In fact most of 40k is super high-tech. It's just contemporary humans then don't understand their tech anymore.
Yeah, you beat me to it, Vin. Shit's hi-tech as fuck.
In fact, its hightech's so high, every single machine has a goddamn soul. They build everything according to ancient schematics and templates from before that giant warp-storm happened, you know, WH20k or something. Back when it still was standard everything-is-chrome sci-fi.
Human engineers back then managed to increase efficiency and effectiveness of all designs to the absolute possible maximum. When middle ages in space happened the cult mechanicus started just using those, because trying and making something new is a waste of time when you're lvl99.

Also, bonus fun-fact: The Baneblade production que(s) on mars go(es) farther than the eye can see. Bend around the planet's surface, further than the horizon goes. You need to be high-tech to pull that off.

They have WWI tanks and no computers. Sure, they have lasers and spaceships and power armor and whatever, but nothing near what you'd expect for the year 40 000, and all because technological advancement would be heresy or whatever.

EDIT: Des posted like seconds before me. I admit, I'm not well-read enough on the topic of WH40K to keep a reasonable argument either for or against any of it, but from the little I've read it's more dark magic than tech.
Also, WWI tanks. Seriously. Why.

It's heresy because, well, it's hard to do anything when everything may or may not be alive and able to kill you instantly. They have a good reason, not that it's the best reason.
They do have computers. They're called Machine Spirits/cogitators. I mean, how do you think that titan can do anything useful?

Believe me, they HAVE computers. Logic-machines they call them, but that counts. Also, all their AI is powerful enough to simulate something like feelings or souls, so that's pretty advanced.
And yes, technological advancement would be heresy, because it's a big, big universe and humanity already had to deal with AI-rebellions and what not. So they don't dare to do so without the emperor's permission. And you know what state he's in.
Doesn't mean they need it, though. Their available technology is already advanced enough to fight a galaxy-wide war.

Okay, maybe I've misjudged WH40K, and maybe Chapter Master Addeptis from the old forum planted a seed of WH40K hatred in me.
If there's a WH40K book that isn't just everything-is-shit-and-shit-is-horrible, that actually tells stuff about the WH40K universe, feel free to point me in its direction.

That's a big universe. Further specify your desired direction.

Ha. Hahahahahah. The closest thing you might get is the First Edition Codex (Rogue Trader). But generally everything is excessively grimdark so GW doesn't have to continue any story in any meaningful fashion.

Yeah, I'll be honest, I felt the same way up until I tried out Dawn of War and bought the Blud Rehven Omnibus.

People don't like it, though, because apparently the author tick all over canon :/

Still, Dawn of War is a pretty good game, currently like 6 bucks on Steam. Vinyl and I play semi-regularly.

Yeah so long story short, WH40K isn't my kind of science fiction.
Now, to return to the topic, say what you want about the germans and the nazis and stuff, but they were and still are brilliant engineers.

I'll just list the ones I've read myself so far. None of them disappointed me in the slightest. Rather, I was really impressed, but that might be because WH40k grimdark resonates with my vibes, but you should at least be entertained.

Eisenhorn Omnibus (Inquisition, gets you a nice perspective on different areas of the imperium, and, obviously, on the inquisition with all of its intrigue and different philosophies)
Ravenor Omnibus (Have yet to find someplace that has it, same meta-arc as Eisenhorn.)
Space Wolf (Space vikings. Seriously, give it a shot, it's glorious and fun. Gives personal perspective on that chapter. Four books. First three are in an omnibus.)
Battle of the Fang (Space Wolves chapter again, set in M32, surprise attack by the traitor-chapter of the Thousand Sons. Much action once the battle actually begins, and interesting info on Space Wolves and Adeptus Astartes in general.)

Also, currently I'm reading Baneblade. Great insight into the imperial army and adeptus mechanicus so far.

Try any of them out, I posted them here in the order I've read them. I think you should too do that, Eisenhorn only requires basic knowledge of lore. Nothing about primarchs, all them chapters and stuff, just plain "Heresy! D:<". Rest is picked up along.

"Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods." -WH40k

In other words, GRIMDARK GRIMDARK GRIMDARK MWAHAHAHA.

I don't mind it, but I mainly play(ed) Tau in Dawn of War (or one of the expansions, dark crusade maybe?).

For the greater good.

I hear Ciphus Caine is pretty good. Shit's expensive, though. (But doesn't that only reinforce the rumor?)

That's why used books are preferred.

Mostly.

When they don't reek of cigarettes and dead chicken.

The used price is 30 bucks bro

Sucks when sellers don't just stick a generic book price on and roll with it :<
