How about we rename netherrack and use it as the main material for the core of the planet.
You would have to mine through an awful lot of Netherrack, but then you could get solid iron blocks from the core.
Or something.
If you don´t get flooded by lava or accidentally break the planet because you were using a giant bore laser from space.

Have it be half-molten stone and give you heat/fire demage if touching it without preparations.

But this is minecraft. Let's just add a way that if you drill through the crust to bedrock, you can eventually pierce it and start mining through the nether, and then pierce that and start mining through the core. Also it would be cool if we could make things much deeper somehow. Maybe instead of hitting the nether you stop at bedrock but you still get more and more ores from an invisible and unvisitable level below? Also, I don't want planets to be the main thing to mine. Sure, you need iron and stuff to get to space, but once you are there, asteroids and lava/desert planets would provide a richer income... Assuming you can survive.
darn ninjad. Dwarf Fortress?

There's no reason to do that. You're trying to find a justification to include something that just doesn't fit. It's much easier and better just to axe it.

Instead, the nether realm itself interprets the light level on a different scale than the overworld, so light level 0 is still quite visible, and nether mobs don't spawn based on light. If you tried to copy terrain from the nether into the overworld, it would be incredibly dark.
Edit: In theory, we can change the lighting scale based on depth much like how void fog is done now, but I'm not sure this is a constraint we should be forcing on a world. If somebody wanted black caverns in the deep underground, they would be unable to do so.
