That's your problem. What I'm working on is simple. You make a droppod, it falls on things and you can ride. You add TNT to it, it explodes on things. You add a chest to it, it droppods supplies in. You add a cake to it, it droppods a cake from orbit specifically to the xz of your destination.

That's all there is to it. For now.

BTW I don't think armor will negatively effect someone's creativity. If you make an armor block equal in strength to a few others combined it will allow to make that bulky armor in an elegant design. The limit in this case again will be the weight as this block is going to weight like a few standard armor blocks.

With a 100 times rarer material, right?

Well not 100 times rarer but yea. Maybe even combining and processing existing armor to create a better one in one block.

IE: sure you can have nice ships, but you have to be 5 times weaker in battle.

I agree with Mac on this. It's a bad metric to set up block resistance hierarchies like that. Doubling a hull to get 20X the resistance of a different tier of hull is too easy to exploit. Making it more expensive won't cut it, either, because different players are going to have wildly different incomes.

We wanted to move away from the trap most RPGs fall into where things at a higher level are completely untouchable by lower levels, even when it doesn't make any logical sense. That's why we were focusing on specialization.

Well even the slightest progress in weapon technology will turn your ship into a paper sheet (Burnt down obviously) so we should either add progress or remove it completely (same lasers for everyone). It's quite the opposite actually that is right. I looked at what my fav RPG franchise did with monsters levelling. In Morrowind monsters in curtain areas were much more deadly than monsters in other. This meant I couldn't go to certain areas because they were too hard yet and so I tried to get as much money a possible to buy better equipment and I constantly tried to improve my character - it drove my game , the will to discover what's there and beat the challenge. Oblivion did the opposite - it made the monsters scale with the character. As a result all monsters became sort of the same. With a bit of work they weren't hard at all and with nowhere to try and reach the combat became boring. The feeling that once that thing was a threat to you and now you can destroy it gives you much satisfaction.

While I do understand the need to give someone a chance I don't support making everyone equal. The player should know that he can't beat certain ship types and that he should avoid them. In order to protect them though I already suggested AI military ships patrolling space and guarding it. It is possible to defeat them but doing so will ruin your relations with that specific faction making them to hunt you down with more powerful ships. The technology will not give a big edge if the technological differences are small or at least medium but at big differences you should know your place. It gives you a goal, a reason to progress.

Also combining armor allows to solve the problem of people who want build good looking ships without hurting their protection and firepower. I can't think of a better solution to this problem.

Exactly. If you want to put ten times the effort into a ship, therefor having one tenth the total fleet size, your ships can look good.

And that's not even mentioning what Frost said.
