I want to do airsoft. Wat do?

I've got a friend who's into airsoft already, and he's given me some basic knowledge on how to differentiate between guns (different styles of combat, blowback vs. non-blowback, CO2, green gas, electric, spring, etc.), but I still feel a bit lost. My current plan is to buy a
spring-powered sniper and an
electric SMG.
So, how does this sound? Anyone got any suggestions?

IDK about airsoft, but I'm quite the beast at laser tag.
I did once make a BB gun put of a pen and some rubber bands though.

I got nothing, I've only done airsoft once or twice. And don't listen to him ^

I airsofted once and had the welts to prove it. I think nobody really has a clue about airsoft metagaming, so... find a gun you like and go try to shoot some folk?
Also, I made a paper / popsicle stick / rubber band crossbow once.
And only listen to the real-guns bit of ACH's post if you like target-shooting or skeet shooting.

Spending hundreds of dollars on multiple weapons before even knowing if you'll like it doesn't seem wise. Shouldn't you try to rent guns first or something so you'll have a better idea of what you really want?

Incorrect, you immediately buy the biggest damn gun possible. Never fails.

So a $5000 airsoft minigun, then?
I don't know shit about airsoft, but I got a few nerf guns, and I've played some laser tag.
When it comes to homemade weaponry, I'm more the siege engine person. First-And-Only Ruler-Eraser Catapult Battalion.

Airsoft is meh. I used to be into it. Spent a few hundred dollars. The guns are the best part about it, fun to make and collect and use, but the sport itself is not as fun nor as satisfying as paintball. People do airsoft for the value of simulation. It is fun if you have a group to do it with, though. Be warned, most of those that are actually serious about the sport are 13 year-olds trying to reenact CoD.
I have a sniper rifle, a CO2 blowback pistol, one or two shotguns, and an electric AUG (shitty plastic waste of $170).

For your choices: you're not going to get a decent electric for less than $100, and even in the $100-200 range you have to be careful. I wouldn't buy anything from JG. My AUG was a JG and it's a $170, doesn't fit together too well, half of it's plastic, and the non-modular, plastic magazine broke after a few uses. Make sure you have plenty of duct tape if you buy from them. UTG makes pretty good, sturdy stuff.
Can't remember what brand of sniper's rifle I have The sniper rifle is a UTG M-324 S gen 5. I got it for $100 and it always performed well with little maintenance. Came with a bipod and red dot sight, both of which are of pretty good quality. With a long-range rifle, you'll want a good hop-up system, decent FPS, and not too much on the overall length if you're going to be playing woodsball. I also have a UTG three-barrel shotgun that I got for around $60 and a Taurus PT99 CO2 full/semi auto blowback pistol that was $100. It's probably the most fun to use, I highly recommend it if you have a spare $100, want a good sidearm (I've used it as a main before too), and don't mind eating CO2 cartridges.
I'd advise you not to get an electric unless you're willing to make a significant investment and to make sure you have a decent semi-auto pistol or two. Also remember to get a speedloader, never buy .12g BBs unless you're filling grenades, don't get gear that's too cumbersome, make things. One time I bought a $20 paintball gun from walmart and made some shells from BBs and aluminum. That was one of the most effective things I ever used.

I've already played some airsoft with rented guns, as well as doing paintball with some more serious groups, so I'm reasonably sure what I'm getting into.
The UTG sniper you suggested looks like it'll be nice. I'll certainly look into getting one of those.
If I get a sniper rather than a standard close-quarters rifle or SMG, I'll need a sidearm of some sort. I probably won't be getting a gas blowback gun, because they use up gas so quickly. What would you recommend as far as sidearms go?

Two guns that I would recommend. SMGs aren't very good unless they're KWA gas (Vector, MP7), however, those are expensive. KWA is a very good company. Personally, I own a VFC Scar-L and some MOLLE gear. Also, get a smart charger if you get an AEG.

I'd recommend a pistol straight from the surplus.

I'm with ACH, buy real guns. There way cooler and when you play RL CoD those little fuckers won't be able to cheat.
