a box around the player would suck, you would just see a person sitting down and magically moving.
Flan's mod doesn't do overlays

So how does Flan's work? I thought it was a framework like Modloader but for vehicles?

you should look at Flan's OP, or http://www.minecraft-SMP.de, which should explain a lot.

basically, it is a tool which allows creation of certain vehicle types, for example Planes, cars, AA guns and MGs.
but each one works in a very specific way, they only have certain "parts", for example a plane model will have the body, the tail, the tail flaps, yaw flaps, right wing, left wing, right wing flaps and left wing flaps, with the functional parts (flaps) moving according to player input (for example, on the AR-15, when a yaw input is given, the joystick will rotate).

It adds a load of gameplay stuff, but also adds an API that allows people to create their own content, which is what I am doing.

on another note, the Rocket Pod is now fully functional in game.

Not really.
You can make content packs with weapons, deployables, parts, turrets, vehicles, planes and armor, but technically you only have little control over what your stuff does other than changing some numbers.
And making propellers and stuff move as you want.
But doorgunners in dropships would need to use regular assault rifles, as weapon control is restricted to the person in the driver seat, and then he can only turn weapons if in a tank.
Technically, you can have machine guns pointing out the doors of your helicopter, you might even be able to have them fire, but they won´t be turnable.
Heavy restrictions what you can actually do.
Homing missiles and VTOLs are also impossible.
As well as leg movement, as the only movement flan´s mod supports is rotation, and the only rotation you can control manually is turret turning on a tank.
Every other rotation is dependent on movement speed.

Yes, you can do sniper rifles with scopes.
The problem is, that the range on at least flan´s own weapons is too low to actually make a sniper rifle useful.
I don´t know if there´s a variable for range, but with WW2-pack or MW-pack weapons you definetly don´t want sniper rifles.
If you can get close enough to someone to get him into fireing range, you can hit him without a scope as well without needing so much time.
The scope is mainly useful as a telescope, to be honest.
But if there´s a range variable, that problem could be, of course, easily fixed.

also Manus's new Javelin seems to be both deployable and handheld at the same time, with the handheld having a scope.
I am interested as to this is the same weapon, or just two variants.

So there´s no way of making a gun fire far enough to actually make a sniper rifle worth the extra cost for the scope and the slow fireing speed?

unless you give a sniper a really high damage, that might make it worth using, so far my snipers are just there because I had some sniper icons, but they have relatively fast fire rates.

Also, considered switching to the SMP-parts package yet?
You know, they have some highly unused parts dedicated to sci-fi models.
You could keep your Ion engines anyway... As an addition.
Or use his "space booster".

I'd rather not have this pack depend on stuff from other content packs, just makes it easier to install and use.
Although I plan to flesh out the parts that are currently in the package, the ion engines are really powerful and should be made more expensive.

If you in-cress the accuracy of a sniper to 1 its will have unlimited range, and there's also a little line in the ye old pack to in-cress bullet speed in the crossbow txt
