Raspberry Pi

Post by Tell » Wed Dec 26, 2012 2:30 pm

I'm posting from my new raspberry pi, its as big as a credit card and has 512MB RAM. My memory is an SD card that has 4GB. The
graphics capabilites are roughly equivalent to Xbox 1 level of performance.

Only 12 then? What do you do with it though?

I think I'll pick up a couple of these for my siblings. It'd be a dream come true to see them getting into this sort of thing.

So if I got this right:
It's a computer with low/ok memory, RAM and graphics, only the size of a credit card?

It's essentially a motherboard designed as cheaply as possible to provide an affordable educational platform for hardware alteration and programming.

The CPU is roughly equivalent to the old Pentiums in performance. RAM is low, being either 256 or 512 (not very ideal for stressful tasks). The GPU, on the other hand is superb, being on par with sixth generation consoles.

Aren't there only 12 of these in the world?

But then again, this is a pre release, so in the future you should be able to get the real thing, which would likely be faster.

Or get several of these, join them together, put them in a box, and have a small box computer.

A friend of mine did something like that, but with the base components being taken from higher performance stuff, cost a lot but the final thing runs faster than anything I've ever seem.

The ones in the auction are the prototypes that were made before production.

Why was Prototype warned? I don't understand how this is irrelevant.

I don't know. That is actually completely relevant, because only 12 of those models were created. He asked a question too, so I vote to overrule that warning.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about because I'm certain there are more then 12 raspberry pi's in the world. If you read Tiel's post its designed for low cost and educational purposes. The board it self cost 35$ but then you need to buy the power cable, the CD card, the connecter to the monitor, the keyboard and the mouse.

Prototype made a rather snide and irrelevant comment about his iPad, upon warning he edited his post but did not remove my text, for whatever reason. I'm going to go ahead and delete his post so as to prevent further confusion.

A friend of mine said he had one of these, but he only had 3.14 pieces of red fruit.

But yeah I didn't know what the rule was about editing warnings so I just left it there, even though the original comment was intended as a joke, sorry didn't mean to cause confusion there.

Jokes aside, that blueberry raspberry pie looks delicious interesting, but what's the best thing to do with it?
