If you've ever played an FPS and disintegrated some guy, you were probably looking at a texture animation. It's simply a way of doing SFX on the surface of models cheaply.

It is done quite easily in minecraft textures too, for example I made an animated electricity arc out of cobweb. I created a few copies of that arch and changed it slightly, then but them all in one file. As a result when the animation goes through the file we get a moving arch of electricity. It requires MCpatcher to work though.
