Is the PlayStation 2 a retro console yet? If not now, how long will it take?
If you ask me, it's not quite there yet, but only a couple of years away from earning the title.

The question is irrelevant, consoles are heresy.

Playstation 2 was the last good playstation. Ratchet & Clank 2 best game of my life. Also Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones. Ah, the memories.

Never had a PS2, but had a Gamecube, which happened to be the last Nintendo console capable of somewhat competing with its counterparts hardware-wise.
I guess that was about the end of the time when game devs were constrained by graphics, after those consoles they had pressure to make graphics as good as possible with the available technology, which I feel caused a hit on gameplay.
So, from my viewpoint, it's retro.

Retro or not, it's the last console I would not consider heresy. It's a beautiful thing with beautiful games. Still playing Jak & Daxter and Final Fantasy on it from time to time.

Im a PC guy through and through, simply because it appeared in our house for the purpose of work and we didn't have the founds for additional consoles. And yeah the PS2 is 15 years old now, the PS3 replaced it merely in 2008 but even that is 7 years ago, those are all big numbers in the tech world so you can prob relate to PS2 as a retro console.

I'd say that a console isn't retro until iterations of it aren't still being made.

PS2 is out of production for some time now.

He means that there are still PlayStations being made. Specifically as the PS3, then the PS4.

By that same logic the NES would not be retro because it has successors, the primary difference being that Nintendo was more creative with console names than Sony.

Up until "Wii U", their console names were somewhat creative, at least compared to Sony, which basically just has the same name for each console and increases the number with every generation.

Which is nothing bad actually, by keeping the same name they can describe their product with a single word - playstation = "Don't worry it will be the same as the previous PS just cooler, stronger and better !". OFC its a different thing whether or not its actually true. Same goes for any other franchise / product name. You know what to expect when Bethesda announces a new TES title and you REALLY know what to expect when activision announces the next CoD
