Well its not a compass but rather a star, but you know you could have asked the one who made it:

I always thought it was a neet body design for a ship, half globe with spikes.

The problem is that I wasn't sure who made it originally, so I posted it publically.

Question: Why is neither pole visible? You lose both the southern tip of South America and the northern parts of Canada and Greenland. At least one of the two poles should be visible on any picture of the Earth.

the view is actually a little bit angled from the north, so you do see the north pole, but it isn't shown because it doesn't count as a landmass. And I don't get where you don't see the northern part of Canada and Greenland.
Tho I agree that this is not a 100% accurate representation of Earth, as otherwise, even at this angle, the southern tip of South America should still be visible.
However, this is an artistic representation of Earth and not a technical drawing claiming to be an accurate representation of how Earth looks from space, so that doesn't really matter.

After consulting several different types of world maps, I have come to the conclusion that the globe is indeed not showing the north pole.
As a result, the image is to be used as an artistic representation of Earth only.
I will assume that the artist did not put pocus on 100% accuracy in depicting an exact part of earth that could be visible from a certain position in space.

In fact I will tilt this freaking Earth image so that this whole thing becomes a random landmass for you so that you leave me alone !
