Sure, it could, but the question I think we ought to be asking here is whether or not it should.

Absolutely unrelated to the topic, but to your signature: Why would anyone measure FTL speed in AU/second rather than multiples of lightspeed?

Yeah... what's up with that?

It comes from a discussion in EVE (where warp velocity is measured in AU/second). Warp drives there are intrasystem, with jumpgates handling intersystem; someone wanted to know how long it'd take to travel a light-year under standard warp speed (3.5 AU/s), so I did the math.

Could do it in multiples of c, yes. But that's more boring.

I may or may not have done this.

And I may or may not have been fired for it.

As for whether or not it should, yes. It definitely should.

We should measure it in Rods.
Fucking aliens will never get our secrets then!

Let's change the standard scientific unit of speed to cubits per fortnight.

Agreed. The alien commie spies will never understand such democratic human ingenuity!

Precisely one meter in length, marked in centimeters.

What kind of shitty ruler doesn't have inches on one side and centimeters on the other? I honestly don't think I've ever seen one that only had one, except maybe really old ones.
