First I was all 'k' then it loaded and I went entirely 'whoa'

I mean, come on. It's literally a wall of stars in the center of the pic. A wall of stars. Seriously. Think about that for a second.

My god, it's full of stars

But seriously. One day we shall get there.

Just not in our lifetime. Or our children's.

And we call space big and empty ... It somewhat shifts your perspective .

Space IS big and empty for the most part.
The thing is that it's so big that the non-empty stuff ends up being a lot.

Space is empty.

Because even if you take into account all the stuff in it, it's still very, very empty.

Take our solar system, for example; if you put a few grains of sugar and a little drop of sauce onto a plate, the plate would still be more or less empty, right? Same here - we have a few planets and a star, but really, the vast majority of the system is nothing but a lot of SPAAAAAACE.

@Solar No. Probably not within a thousand years, maybe more.
Randall Munroe wrote: The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures that made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space -

Discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision.

I repeat:

A freaking wall of stars on that picture. Space is empty. Galaxies, especially their centers, aren't. There might be space between all those stars, but if you look at that whole charlie foxtrot from any angle and every speck of space behind the galaxy is blocked by celestial bodies, well, I wouldn't really call that empty.

Even a galaxy is a drop in the bucket. In terms of volume? Thoroughly empty.

In terms of what you see? Busier than a whorehouse on free BJ day.

So really, just depends on your perspective.

Its mostly clustered, clusters of stars, then clusters of galaxies, if you are able to perceive one of those clusters the universe is not that empty anymore. BTW in that regard earth is also a cluster of living beings and those beings are clusters of atoms and so on. You are part of those clusters, hence the universe for you is never empty.

A true clusterfuck, indeed.

Space: so big and vast and empty we literally cannot imagine it.

So quit imagining depressing things you cannot even imagine and focus on the clusterfks around you, borrowing sara's words.

One day a human there will look back at that distance and wonder "some day, long ago, that was considered far" much the same way we look at the oceans today compared to our forefathers.
