The game, Shores of Hazeron, solves these with my model. Sure, it may be low profile. Here's how it works- Engines, or gravity drives as they are called, change the ship's acceleration through space. The speed limit, without warp, is the speed of light (though this is a bit ridiculous). All planets dynamically move around the sun, and rotate. If you want to stop, either the AI does it for you, or you can curve around your target in a circular motion until you slow down.
It's actually pretty easy to control, contrary to what you may think. It doesn't favor, though quick and easy transport. Depending on acceleration, it may take 10 minutes to slow down from your top speed. The player base (Pretty small) has NO complaints with it.

Well such accelerations rule out any possibility of combat (changing dir for 10 min ... changing dir for 10 seconds is already a lot). If this is used for travel between planets it is as good as simple warp, the later will probably be better.

No, really, it doesn't. There is a LOT of combat, a lot of fleet maneuvers, etc etc. Try playing it BEFORE making assumptions, or look at the recorded history for the game, etc.
Solar Systems are way to small to use warp effectively, so sub-light is used. If acceleration was useless, then how come this game isn't some completely dead backwater hate storm?
