But the ring doesn't look circular, making the rest of the ship look bad. The back looks out of place because the rest of the ship is more curved while the back is a bland square.

No, he had to make the ring that way to avoid a lawsuit. I totally have the whole 'vertical ring' thing patented.

I actually picked insipiration from "Sword of the Stars II" Sol Force Cruisers.

They have a "Node Driver",a ring on the back.

They had "ring-things" on ships in Star Wars and Star Trek. So no, not your original idea.

Neither, actually. Vulcan ships are a recent development, and Star Wars has never had any ring-ships. But good try.
