship. The riders held something in their hands, they closed to the airships when fireballs and arrows began to fly at them. They tried to outmanoeuvre the incoming fire but it was too fierce, the windhawks turned back and went up for another run. This time they began to dive from above. The fire was not as fierce as it was below the airship. The windhawks closed to the airship and the riders attached the square things to the ship’s hull “Stick bombs, I guess they shouldn’t have left us those” said Elian. The windhawks flew away and the bombs went off. The carefully placed bombs detached the deck from the air balloon and the ship began to fall “get some !” said Elian “Quiet ! You want our father to hear us ? “. The windhwaks closed to another ship. This time the fire came from multiple ships. The windhawks barely managed to get high enough and began their dive. The riders attached the bombs and they went off. The deck almost fell off but one of the charges didn’t break the steel and the deck began to hag down chaotically from the air balloon , slowly descending to the ground. “here goes another one !”

“sir we lost two ships “ said one of the guards to the ambassador “Tighten the ships together, they cannot withstand our firepower” he said, holding his short pointy beard. “Soon enough we burn that place to hell and get that boy in our hands”. The windhawks closed to another airship. They tried to get up for a dive but the fire from the ships was too heavy and they backed off “Sir the fire is too heavy, our windhawks can’t reach the ships.” “signal them to retreat, we’ll send them in again when they close to the outer tower”. The ships began to close to the city. “Sir they are closing to the tower” “Signal them to shoot”. The guards in the outer tower began to fill the weapons. “They are closing to the outer tower, they will fire explosive bolts at them with their own ballistas “ said Elian “Ballistas ?” “Those big bows they have on Neferonian battleships, we bought a few of those three months ago” “I see you’re still digging in father’s office” “I need to know those things if I want to lead this place one day…” . “Sir the ships are in range !” “Signal them to fire”. The ballistas fired at the closest ship. The bolts hit the hull but the strong steel held the deck in place. The airship began to turn it’s flank towards the tower. The gunners hit the ship again with no results, the ship opened fire. The explosive bolts hit the tower. “They shoot the tower sir” “Keep firing !”. Meanwhile the windhawks prepared to dive on the ship again. The tower drew all of the fire and the hawks flew straight for the ship. The riders attached the charges and flew away. The charges went off and the ship fell apart. “Third down !”. The ships began to turn their flanks to the tower one by one and firing at it “They almost ran out of bolts and the ships are shooting the tower” “Signal them to fall back” said High councillor Tonle. The windhawks began their dive on another ship but the ships noticed them and began to fire. “The fire is too heavy there is no way we can stop them !” “Sir one of the ships is leaving formation and heading towards the city !” The high councillor ran towards the edge of the tower too see clearer the airship flying past the other ones towards the city “It’s loaded with bombs !” The windhawks flew towards the ship but the fire from the decks was too heavy, “They can’t dive on it !” They looked at the airship closing to the city helplessly. Suddenly the heard a whistling noise “Is that the bombs ? Where are they falling ? “ Elian looked at the ship when suddenly a large explosion happened on the deck. “Over there sir “ one of the guards pointed at a fast moving dot in the sky. “It’s Kail” they heard somewhere below them. Kail turned around and prepared to go for another run “Are you ready ? “ the dragon roared and prepared for the dive. Elian heard another whistling sound and another explosion appeared on the ship. The ship began to fall down. “It is smoking !” said Elian. “I’ve never seen such this much of a firepower in a single bird” said the high councillor. “Sir they just blew up another ship !” The ambassador looked closely at the dragon passing for another run “Shoot it down !”. Kail began to close to the ships when fireballs began to fly towards him from all directions Kail tried to pass between them. He quickly created a force shield in front of Lightwing. Lightwing created another energy ball and they flew away. The energy ball hit the ship deck and it began to smoke “We have fire on one of the ships !” “Shoot him !” . Lightwing flew higher above the ships where they couldn’t shoot him. “Let’s go for the tail now !” Lightwing dived at the ship below him. The fireballs began to fly at them again, Kail shielded Lightwing and he casted another energy ball. It hit the Tail of the ship. The ship lost control and began to turn left, crashing into another ship. “We’ve lost two more !” the ambassador looked at the remaining fleet “Turn the ships back, fall back ! This battle is not over.” The ships began to turn around. “You did it !” said Kail, Lightwing gave a short groan. Suddenly he began to fall down. Kail created a force field and tried to keep Lightwing afloat. They closed to the city and Lightwing crashed into the market district. Kail ran towards Lightwing. He was exhausted and barely moved his head. “You did well, you need to rest now”. Guards began to run towards the market district with high councillor Tonle, Liana and Elian.

Kail set down near the window looking at the city. He changed the cell for a comfortable room at the main tower. He heard a knocking on the door. Liana entered the room and set down near Kail “They said Lightwing will be alright. He is exhausted and needs time to recover but he wasn’t hurt during the fall”. High councillor Tonle was standing near the edge of the main tower, looking at the work in the market district. The outer tower was in a bad shape and needed repairs. “We won it father.” Said Elian closing to his father “Not just yet, the Neferonians will return in greater force once they have the ships to spare but by that time our alliance with the Odelians will be stronger and we will be ready. Today we celebrate , but tomorrow we prepare for war. “

Chapter 16 - The Sceptre
Spoiler:

Kail went up the watch tower. It was the same tower where he was kept captive and where the city watch barracks were. The spiral staircase finally came to an end and Kail walked into a tall hall. The hall was divided into levels with a big empty space in the middle. The bottom floor where Kail stood was filled with arcs leading to the outside world. A Windhawk flew through one of the arcs and went up through the middle. The higher floors were the Windhawk cages. Kai went up another staircase a few levels up. Lightwing was sleeping on one of the ledges. The Windhawks clearly annoyed by his presence set in the corners as far as possible from the unknown beast. One brave Windhawk closed to examine the dragon. As soon as he began to walk towards Lightwing he opened his eyes and gave a look at the Windhawk. The terrified bird ran away. Suddenly he stood up and gave a happy roar as he saw Kail closing towards him. The birds who were already terrified by his presence began to pile up in a corner on the other side of the level. “How do you feel friend ?” he asked and petted his neck. Lightwing was still in bad shape after the battle and it would take some time before he will be able to fly again. “I shouldn’t have forced you to do all of that” he said. “I wonder how did you do those energy balls. It will take you time to recover so I can use this time to figure it out”. He set down with Lightwing for a while and then went out.

