Will there be world anchors in FC (but only admins can place them hopefully) so that if a server has enough power all the map could be loaded, and configure what size the anchor is.

Re: World Anchors
Why would anyone want the ENTIRE map loaded at one time?

Re: World Anchors
When you say the entire map, do you mean all 233 GB of uncompressed blocks in an average planet?

So where do we steal the server to do this, because I am severely doubting that anyone has that here.Ivan2006 wrote:He propably does.fr0stbyte124 wrote:When you say the entire map, do you mean all 233 GB of uncompressed blocks in an average planet?

Re: World Anchors
1) The entire planet doesn't have to be in memory at any given time.
2) The multi-resolution data which gets sent to clients is pre-processed and stored separately for streaming. No need to unpack everything.
3) Only the surface of the planet needs to be generated ahead of time. Rock stratta and caves can still be generated procedureally, so most planets won't take up a ton of disk space initially.

Re: World Anchors
Thats what I meant thanks frost, but so you can see everything with a far render distance on a planet in the distance you see a planet, you know, maybe another solar system

Re: World Anchors
You mean will those stars be visitable? Probably not. All interstellar travel is done at gates, for practical reasons. We might be able to do something superficial, though, like draw a constelation map in the sky showing the routes between systems.

How will assault work if the only mode of interstellar travel is done via gates?fr0stbyte124 wrote:You mean will those stars be visitable? Probably not. I imagine it will involve traveling through gates.catsonmeth wrote:How will assault work if the only mode of interstellar travel is done via gates?fr0stbyte124 wrote:You mean will those stars be visitable? Just gonna place these MAC stations... Here...fr0stbyte124 wrote:I imagine it will involve traveling through gates.catsonmeth wrote:How will assault work if the only mode of interstellar travel is done via gates?fr0stbyte124 wrote:You mean will those stars be visitable? So true, make it based on what area you travel from in sectors not gates, but based on direction you are facing the system perhaps?
Re: World Anchors
casoncomemeth is fr0st's new name.
I was thinking that you would warm your jump capacitors, then enter the coordinates of the exit and enter hyperspace. Then you would just cruise toward your destination surrounded by pretty colorful swirls.
