A song of patriotism and ignorance

I just want to open a general discussion on this. American Sniper recently came out and there is some controversy regarding the protagonist-to-be, Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, so seemed like a good idea

General talking points include
  • Chris embellished parts of his biography and these carry over to the film
  • Chris has been noted to be racist towards those similar to the 'enemy'
    Conversely
  • Chris's personality is not the focus of the film
  • murica? I don't know, a lot of people defending him just invoke this and call people terrorists. idk
Yeah, I'm biased. But let's have a go at it.

Everything has to be a giant joke, doesn't it?

I'm afraid I haven't seen the film yet.

Though minorly related, I assume 'Murica Fuck yeah! Gets invoked quite a lot going by what you've said. Which is amusing seeing as the song is actually taking the absolute tick out of America, it's quite funny to see someone use it as a Pro-American theme.

Haven't seen the fiom; that said, I tend to avoid (Country Here) Fuck Yeah movies. They're... eh.

That said, depending on where you are in the U.S., casual racism and fudged histories are the order of the day, so... yeah.

I thought the movie was supposed to be about the struggles of a soldier and the negative psychological impacts of war. Hardly very good propaganda if that's the case. Haven't seen the movie though.

It's called "American Sniper" and was a major release -- What did you expect?

I haven't seen the film either, but I do want to mention that according to Wikipedia, this guy was killed when he tried to help somebody's PTSD by taking him to a firing range. Is there something I don't know, or is that really as obviously terrible idea as it first appears?

In the good rural/Southern parts of the United States, shooting is a sport. Tackle football is dangerous too, but people still do it. But yeah that does seem pretty shortsighted.
