Just open a cmd and type cd [path to wherever you put vox_package] then do:
binvox [Name of 3d model, must be in vox_package] -d [how long (in blocks) you want the ship to be, lenths over 500 are buggy in my experience] -t schematic
then go into vox_package and import the schematic with mcedit. If walls are disappearing, try to make sure they are thickish in the sketchup model, and they should show up

Well, you make ships that are already 3d models. It's a simpler task to just port them.