The sun was still rising in the sky and the city was just waking up. Kail went back to the main tower. He probably took the longest route possible. The city was a real maze with the small walkways, alcoves and staircases but luckily the tower was visible from almost any place outside. He didn’t practice void magic for a long time now so he began to search for an empty place to practice. He went around the edge of the plaza looking down on the city. There were quiet gardens and squares below him. He didn’t bother to find a route down and just dashed over the wall to a small grass garden. A street went through it’s edge but it seemed to be empty.

“Lightwing was creating nice energy balls back there, I think I can replicate them” he thought. Lightwing took a deep breath before casting but the master said our power doesn’t come from our bodies. Kail was confused but decided to replicate the same moves and see what happens. Kail began to breathe deeply. What should he do now ? He didn’t know. He kept breathing deeply, set down and began to think. The look from the garden was quite nice. Kail could see the big towers and the small people on the walkways, hurrying somewhere ... The air was quite fresh so high on the mountain. Kail felt amazingly calm. Suddenly he understood. He was breathing to effect his soul and not his body, to calm and focus. He stood up. It all begins with a float of energy, but not a force field, he want to use the energy itself. He began to take air in, trying to guide the energy through his body. Suddenly a glowing white ball appeared between his hands, expanding as his lungs were expending, then he let the air out in a single burst and pushed the ball away. The energy ball flew away into the air. “I get it !” he jumped up. He heard a cheerful chirping behind him. “Twinkle how the hell did you find me? I thought you were sleeping” twinkle did a circle around Kail and set down on his shoulder. “Oh right you have that energy vision, you see life essences. Maybe I should learn a bit from you too”. Suddenly he flew away out of the garden “Where are you going ? “ Kail ran after him. The street was a walkway near the wall. Twinkle finally stopped near one of the planters and dived into it. “A strawberry bush of course …” he nodded and set down on the edge on the walkway.

Below him was a square. The green planters surrounded the stone floor. In the middle he could see an interesting sight. He saw two persons in the middle of the square. He recognized one – It was Liana while the other one was a robed old man. He held a large sceptre in his hands. The sceptre was quite decorated with ivory and gold. On the top he could see two golden wings. The old man watched as Liana casted air magic all around her. Step by step the repeated the memorized and practiced moves with amazing accuracy. She threw small whirlwinds and air streams with temper, almost furiously. “Faster , more accuracy !” the man shouted. “I guess it’s her master, don’t you think Twinkle ?” Twinkle was too busy eating the strawberries. “More strength !” Liana increased the speed of her moves, each strike became more powerful. She stroke again and again trying to make each strike faster and faster. Suddenly the master stopped her “Enough. Have a look at your moves, how awkward they are. You strike again and again but nothing is left from the strike, empty. Your hands are not in the right position, your body moves slowly. How many times should we repeat this again ? Is that all what you have ? You disgrace the holy art of air magic. It is enough for today.” The master turned around and went away leaving Liana standing there. She kept standing there until the master left, Kail couldn’t see any emotions on her face. Suddenly she turned around and began to walk and then run. Kail jumped down to the square and went after her.

He went into a walkway near the square. Liana was sitting on the edge, he could hear her cry. He closed to Liana “Are you alright ?”. Liana turned around surprised “What are you doing here ?” She quickly wiped her tears “I just went by and … I saw you going here and …” “I’m alright” she said and smiled to him, trying to hide the tears. “It’s fine”. He set down near her “What’s the problem ? “ “I … I just can’t reach my master’s expectations ... that’s it, it’s not a big deal” tears began to appear in her eyes again. “I think you did quite well there” “Really ? You just say it so I feel better right …” “No really, I don’t understand in it but it looked very good” “I wish it was true but … nevermind” she stood up “we should go for lunch”.

==>

Kail was invited for the first time for a meal with the high councillor’s family. They lived in one of the towers near the main one. The house wasn’t as large as Kail would expect from a family with such high position but it was bigger than the average house. The entrance door led to a big open room. The walls were covered with tapestry and shelves with books and dishes stood by them. There was a burning fireplace in the corner of the room and a big table in the middle. The dishes for the lunch were on the table but the food was not yet brought. Kail was warmly welcomed by the high councillor and invited to the table. He set in the front of the table with his wife to his right. The place to his right remained empty and Elian took the seat next to it while Liana set in front of him on the left. Kail set in the end of the table as the guest. Finally he heard a knocking on the door “I apologize for being late” Kail turned around to see the same old man – Liana’s master. He went to the table and set down near the councillor .

The councillor called for their servant to bring the food. The food brought to the table looked quite elegant and varied yet was served in simple dishes. Although they seemed to be silver they weren’t like the fancy dishes used by richer Alderian families. “So what is your name traveller ?” asked the councillor “Kail, Kail son of Mark of the … Sceptii family” he answered, taking out the “great” before the family name, there was not much to the Sceptii family. “Where are you from, Kail son of Mark ?”. Kail felt a bit uncomfortable . He tried to show good manners and be as polite as possible. “From the forests of Alderon” “Alderon … it is an odd name, where is it … Alderon ?” “Beyond the great portal to those lands” he carefully answered. He looked at the food on the table. He wanted to try it out yet was afraid to show bad manners. On the other hand he might offend the councillor by not eating his food. He carefully began to fill his plate with a bit from each bowl. The councillor looked at him closely as if he was some sort of an exotic creature. “Is that your dragon ?” asked the councillor “Yes, his name is Lightwing” Kail carefully answered. He looked at the others sitting around and tried to eat similarly. He knew how to wield a fork but when there are four of them it’s hard to use them properly.

The Councillor kept looking at Kail “You returned back to this city even though there is nothing in common between you and us. That is an admirable deed. I would like to give you a proposal. We are now in a state of open war with the Neferonians and we need all help we can get. Maybe that is why we are not so different after all. Join us – Remain here with me to protect this city” Kail felt uncomfortable with the Councillor’s suggestion “Unfortunately I have my own mission ahead of me …” but the councillor wasn’t listening “Actually with you in our forces we could do much more than just protecting this city, you inspire troops, threaten enemies and can take on so many airships alone, together with the Lumain flight groups you can open us a way for a quick strike right at the heart of the enemy.” “No sir I won’t be able to help you” the councillor noticed the refusal. “Let me explain you something… We are about to enter a war with a big enemy – the Neferonians. If we cannot make a quick push we will be forced to fight a long war against them, just like the Odelians , the war we tried to escape for so long until I had enough of it. We will loose many people and you can help us end it all !” “I can’t sir , I’m just a single rider, Lightwing barely survived the last encounter, I can’t just force him through it again and besides I have a mission and I can’t loose time” the councillor set quietly, thinking. “Is there anything I can do to change your mind ?” “I don’t think so” “And what if we help you with that mission ? “. Kail looked surprised at the councillor “I’m not sure you can …” “think about it” he said.

