That's not what happened at all, it's very well documented that the people in Donetsk and Crimea wanted to secede, and there wasn't really any reason for Crimea to be part of Ukraine anyway. Also, according to RT, this is the Ukrainian military:

Oh god you Europeans make such a fuss from every single explosion you see, come here on vacation in a year or so Ill show you around our bunks . Either way the smoke clouds over Slavyansk are no worse than the smoke clouds over Aleppo, perhaps even better, there the city was not levelled by the Ukrainian government, that is a civil war, perhaps a beginning of something bigger, that is Russia’s ambition to expand, but for now it doesn't mean WW3 for you. Though if I were the US I would probably say that if Russia sends troops to Ukraine they will do so, too. That will be sort of a red line ensuring Russia will not directly attack Ukraine, halting their advance. In the same time this statement is problematic because Putin simply laughs at the west, honestly I don't know what Obama was thinking about when he never upheld a single red line he ever put in the history of his second term, he is in deep shit now.

The reason the EU is pretty powerless is because they depend on gas from Russia.
On the other hand, the Russian economy depends on gas exports to Europe, so they can't really do anything.
Also, the US and Ukraine are actually right when they say Russia is helping the uprising, because technically them threatening the Ukraine to stop fighting the rebels is an intervention.
While it is possible, I agree with Iv that, if WW3 would happen, it would still take a while until then and the chance of it turning into a nuclear war is VERY low. It may mean a long-term dispute between Russia and the west (At least as long as Putin is in office. Which I doubt will be something that's gonna change anytime soon.), but I don't think we have an immediate threat of open war yet.
It's definetly worth keeping an eye on the situation tho, no one knows how it will develop and being up to date on a weaponized conflict that involves two large powers that don't neccessarily like each other is definetly a good idea.
