I do think it will be eventually be necessary to avoid players having large objects in their inventory. But then again, part of Minecraft is it's unrealism.

Of course. Players can only carry 36 weapons, because that's how many slots the inventory has. Of course, if they have all those weapons, they won't have any ammunition. Or anything else, for that matter. I think that by far the simplest way to do this is to simply not have tanks and stuff be items.