The food was cleared from the table and Kail was ready to go. He looked again at the old man sitting next to the councillor. He stood up and went towards the door. Elian accompanied him to the door. “Who is the old man next to your father ?” “Oh it’s our grandfather, he is the great airmaster of the city.” Answered Elian as he opened the door.

==>

Kail entered his room in the main tower and set down on the bed. He should probably start to plan his trip while Lightwing recovers. For some reason he felt quite tired. He laid down on the bed, his eyes slowly closed and he fell asleep. A cold wind blew around him. Kail stood in a middle of a large hall with old cracked walls covered in unknown glyphs. In the middle of the room he saw a large light. He closed to the light. It gave out a warm, calming aura. Suddenly he heard a voice. It sounded familiar but he couldn’t recognize it. The voice whispered something but Kail couldn’t understand it. “What was it saying ? “ he looked at the light “Why can’t I understand what it said ?” “Know it’s ways” the light answered. The cold wind began to blow again around Kail and the room around him disappeared. Suddenly he woke up, holding the shard in his hand. The shard was slightly glowing. The glow disappeared and Kail looked around. It was evening outside.

Kail decided to go out. The fresh air will surely help him think. Twinkle was sleeping on the chair near Kail’s bed “Hope you have some good dreams”. He went back to the square he was at in the morning. The moonlight lit the stone floor in the middle of the square. When Kail closed to the square he noticed a person in the middle of it. Liana was standing there , in the middle of the square. She began to cast air magic. Her strikes seemed fast and powerful yet shaking. She seemed exited and restless. “I’ll pass it” she whispered to herself and began to strike again. The strikes became even faster “Eeerf why can’t I do it !!” she furiously set down. She turned back to see Kail standing behind her “It’s you …” “What are you doing here ?” he asked “Practicing my magic” she answered. “I don’t know much in air magic, but maybe you should clear your mind and do something else”. She looked at him for a bit then replied “I can’t, I don’t have time” “Are you in a hurry ?” “Yes, I must pass the challenge in the temple of air to get my air sceptre” “Your air sceptre ?” “It’s an artefact crafted for every air mage personally, it’s part of every air mage and I must get my own sceptre in order to become an air mage” “Is that the sceptre that your master is holding ?” “Yes, this is his air sceptre” “And when should you do the challenge ?” “Whenever I want” “and what happens if you fail ?” “I try again until I pass it” “So you have all the time you need” “No, I’m already late, air mages of my age should already get their sceptres …” “A few hours won’t change that, you should really calm down”. Liana looked at Kail then answered “Maybe you’re right”.

==>

They set down on the edge of the square. “So what are you supposed to do on the challenge ?” “I should bring one of the Windcatcher flowers in the temple to my master” “Is that it? “ “It’s not as easy as it sounds, you can see for yourself”. She stood on her fit and went through the square. Kail quickly followed after her. The street bended around the plaza above them and soon lead them to the other side of the city. From there Kail could see the third tower above the city. They passed a few streets, going through alcoves an bridges until they reached a large bridge leading to the third tower. “The temple of air is in that tower” she said and they went in. In front of them were large wooden doors with two large silver Windhawks who open their wings above the doors as if protecting them. They didn’t enter the closed door but instead went down a staircase in the marble floor. The staircase lead to another set of doors similar to the ones above. The doors lead to a large hall. It was a perfect marble sphere. In the middle of the sphere he could see a glowing object casting shadow on the hall. It was a plant with white flowers, surrounding a glowing crystalline rock. The plant gently floated right in the center of the sphere. “Is this the Windcatcher ?” “Yes, try to enter the room” Kail went forward towards the door. The spherical floor below him looked fine, he tried to slide down the wall. The second he passed the doorway he felt as a powerful wind pushes him out. Maybe foolishly he tried to use his whole weight to break through the wind but the wind pushed back even harder and threw him back through the doorway for Liana’s amusement. “Ouch” he replied as Liana was laughing at him slightly “Told you it’s not so easy”

“So how are you supposed to get in ?” asked Kail “I don’t know, this is part of the challenge. The wind inside the sphere blows all the time though it’s hard to hear it. I tried to push my way through it with my air magic many times but I always failed. I’m probably not strong enough yet, I need to be a more powerful mage” Kail looked at the room “for me it looks more like a puzzle, if something doesn’t work here it’s because it shouldn’t work here. Those sorts of things test your understanding of magic, like Aladarn’s trial, what are the basics of air magic, where does it come from ,and what is it ?”

Liana set down near the door. “Air magic … Air mages command the air around them, moving it , turning it into wind. There is a lot of things you need in order to do air magic, you need to feel it, change with it, swiftly move it, be it in some way… this is complicated” she looked with frustration on the spherical hall. “We should both catch a sleep” said Kail “Maybe …” she stood up and they went out of the temple.

Kail entered his room, Twinkle was sleeping on a chair. He slightly open his eye to see who came in and went back to sleep “Sleeping and eating all day eh Twinkle ?”. The warm bed invited to sleep and Kail soon fell asleep. The warm bed changed into a cold wind passing through the room, the same one he stood in before. The light kept glowing in the middle if the room. He could see the room more clearly now. Above the circular cracked walls he could see small arches that let the cold air in. The ceiling was supported by columns coming out of the walls , covering the room in a cone from the outside world. The floor was covered in a mosaic with faint colors. The tops of the columns were shaped like hawks with wings supporting the ceiling. “What is this room ? Why do I see it ?” Kail began to close to the glow in the middle of the room. It came from a pedestal in the middle of the room. He began to slowly close to the pedestal. He began to feel heat over his body. Covered in sweat he kept walking. Each step was harder and harder, it was hard to breathe and his body shook badly. The heat became unbearable and he began to choke. “I don’t want to be here ! Let me go !” he screamed. Suddenly the room faded away. He woke up in his bad. He was covered in hot sweat. The shard was slightly glowing in his hand. The glow began to fade and the room became dark again.

