I could record it next time, provided that
a) my computer is not currently in a state of constant lag/stutter
and
b) I am not at my grandparents' place at the time of playing. (Those old farts tend to get really bored and annoying if you don't visit them weekly.)

It's not important you actively record so much as remember to save the replay file. The problem with the former compared to the latter is that, as seen in solar's video, you're only seeing one guy's actions.
Also, with Error gone that's one key left.

oh, there's a replay file? I didn't know that even.
Might take a deeper look into the functions of the game.
And about SOTP, it definetly makes the game more fast-paced.
I honestly am not so fond of it, as many of my favourite strategies won't work.

Re: Anyone interested in SOASE this Sunday?
I know, that's one of the impressions I got of it when I first played. But that was the only time, and everything warrants at least a second chance. I think once we actually get a few games in most of us will be good enough for an SOTP match to go on for a bit.Ivan2006 wrote:oh, there's a replay file? I didn't know that even.

And that's both keys taken. I'll send them out to you guys later.

Re: Anyone interested in SOASE this Sunday?
the idea is that in SOTP, the first few seconds are really what counts. If you're covenant, it's all about surviving UNSC MACs and if you're UNSC it's all about getting through covenant shields before they take down your fleet.
If it's cov VS cov, of course, you may get stuff fairls similar to what you're used to from default SoaSE, but UNSC VS UNSC definetly is very quick-paced. You can lose half your fleet in the first few seconds of a battle and not even properly scratch the enemy fleet. In a simgleplayer game, I once made the mistake of attacking a flood world with a mediocore fleet. My entire fleet was annihalated and the flood lost, like, 2 UNSC frigates or something.

Re: Anyone interested in SOASE this Sunday?
And that's annoying.
I really don't like how mod authors take it upon themselves to decide OMG THIS GAEM IS 2 SLOEW and adjust the *default* state of their content to match instead of just, I dunno, letting end users utilize the inbuilt tools to alter the flow of gameplay to their heart's desire?
In my mind SOASE isn't supposed to be a rapid clicker spamfest like SC2 is...although those skills can help you a lot when it comes to macro the default pace of Sins is designed to reflect its 4X roots.

I honestly never played SC2, so I completely lack such skills. I usually try to compensate that with my tactical skills, but I'm not sure how much that'll help me with you...

Re: Anyone interested in SOASE this Sunday?
If you can at least hold your own in SC2 ladder you'll probably be able to do good in SOASE, is all I'm saying. Strategy is a huge part of it, but honestly if you can't maintain unit production, expansions, resource management etc, or focus on more than one area at a time, you're gonna have a bad day. Sins is a lot more forgiving than contemporary RTS in that regard (the slow pace helps a lot with that) but it remains a potential achilles heel.
As far as how well you do, I think you'll be fine. No one here is really all that good except Pat, and I'm not sure if he'll be playing again. What we did in the old days was setup the games to try to gank him, anyway.

Yea, you have to make good use of your resources and not only on one side.
You basically have to balance your stuff, depending on your plans, situation and other factors.

You can get by without giving orders to units in combat at all and just let the ship AI handle it. It's more than capable of dealing with normal battles, and so you can focus on empire management and larger-scale stuff. I very rarely tell ships to do anything more specific than 'all bombers in gravity well, focus on that cap' or something like that.

Re: Anyone interested in SOASE this Sunday?
Yes, but that's really the difference between us and Pat. Early on you want to see every battle, see every explosion, retreat every damaged ship...but then you reach the realization you point out, where the bigger picture is much more important. He's gone back, though, and actually manages to pull off a great balancing act between manipulating his ships to their full potential and managing his empire.Kzin wrote:You can get by without giving orders to units in combat at all and just let the ship AI handle it. Microing is another skill you can pick up in SC2, incidentally enough.
e: Also, Iv, Error - gonna need you two to get online before I can gift

Yes... yeees... keep thinking that... it'll make it so much easier to tear your fleet apartKzin wrote:You can get by without giving orders to units in combat at all and just let the ship AI handle it. I'll probably just zerg with fighters and watch your ships drown in them. Because even flak ships can choke on a deathball of angry bees.
