A test

Post by ACH0225 » Mon Aug 18, 2014 7:48 pm

Suppose you are on vacation in Turkey. You are interested in buying a rug, so you go to Constantinopolis and find a rug merchant. At the merchant's shop, you see a rug you like and ask how much for it. You have 700Reichmarks Euros to spend, and the merchant offers it for 650.

Please post what you would do next in a spoiler below.

Be sure to spoiler it, and not look in anyone else's spoilers until you are done.

Spoiler:
I'd buy it, then use .37 of my remaining Euros to pay for gas in my Honda Civic as I make way back to Reichland.

Spoiler:
Offer him 500 for the rug. If he refuses or raises the price, leave. Come back in 10 minutes, offer him 450 for it. Rinse and repeat, lowering price by 50, until he suggests a price of 500, they buy it.

Spoiler:
Upon further research I have concluded that constantinopolis is in France. I think I wanted to Istanbul and ended up in eastern France. What am I doing here and why did I expect to get rugs?
I use my Opel and take the Autobahn though Deutschland, pay Ausländermaut and go buy some Kebap in my hometown, trying to figure out what happened.
(Yes, I was so confused by the fact that I was in France that I forgot that I had actually found an actual rug shop.)

I buy the rug to use as a warm blanket, spend the rest on cheap high-fat foods, and become a wandering vagabond.

Assuming the 700 are just spendink nand not all my funds,
Spoiler:
Haggle a bit to see if I can get the price down, but if not, buy the (presumably quite amazing) rug anyhow.
Also, it's Istanbul, not Constantinople.

Spoiler:
Well since I'd have no clue how valuable the rug actually is and I know 650 euros is like 1K in dollars I would first ask for information about it, attempting to keep away from keywords like vaule and price so he doesn't start giving me some spiel about how valuable it is. Seem interested and then look around for other rug stores to see if they have a suspiciously similar rug for a much lower price or if I cant find any look for someone who speaks English nearby who looks like a local and ask their opinion, If all else fails google it.
After that either buy it from a cheaper source or haggle the stall owner down as much as possible.

This is of course all in theory, In reality id probably drive four hours to Saint Antonio, Go to the bario markets and buy a bunch of Mexican blankets for cheap unidos americanos prices.

Spoiler:
The price that is offered in a bazaar to a tourist is often stupidly big compared to the actual sell price. The turks as well as any sensible eastern person will demand specifically a bigger price because Europeans are used to pay what the price tag says, nobody argues, however on a bazaar its all about the trade.

Id assume I came there with someone so I will discuss something in Russian lets say (I know Russian and Turks LOVE Russian tourists) to show I have interest in the carpet however then I would turn the merchant down and prepare to walk away. At this point the merchant suggests you a lower price for sure as you both know his price was too big, the price will still be quite big however by noting how much he dropped the price you can get a feel of the actual worth of the project, from here its a question of how much you are ready to pay for that rug, the actual sell price would be usually 4 times less while the price he drops to will be two times the actual one. That means Id demand 200, he will start explaining me diff stuff but I'll keep saying 200 200 as if I know no other words, it gets close to his limit so he will get angry and so I will agree to raise to 220, thats 3 times less the original price.
Hell you are such Europeans BTW ppl -.-, you don't even TRY to lower the price, JUST walking away wont cut it because all prices in all of the shops are identical, its about how much you are ready to drop, they are not afraid that you will find a lower price somewhere, they are afraid someone is ready to lower the price more than them. BTW depending on the carpet size what you buy there is not high quallity, a truly high quallity carpet of a decent size would cost you around 4,000 Euros initially (OFC you can still drop the price).

I'd leave, I don't want a fucking rug. Also the point of this is to point out the cultural divide between taking a good price and a culture of barter or some shit, right? Back to 4chin with you, /pol/lack