==>

The following morning he went back to the garden where Liana was practising. She was there again with the same old man. “Faster, more power ! Steady, I said steadier !” Liana was moving the wind around her in all directions, throwing it, blowing it, faster and harder with each strike. “Stop” he commanded “You are not feeling it, you can’t even keep up with the most basic moves ! Go to the basic stance and stop disappointing me.”. She began to cast magic again, her body shook and her moves were not steady. “Faster !” the master commanded but she couldn’t go any faster. She fell to the ground on her knees “Stand up, what are you? A crying baby ?! “. She couldn’t listen anymore and ran away from the garden “Eh stupid girl !” said the master “Why can’t you make me happy even once …” he sat down on a stone bench.
Kail closed to him “Good day sir” “Can I help you with something ?” “I … just saw your lesson with Liana and … I wanted to ask you why do you talk so harshly to her”. The old man looked at Kail then replied “Because this world is not a dolly house, if she wants to learn something she needs to be better, all the time !” “Haven’t you thought of , maybe taking another approach, encouraging her more ? “ “Listen boy … I was teaching for long enough to know there is no other approach. Discipline is one of the keys to success and no other approach is going to change that.” “Maybe she can’t do it ?” “Can’t ?! She doesn’t want to ...” “It’s not true !” “It is, your words cannot change it”. Kail left the master alone and went to follow Liana.

Liana was sitting on the edge of a small terrace. She was looking at the city, with a sad look. Kail set down near her. “Hey” he said and gave a smile at her “hey” she replied faking a quick smile “I saw you at the square, just came by to cheer you up” “Thanks” she said. “Why did you run away ?” “I … I don’t know what to say … I just felt I disgraced every value I was taught …”. The shadow of the master set motionlessly on the ledge above them “ The obedience, the respect towards the art of air magic … it all crumbles apart in my hands. My master … my grandfather hates me, I don’t stand up to his expectations , I just can’t do it. I just don’t want to do air magic anymore”. Was the master right after all ? Kail thought to himself ... “I talked with your grandfather and I just thought I should let you know he doesn’t hate you. He is just being harsh when he trains you. He said that all you need to do is to want to do it. Believe in what you do and don’t let anything turn you away, just believe.” Said Kail. Liana stood on her feet “All I need to do is to want to do it ? I don’t know … But I want to make my grandfather proud !” She ran back towards the square.

The master was still sitting on the bench. “Master, I beg your pardon for running away “ said Liana. The master looked at her then replied “It’s alright, stand up we have a lesson at hand”. He went to the middle of the square “Basic stance, steady legs straight body. Tunnel the air around you” Liana began to turn the air around her. Kail could feel the air blowing away from her “Forward, short streams one by one !” the master commanded. Liana began to send waves of air forward “Faster, more power !” He shouted. Liana put up pressure on the air and the waves became faster. “Good … Stronger moves, more accuracy !” he commanded. Liana kept casting magic, she gave all she could. “Don’t go against the wind, go with it your way !” Liana kept casting more and more. Her hands began to shake again, she felt tired. “Alright you did enough” said her master but she kept going. He closed to her and caught her hand “Enough for today, you are exhausted and can’t go on.” He dropped her hand and went out of the square “It is early for you to enter the chamber yet, you will need to practice more”

==>

“So how do you feel ? “ asked Kail “Tired” Liana replied and set down on the bench “but good. I’m just wondering how those things would help me to the flowers” “Maybe you just need a curtain level of knowledge to enter the chamber” said Kail. “The master said I’m not ready to enter the chamber but I feel I can, I must do it, just how ?” “You’ll figure it out, there is no need to rush it. The master said you’re not ready after all so I don’t think you should try to do this for now” “maybe … we should go for lunch“ she said.

Kail went to walk outside after lunch. The Lumians knew how to enjoy their life. The food was good and felt quite different and varied, brought by the trading caravans from lands far away. The streets were quiet and opened a stunning view on the city with many plazas, gardens and terraces. He kept walking until he reached the same garden where Liana used to practice. She stood there motionlessly, her eyes were closed and she breathed deeply. Kail closed to her “What are you doing ?” “thinking” she replied “The master said that I shouldn’t go against the wind and go with it my way, what does this mean ? If I can’t go against the wind I can’t go the way I want …” “Yes but what are you doing right now ?” “The master always said that your breath is the key for air magic.”. Kail thought about what Liana’s master said. “It’s only possible if the wind blows the way you want to go”. “I know what !” said Liana “He meant that I should make the wind go my way! That is what it means to be an air mage, but how can I do it ? Wait, you know what ? He didn’t mean just blowing air forward, he means literally moving the air around me ! How did I never think about it ?!”. She began to breathe deeper “Just like the air at my fingertips , move the air around me …”. The air began to form around her body. With each breath it tightened around her body. She rose her hands slowly, trying to feel the air around her. Her body began to rise with her hands ad her legs left the ground. She was floating above the ground “I … I did it !” she slowly returned herself to the ground. “It makes me feel a little tired, I should rest for a bit. I knew how to do so all time along but why never I tried to do this ? It’s amazing, now I’m ready to go to thechamber” “You know you shouldn’t ! The master said you’re not ready yet !” said Kail “It’s the only way I can impress my master” “You don’t need to ! He will be proud of you anyway.” But Liana wasn’t listening, she was eager to enter the temple.

They went down the staircase to the hall. The Windcatcher was still floating in the middle of the room surrounding the glowing stone. Liana closed to doorstep. She entered her hand into the stream. The air went around her hand as if it was water. She took a deep breath and dived into the chamber. The air hit her and began to push her out but she began to move it around her body, floating slowly towards the flower. Her body began to shake as the air blew hard at her. The closer she got to the flower the harder she was pushed back. Just a little more … she only had to reach one white flower and catch it. The hand closed to the flower. She exhausted and barely could keep up with the pressure. She caught the flower with the tips of her fingers when she ran out of power and the air pulled her backwards towards the wall. Liana pulled the last of her powers to slow herself and reach the door. The air pushed her quickly out of the room, she landed slowly on the floor then fell to the ground “I did it” “You did it indeed” Kail turned around to see the master standing behind them “Master … I …” “You made me proud. Not because of the flower but because you understood the key to air magic alone, that and because you’re my grandchild” he smiled “Let the work on the sceptre begin.”

==>

Liana stood at the workshop of the sceptre-master. The old man wore a white robe and held a large sceptre of his own. “The making of a sceptre begins with the material. There are many sorts of materials suitable for the sceptre, all give it different properties. It is up to you to choose the right material, choose carefully. Although your sceptre will be simple at first it will be this sceptre that will serve you all your life and symbolize your status as an air mage”. Liana examined the shelf with raw rods. She looked at each one of them but couldn’t find the one she wanted until her sight fell on a piece if raw wood lying in the side of the room. “What is this ?” the sceptre-master picked up the wood “It’s a Silverwood. I never made a sceptre out of it. It is a very rare type of wood. It bends well yet it’s strong and sturdy. Apart from that I do not know any of it’s magical properties and how well it goes with air magic.” “I want this one” said Liana “Are you sure ?” “Yes, I think so” “Than so be it.”. The sceptre master took the raw piece of wood and began to work on it. He carefully made a rod out of it and began to work on the sceptre itself. The simple rod began to take shape. The polished wood took a slightly silver color. The sceptre-master added a bronze relief spiralling across the sceptre and carved out patterns along it. The sceptre-master completed the sceptre and handed it to Liana “May this sceptre serve you well, it is the gift to those who know the art of air magic” “Your training is not done yet though” said the master “You need to learn how to use the sceptre to improve your magic, and I would also like to thank you young man for helping us” .

