Was. My great-grandparents starved to death, and all the nice old buildings in Atlanta were razed.

My Great-Grandfather survived Russia and as he was disobeying orders to hold the line tactically retreating with the squad he commanded, he was shot in the back by dem hungarians just three weeks before the bloody war was over. He may have been a fascist asshole, but he was also a badass.

World War 1? Why was he shot by Hungarians? Was that the anti-Habsburg rebellion or something?

What makes you think it was WW1?
I am talking about WW2 and him coming back alive form Stalingrad.

Why were Hungarians shooting at him? And my Grandfather was in WW2, so I assumed your Great-Grandfather would have been older.

Yes, he would have been.
Fro reference, my grandfather was born during WW2.
And basically *-Germany was occupying hungary at the time and since my Great Grandfather, being Austrian, fought for the Germans, he was a target for local rebel groups. And since it was a rather chaotic retreat, the rebels had an easy job at killing him off. Also keep in mind he essentially wore an NCO uniform and those guerilla fighters always go for the highest ranking guys first.

Ah, a rebel group then. IIRC Hungary had an official Fascist(possibly Falangist) government.

My great-great-uncle was in WWII... he was Volkssturm on the Eastern Front and was captured. He was released in 1948.

Several of my relatives served. One of my great-uncles (?) flew bombers for the US, and another one (?) drove an ambulance. They both came home, but the ambulance driver was one of the first people into the concentration camps at Bergen-belsen when they were liberated by the Allies, and he was pretty messed up by that. He was a Baptist minister before the war, and afterwards he didn't believe in God anymore. He never talked about it.

That's funny, I had a great-uncle who died a few years ago who became a Presbyterian minister right during WW2. He served in the Pacific theater with my grandfather, I think.

My great grandfather was also in WWII. One of the strongest men I've ever known. Survived in a * death camp for three years before those damn Americans showed up and shipped him off as a POW.

Just kidding, my great-grandfather was Swedish-American, not a *.

We talk about WW2 Grandfathers ? 3 of my Great grandfathers served in the red army, one died during a * bombing run while the other lost his leg (Grandpa Isia (Russian shortened for Israel) whos name I bear !) , he had that funny wooden leg that he would take off before going to sleep, imagine one of my uncles came to stay with may father's grandparents, he walks into the rum to discover Grandpa was taking off his leg and putting it on a chair by the bed, he ran out screaming cosue he didn’t know it was wooden  , apart from that we also got a lot of their medals packed somewhere in one of the closets ... together with the wooden leg (nah just kiddin ) . BTW he was getting a new wooden leg once in a while but he never used em as he was used to his first leg so you could imagine that if you open one of the closets in his room you could find a whole collection of legs staring back at you, hell his house was creepy ...
