Make me a drop-pod in techne. It must have a window on at least one side, and a window on the bottom. Also, breaking rockets on the bottom, cause crashing in to the ground at orbital velocity is boring. This isn't for FC really, though I guess it could be implemented.

Why use techne? If I had access to my computer and enough time I could do an awesome one without techne, though I would have to render it through flans mod, seeing as that's currently the simplest way that I can do.

The windows will just rely on texture, so you could just make solid walls and texture in the windows.

Yeah, you don't need techne. Just model. Anyways, windows are just texturing.

You can't have my windows.

Sorry, but when I'm crashing into a planet at high speed in an escape pod, the last thing I want to is have a glass floor.

Why would you use glass in an escape pod in the first place? Use something like a transparent block of whatever you made the rest of the escape pod out of.

I don't think we need to reinvent the wheel here. Outer hull blocks won't start breaking until the vessel's HP drops below a certain threshold, so you could make it out of dirt if you wanted. This was a decision made so that people could design for style rather than making giant cubes of metal.

However, you won't be able to build your ship out of dirt, because there will be forbidden blocks on the exteriors of ships.

Okay, bad example. Hull material does affect HP and armor.

I suggest just as I said giving each material resistance against weapons and hit points. Once the HP is out the block breaks. This way you have to deal with breaches and it promotes tactical combat rather than trying to get the overall hp down. It also makes sense now to add more armor to weak spots (or abuse the lack of it)

If it's on a per-block basis you could never give each block a reasonable resistance. It's either trivially easy to punch through, or it becomes impenetrable with a few layers. Worse, it encourages borg cube syndrome and punishes unique design. The compromise is that health is calculated with more conventional game mechanics, but physical damage is procedurally generated. A strong enough hit will punch holes in the hull, or create fracture lines, eventually leading to entire pieces breaking off and drifting away, along with any power lines, piping, equipment, and personnel who are in the wrong place at the wrong time. I've seen some papers on stress fracture simulation. As long as it's in bursts, it's doable.

Well but I'm not sure random holes appearing in the hull when your hp drops is good - at least make sure it appears where it hits. Also it won't save you from the Borg cube syndrome and worse promote another thing - why wouldn't I place blocks randomly in the middle of the ship to buff HP ? It will damage the tactical gameplay - from breaches to combining diff weapons and stuff like that, ad also forget about a breach missile (Which makes a hole in the hull and let the oxygen escape).