“So what are you going to do now? “ asked Kail “I need to learn how to use it first” said Liana “and use what I learned so far. It’s a bit different now, after I got the flower, thank you again for helping me get so far” “I was glad to help” he replied “And what are you going to do when Lightwing is going to recover ?” “I don’t know yet, but one thing is sure – I’m going to find the shards”

The end of sixteenth chapter.
Chapter 17 – The chase
Spoiler:

The first rays of the dawn lit the city of Highwind, awakening those who still slept in their warm beds. Kail went down from the guardian tower. Lightwing began to feel better after the fight and Kail will probably leave soon. In the meantime he could spend some time in the streets of Highwind, thinking about the journey ahead. His thoughts drifted to the dreams he had recently. He went to the training yard to see how Liana does with her new sceptre. Liana was standing in the middle of the square, practicing , when she noticed Kail “Hey, come to see some new tricks that I’ve learned” she said and quickly went into the air as lightly as a feather. “Oh yea …” said Kail “something is wrong ?” she asked and quickly landed near Kail “No , I’m just bothered with some … dreams, visions I had ever since I came to the city” “What visions ?” “It’s a dark room, covered in glyphs, old room. In the middle of it I could see a glow, but never quite what it was, then it all becomes dark again, my body shakes and boils, I stop breathing, all I want is to leave that room, leave that dream, and then I awake in my bed, with the shard glowing in my hand” “You never quite told us what is that stone and what are you doing here” “Well, it is an old artefact created by our ancestors a long time ago. This shard is part of it and I need to collect all parts of the shard. “ “Yes but why ? “ “I … I don’t know, I only know the words my master said when he gave me the task … why couldn’t he be clearer and make it all so complicated …” “Maybe you should go to Crazy Enira, I heard she knows how to read dreams” “Where does she live ?” “On a mountain to the west of Highwind” “Maybe I should, we will see once Lightwing recovers”

==>

The morning rays of light lit a large map on the table in the middle of the room. The door opened and Elian entered the room “You called me father ?” “Yes, sit down” said the high councillor. “I just received a letter from the high Lumian council . They … are not convinced we can win this war, even with the help of the Odelians. I’ve told them that we can win but they won’t listen. The vote currently stands on 6 to 6 . High councillor Elniron believes we should surrender while I say we should fight. If we won’t convince the council that we can win the Neferonians will come and destroy our homes. “ “Yes father, but how can I help ?” “I need Kail, I need him and his dragon and his magic. He could singlehandedly destroy 4 Neferonian battleships, moreover he inspires and boosts morale, he is the trading card we need to convince the council. I need you to bring him to us, convince him to help us. Go with him and help him out, then bring him to the council as soon as possible, I trust you will do this to the letter. The Neferonians are assembling and as soon as they have enough resources left over from the battle with the Odelians they will bring their whole might on us. By the last sunset of the summer he must be at the council, at any cost”

“Are you leaving tomorrow ?” asked Liana “I guess so, Lightwing feels much better and he can fly already. He is not fully recovered but I should get going as soon as possible” “Wish I could come with you, to see the world and go to a big adventure like that. My brother and father won’t let me go, they will stand there and complain how young I am and how dangerous it is and how we should take care of home and Highwind instead of going to who knows where … oh here he is. You’re not going to let me go with Kail right Elian ?” Elian looked confused at Liana “To go where ?” “To his adventures around the world !” “Oh are you going already ?” “Tomorrow I think “ said Kail “Alright I’m packing and meeting you tomorrow, maybe you also want to tell you’re going to our father”. Liana looked shocked at Elian “You … didn’t say that, did you ?” “What ? Are you waiting till I change my mind ? Go pack your things.”

==>

Kail entered his room. The few things he brought with him were already packed in his bag. “Today is our last night in Highwind, did you like the city Twinkle ?” Twinkle chirped with acknowledgment “It’s a quiet and beautiful place” he set down on the bed. Although he was tired Kail couldn’t fall asleep. He took off the shard and put it on the table near the bed. He was afraid of those dreams he had. He didn’t want to see or feel them again. Eventually the body claimed what it needed and Kail fell asleep. The night passed quietly and Kail could rest before his journey continues.

The following morning Kail cleaned the room after himself and took his bag “let’s go Twinkle”. On the top of the guardian tower Elian and Liana were already waiting for Kail together with the high councillor. “We .. took the liberty of equipping your dragon with a saddle” said the high councillor and called the keepers to bring the dragon. Lightwing was rested and looked much better after his time in the Windhawk cages. The saddle was more of a large platform covered in hide with bags hanging off it. It was rather large but set well on Lightwing. “The bags are filled with food for your journey. Here is some money for your way too” the High Councillor took out a purse with golden coins in it. Kail went up on Lightwing. “Liana , take care of yourself” said the high councillor “Are you ready ?” asked Kail. Liana climbed up om the back of the dragon “And you Elian, you know what to do… and take care of Liana” “are you coming ?” said Liana. Elian began to climb the dragon “Thank you sir” said Kail “May the spirits of this world guide you” said the councillor as Lightwing took off the ground. He then watched how the dragon went higher and higher, disappearing in the horizon.

==>

“So where is that Crazy Enira ?” asked Kail “She lives to the West, with Lightwing we’ll be there in no time” answered Liana. They kept flying for an hour. “Sir we can see them again !” “Give me the scope” said prince Telion pushing the scout aside. “Eh Kail ? we got trouble and it’s closing fast !” said Elian as the dark star appeared behind them. “I thought you blew it up” said Liana “Hey, seems like they fixed it” Elian pointed at a large area to the side of the ship, awkwardly covered in steel plates. “We see him again !” “Give me the scope” the ambassador pushed the scout aside “Yes it seems like the ship of our prince”. “C’mon Lightwing we need to get out of here” said Kail. “He’s escaping ! I can’t afford loosing him !” shouted the prince “More power to the core !”. “They are escaping ! I can’t afford loosing them !” shouted the ambassador “More power to the engines !” “Can you afford loosing another ship ? Our engines are at the limit” said the captain. The ambassador stopped to think for a second “You are right, we can’t catch them at this rate but sooner or later they will come to us, slow us down”. “They are slowing “ noted one of the scouts “Why are they doing it ? “ asked prince Telion “Because their ship is not as fast as ours or the dragon, he does however has the advantage in numbers and connections. He will know where we are from his men on the ground at any time and instead of going straight for us he will go around, waiting for us to come to him” the master replied “Humm, the small dragon will be able to pass through undetected but the large star will attract attention and give him information of the dragon’s location … Helm, bring us down, we will continue to fly at night, keep an eye on the dragon’s heading”. “The dark star, it’s slowing down” said Liana “why ?” “I don’t know, but it was close. From now on we will fly only at nights, so that they won’t see us” said Elian.

