Y'know, it's funny. I got a lot of opinions on Spore before I got it, and I think I found at least one person who absolutely loved each stage and hated all the others. There was one review that said that the cell stage was the only good one, another that said the combat in the creature stage was great, Tiel loves the Tribal stage, there was somebody else who liked the Civilization stage, and somebody else who loved the huge map in the Space stage. Likewise, I think there's been one person who's hated each stage.

Cell is arcadey, Creature doesn't exactly inspire a "what I do here will affect me for the rest of the game!" even though it does.
Tribal stage is a unique take on RTS, that, while clunky, was really intriguing IMO. After that it's the most generic take on strategy games ever in the Civilization stage, where you will atone for all your pacifism by having units whom's sole attack is shooting propaganda into the enemy's vehicle.
I can't really comment on the space age, but by the time the novelty had worn off and it became so repetitive that I just left the game and never booted it up again :P

Spore is what happens when you base a game around a cool mechanic and then have no idea no idea what the rest of the game should actually be.
I also wasn't a big fan of the cartoony take it had. I wanted to see an epic spanning the entire history of a race, and I what I got was mini-games.

I agree, space was repetitive. I became so powerful that I essentially conquered the entire quadrant I was in. And then I accidentally declared war on my other world, and I couldn't defeat them. And then I had half the spiral arm, and I couldn't juggle everything, so I killed everyone with my massive capital and planet busters. This took incredibly long (With the help of my brother, who was once obsessed with this game). And then most of the galaxy was literally destroyed after a few years. SO space became, well, worthless, because no planets.
I haven't touched the game for years now.

I used to love the game. With Galactic Adventures, you could build pretty much anything. I liked the creativity of it, but it was still limiting. I would've liked more realistic graphics, more in-depth stages (although the cell stage was cute), and definitely the ability to construct larger space-ships. And larger planets. And the ability to walk around you ship. Come to think of it, that was first gave me the idea for Futurecraft...

Try GalCiv 2.
I don't care for it much myself, but it is exactly what you are looking for; made by the people who developed SOASE.

So, I played more today and got to the Tribal stage. I think I need to work on understanding what to do a bit more. I got a few guys, gave them axes, and sent them to attack the neighboring village. Despite the fact that the other guys were outnumbered and unarmed and had less health, my entire tribe was massacred. And while it was happening, a monkey stole my food. After my tribe was killed, it went back in time or something to when they were alive, and in the process removed all the villagers' clothing and stuff and did not let me reload it. So I'm going to have to outfit the villagers again. Such a useful thing to make me redo. So, screw that, at least for now. We played SoaSE today.

At some point, I just said screw you to the planets, because my average income was still so ungodly high even if I lost a system or two of T3 purple spice planets.