Kail began to scan the ground for a place to land. He noted a road below him and began to descend towards it. Within a few flaps the dragon was on the ground. “So are we going to sleep at days ?” asked Kail “We better split the night in two we will fly in the evening and for the night we’ll land to sleep, in the morning we’ll keep walking” said Elian. They began to walk by the road to the west.

==>

The dark star slowly landed on the ground. The peak of the lower spire lowered until it touched the ground. Four large chains were shot out of the sides of the ship anchoring it to the ground. “Ah we can actually enjoy the local wild life” noted the master “You can’t focus on anything” noted prince Telion “I will take a tour around, do you want to come with me ?” “No” “And if we’ll use this opportunity to scout the immediate area and maybe locate the dragon while enjoying the wild life ?” “Alright alright . Also deploy scouts in the area, be in the lookout of the dragon and the ambassador’s ship” they went into the transport chamber. They stepped in the platform and in a puff of black smoke reappeared below the ship. They kept walking forward “It’s quite different from home isn’t ?” noted the master. Prince Telion was walking forward with no interest toward the flora. “Over there, it’s a road” said Prince Telion as they approached the simple mud path “If I was those travellers I would take the road to ease up my travel” said the master. “You’re right, I bet we’ll find them ahead”.

Kail kept walking the mud road “Can I ask you something?” he turned towards Liana “Why did you come along with me ?” “I lived all my life in Highwind almost never leaving the city. I want to see the world, what lies behind the walls in those valleys I saw each day I went to sleep out of my window” “and you Elian ?”. Elian thought about his answer for a bit “Someone has to take care of Liana” “Take care of me ? You can’t take care of yourself !” “Yes I can !” “You don’t even know how to cook !” “I don’t need to know it’s something girls should know, I should know how to fight and command and protect you” Liana casted some wind in his direction “Aww !” Elian complained as the stream hit his face “I can take care of myself” she added.

==>

The sun slowly began to set down, disappearing in the tree-line in front of them. “Should we stop for a dinner ? “ asked Kail. Suddenly Twinkle jumped off his shoulder and began to fly around chirping nervously “What’s wrong Twinkle ?” asked Kail. They turned around to see the men in dark armor running towards them. Liana swung her sceptre to send an air blast towards the enemies. Prince Telion pushed one of the guards aside “You’re mine” . He charged forward and cast a black stream at Kail. He blocked with a force shield and prepared to cast an attack of his own. Suddenly Lightwing landed between them with a terrifying roar and flapped his wings to crate a massive force wave and push the intruders aside. “Get on the dragon !” Shouted Elian. They quickly climbed up and Lightwing took off. Prince Telion stood up on his feet, cleaning away the dust as the large shadow of the dark star appeared above him. In black cloud puff he appeared on the transport deck. “Go after them”.

Lightwing began to fly quickly towards the sun that almost disappeared in the horizon. “So dinner cancels …” said Elian looking back at the dark star rising from the ground. “Get us in the range of the dragon and fry it to hell !” commanded prince Telion “Stabilize the ship, get us higher” ordered the captain “Casters prepare”. “Kail behind us !” shouted Liana as the smaller spires of the dark star began to glow. The captain was carefully following the dragon “Shoot on my mark , FIRE !”. A dark stream of energy left the tips of the spires “Hold tight !” shouted Kail and the dragon began to dive. “FIRE !” ordered the captain again . The streams flew at Kail again, missing by only few feet. One of the streams hit a large tree that went up in flames right in front of them. Lightwing quickly dodged to the left. Another dark stream left the tips of the spires , passing in a screech by the dragon. “Hold on tight !” shouted Kail “We are already holding tight !” shouted Elian. Lightwing closed his wings, pressing them against the body and they began to fall. Kail concentrated all his energy in a large force field around Lightwing to help him in his. “Kail he won’t pass here !” shouted Liana. Lightwing began to manoeuvre in between the trees, keeping on the fly only with the force field. Kail’s hands shook s he tried to hold the massive creature in air. Lightwing passed like a rocket between the trees, almost hitting them on the way through. Elian looked down at the closing ground below them “We are going to crash !”. Lightwing got lower and lower, slightly touching the ground with his legs. Kail’s body shook crazily as his cloths were wet of sweat. Suddenly an open valley opened in front of them. Lightwing opened his wings and gave a powerful flap, sending them into the air again. “We did it !” shouted Liana “yea … barely . We are off for a good start …” added Elian.

“They disappeared in the forest” the captain reported to the prince, preparing to accept his anger “They disappeared, you gonna find them, every single one of them and bring them to me” said the prince. “Maybe we should slow down for a bit and lower the ship, we have already attracted too much attention” said the master. Telion was angry but knew he has no choice.

==>

Lightwing kept flying until they reached the forest on the other side of the valley. They prepared a simple camp. There was no time to gather food so they are what the brought with them . Kail was too tired to talk. He entered his bedroll, thinking of the journey ahead. He fell asleep almost instantly. Liana was quick to follow him. Only Elian remained sitting near the fire, thinking about the men in dark armor. He covered the remains of the flame, entered his bedroll and went to sleep.

Chapter 18 – Welcome to the In-Between Lands
Spoiler:

The light flickered on the walls of the cave. “… If you mistake us for head-hunters you better look elsewhere.” “You are running this area aren’t you ?” said the Neferonian ambassador “yes, we are …” “and so you know where everyone is. If you find them and bring them to me this will be your reward” one of the guards closed to them and opened a chest full of gold. “And what prevents me from just … taking it from you ?” asked the second man. Suddenly all guards and men in the cave drew their weapons “The fact there is a battleship hovering above your head. Bring them to me and I will reward you, but more importantly I will keep your location a secret”

Kail woke up first in the morning. Liana and Elian were still sleeping near Lightwing and Twinkle was sitting on him, chirping quietly, probably dreaming about some exotic fruits and berries. He set down on the grass and created a force field between his hands, absorbing the silence around him, looking at the rising sun.

“Well we are not dead so far so we can call this a good morning …” said Elian as he woke up. “Why can’t you stop whining for a day ?” said Liana as she rolled her sleeping bag “I’m not whining ! I just said we are alive that’s it !” “Anyway good morning Kail”. Kail was still sitting on the grass “Uh ? oh … yea good morning”. Elian was quickly folding his stuff “If we want to remain alive we better keep going”

The muddy road leading west was relatively straight. It kept going into the deeps of the lush forests ahead. “Are we in Neferon ?” wondered Kail “Of course not, we are Between Lumian, Odelian and Neferon which lies far to the west” answered Elian “So where are we ?” “In the In-Between Lands” “In-Between Lands ?” “Yes, they call themselves the land of free people but currently they are just part of the Neferonian Empire. It’s not a safe place to be in either. The roads and forests are filled with bandits and outlaws who escaped from all corners of the world.” “So there are bandits on this road ?” “Now that you say it this way I don’t know if we want to face them on the road or the crazy prince in the air …”

==>

The road slowly lead them west until they could see a village ahead. “We could by provisions there” said Elian “Wouldn’t there be Neferonian soldiers ?” “I don’t think so, usually they don’t care about the local villages , we can hide the dragon for good measure”. Lightwing surely didn’t like the idea of being apart from Kail “Don’t worry fellow we will be back soon, you and Twinkle should stay here” said Kail. Lightwing answered with a sad groan but remained sitting.

The Village was medium in size nor had anything unusual in it. The main square offered some merchants with provisions. “What brings you travellers to Greenwatch ?” asked the merchant “We’d like to buy some provisions” answered Kail “Yes I have some food on sale for you”. Liana stepped in asking all sorts of food from the merchant, from meat to vegetables, herbs and spices, what they needed and probably not, all quickly flowing into the bags which couldn’t take more food. “We just left Highwind !” complained Elian “You don’t know the next time we enter a settlement …” she answered “Yes I do ! I have a map on me !” she didn’t listen.

They were ready to pack the food and leave the village when suddenly they heard horses closing to the village. The villagers began to spread and hide. “What’s going on ?” they asked the merchant who was hiding behind the stall “hide, get down, you don’t want them to see you !” “Who ?” they crouched under the stall. The horses entered the village. On the horses set 12 men armed to the teeth with swords, axes and spears, “bandits !” whispered Elian. One of the men on the horses began to call in a loud voice “Where are you Old Radrich ?”. An old looking man appeared in their sight. He walked slowly towards the bandits with a small box in his hands “It’s time for your monthly payment, it’s not an easy task to protect you from harm and it becomes hard to resist the temptation !” the riding man added with laughter “Here , that is all money we have, now leave us alone !”. The man on the horse opened the box and looked inside “This ?! It’s barely enough to keep us from burning this square !” “You won’t find more money in the whole village now go away !” “really ? And if I search harder ?” the man closed to Old Radrich pointing his sword at his throat. Liana was ready to jump out of the stall but Elian held her tight “Let me go !”. “I feel generous today so I will trust your word but next month you better bring more” the men on the horses turned back and ran out of the village.

==>

The villagers slowly went back to their duties. Liana ran out towards the old man “wait !” shouted Elian “she is going to get us in trouble …”. “excuse me sir ?” the old man looked at Liama “yes young lady, you are not a local aren’t you ?” “Who were those people ?” she quickly asked “Bandits, this part of the forest is ran by them.” “Where are they hiding ?” the old man looked at her again, now with troubled expression “Why would you like to know ?” “I want to have a talk with that bastard !” .Kail and Elian closed to them “Liana snip out of it, there is nothing we can do in here” “We can’t just leave them like that !” “Yes we can …” answered Elian. Liana gave him a furious look “oh no no no no no, not this again …” said Elian “What this ? “ asked Kail “yes what this ?!” said Liana to which Elian preferred not to answer until she turned back to the old man “That fire in her eyes, she’s not going to leave it until she gets it done …”

“Where is that camp ?” she asked the old man again “I wouldn’t tell you even if I knew. This is not a place for you. You should pass this village and move on” “What is his name ? That bandit’s name ?” “His name is Estirnach and that is all I know about him” “thank you” she turned away and went back to Kail and Elian. “No don’t even start” said Elian “I didn’t ask you, I ask Kail” she looked at Kail “I … I don’t know. We have our own troubles, we can’t be heroes all the time …” “please “ Kail looked at her begging face “Alright, we better do this quick”. “So where could they set up a camp ?” Liana and Kail looked at Elian “What ? Now you ask me ?!” said Elian. He opened the map “there are mostly woods in this area. It will be hard to tell where their camp is … unless we follow the trail left behind the horses.” “so let’s follow them” said Liana.

==>

The trail went through the road they were about to take. “The trail ends here” said Kail as they reached what seemed to be the end of the trail “They probably went off the road, to the south I guess” said Elian after examining it closely. They kept going south. Suddenly they heard a speech, human voice. They closed to a bush and examined the area. Ahead of them set the same bandits that raided the village. The horses were sitting down on the ground nearby. “That’s their camp !” whispered Liana “Doesn’t seem like it. It looks like they just stopped for a rest” said Elian. “So what are we doing now ?” “We go to talk with this bastard !” said Liana and prepared her sceptre “Just go in like that ?” said Elian “You have better ideas ?” she replied “yes, to follow them. You won’t achieve anything if you just go in like that, the bandits will still be around. Let’s get out of here before they notice us” he began to back from the bush.

Though maybe walking back was a choice he regretted. Suddenly he slipped on a rock and fell on the ground. “Did you hear that ?” said one of the bandits. They began to close to the bush. Kail began to back off from the bush quicker and quicker. Suddenly the two bandits emerged out of the bush. “What’s tha …” he didn’t finish his words as a stream of air blew him away “they’ve seen us !” . The bandits quickly drew their weapons and ran towards them. Kail and Liana began casting magic pushing the bandits away “We should get out of here !” shouted Elian. “What’s going on !” shouted one of the bandits. It was the leader of the group. He quickly closed to the battle with a fire charge in his hands. “step aside” he shouted and began to spray the fire at them. Kail quickly backed off from the now scorched ground. The fire disappeared and the bandit could have a clear view of the attackers. Suddenly his face changed “It’s them ! catch them !”. He casted another fireball at Kail but he dodged aside. They began to run away. “hey Kail remember what I said about the bandits and the crazy prince ? I made my mind, call Lightwing !” “He is miles away ! How do you expect me to call him ?!” “like you did last time we almost got killed by some bandits !” ‘I didn’t !”. The bandits began to climb the horses and open a chase after them. Two horsemen closed to Kail. He threw a force wave at one knocking him off the horse but the other rider jumped off the horse on him, dropping Kail to the ground. Liana kept running until one of the horsemen dropped her to the ground. “Alright I surrender !” said Elian as a bunch of horsemen surrounded him.

==>

The bandits tied them and put on the horses. They began to ride south. “I know it’s not the best time but I’ve told you” said Elian “now we know where their base is” said Liana “yea like you planned that all ahead, hope you have a plan to escape”. The bandit camp was near a steep heal. The heal was surrounded by tents. In the middle of the hill was a small cave. “So how many are they ? 50, 60 people ?” said Elian. The horses stopped inside the camp. “Launch that flare” said the leader of the bandits. The bandits quickly lit up the fuse and a bright red flare went into the air, lighting the area around. “It’s a Neferonian flare” whispered Elian “We better get out of here before they come … c’mon Kail call Lightwing !” “How ? “ he replied. He began to think. Last time when he needed him Lightwing simply came to him. “If you hear me ,come save us” he thought in his mind, there was no much he could do.

“Sir a flare going off at 9 o’clock, 300 meters ahead, level “ said the observer. Prince Telion closed to the window and looked through the scope “yes, it is a flare … set course to it”

==>

“Oh that Neferonian ambassador offered a whole fortune for you” said the bandit leader “Who are you ?” asked Liana angrily “I’m Estirnach, the one and only one who runs this place” “Until the Neferonians come knocking ?” said Kail “You better bit your tongue before I cut it off. You are lucky the ambassador wants you alive” “looks like a camp” said prince Telion “bring us down nearby” “They look like a bandit camp my prince, they won’t take kindly to you wandering around” said the master “So we will come down in big force so they will think twice before attacking us”. The four large anchors were shot to the ground and the prince headed to the teleport chamber. He teleported down. In front of him already stood a formation of 30 soldiers “We are marching into that camp, do not attack unless I give an order” said the prince, wearing his helmet. “Ahead MARCH !” ordered the commander and the formation began to march towards the camp.

The bandits put Kail in the cave together with Elian and Liana. Estirnach was walking around in a good mood, probably thinking about his reward when suddenly one of the bandits ran in “To the east, soldiers marching towards us” “Are those the Neferonians ?” “No, they wear black armor” “prepare everyone ! Do not attack unless I give an order.”. Estirnach quickly grabbed his sword and ran outside. “Great now the crazy prince was the last thing we’re missing here” said Elian. Estirnach walked towards the end of the camp where the bandits were already waiting for him, observing the approaching soldiers. “Who are you and what do you want ?” asked Estirnach. “who are we is not important, we came to talk” “Talk ? about what ?” “I’m looking for some particular person.” “So did that ambassador so what ?” suddenly Estirnarch understood he might have said too much “Do you have them ? How much was the ambassador ready to pay ? I will pay you more” “Yes we have them, all three. I hope you have a box full of gold with you …”. Telion stared at him for a moment “My prince I don’t think we have such sum of money” whispered the master. “And what if I put the offer otherwise ? We won’t hurt you if you give them to us” the bandits and the soldiers began to draw theirs weapons. “You are outnumbered” said Estirnarch “But better equipped” replied Telion “We shall see about that” “I understand it as refusal?” “Yes”. Prince Telion nodded his head towards the commander “CHARGE !” he ordered and the soldiers went into the camp. “Stop them ! Don’t let them take the prisoners !” Shouted Estirnach. Prince Telion sent a dark stream at Estirnach who dodged and backed off “Kill them all !”.

Prince Telion found himself quickly surrounded by bandits. One of them charged towards him but he quickly kicked him to the ground and began to cast magic around him. He quickly overcame the opponents knocking them unconscious and quickly began to clear his path through the camp towards the cave. A sudden mute light appeared in the cave “Twinkle what are you doing here ?” asked Kail. Twinkle closed to him and began to cut the rope with a little white beam “Is Lightwing here too ?” Twinkle chirped with approval. The rope was cut and they could stand on their legs “Good now let’s get the hell out of here” said Elian “Not until we find that Estirnach” said Liana “You never listen, we are going to DIE here if we don’t get out, it’s just a question of time until the Neferonians come here too !”. Suddenly they saw a person running into the cave, it was Estirnach. Liana didn’t think twice, with two powerful blows he was smashed into the floor. “How did you … “ he said as Kail and Elian grabbed his hands , then began to laugh “You found me, now what ? What are you going to do ? Kill me ?” “I’m going to make sure you won’t raid those villages anymore” “Really ? And how will you stop me ?” “leave you here” said Elian. “You launched a flare for the Neferonians to come, and they are not leaving with empty hands. They will have a ready cell for you somewhere deep in Neferon, where you won’t see the sunlight any time soon”. They quickly tied him to the wall of the cave “You can’t just leave me like this !” “Yes we can …” said Liana and they ran out of the cave.

==>

Outside the battle was still raging but it seemed like the soldiers already won. Bandits were scattering to all directions while prince Telion was knocking out anyone who was still fighting. They crouched behind a crate and began to sneak out of the camp. Lightwing was waiting for them just behind the hill. Kail quickly climbed on him and they took off. “Thank you Lightwing” he thought in his mind.

“They are not here sir, but we found the bandit leader tied to the wall” prince Telion closed to examine him “Seems like the warden became the prisoner” said the master “So they must be nearby” said prince Telion “leave him here, I’m sure the Neferonian ambassador will be glad to see this, that will teach you both not to mess up with me, man the ship !” he commanded. The soldiers assembled in a line “Ahead MARCH” ordered the commander and the soldiers began to march back to the dark star.

The following morning old Redrich was ready to eat his breakfast when suddenly he heard a knocking on the door of his house. "What is this fuss all about ?" he asked as he opened the door. Outside was standing the whole village "Come to the square !". In the square the villagers stood around a small box. When he opened it he was amazed to discover it was filled with golden coins "Bless you young lady" he said. Lightwing was already far away, going west. Elian looked down on the green forests below them "What a hell of a place. Bandits, Neferonians , crazy princes, welcome to the In-Between lands"

So when does it stop being a short story and start being a novel?
;.'.;'::.;:".":;",,;':",;

(Kzinti script, as best as can be displayed in Human characters, translated roughly as "For the Patriarchy!")

Right now ? Couse I don't see "short" in the title anymore ... Also what color do you prefer the text in ? It might be a weird question but on the prev forum people complained it was impossible to read the white text on the dark background because it hurt the eyes. I used a blue color similar to what we had in the spoilers on the old forum but maybe you prefer something else.

Bright yellow. But I do like your forethought in all those reserved posts. I think you should include a visit by an owl, or owl involvement. I could provide info or stuff if you so wish.
