So Vin and I were chatting yesterday, and had a thought:
New pass the save, but with a different setup.
Firstly, nobody is permitted to go anywhere past the Mun. Kerbin-Mun-Minmus(?) Only. Second, combat and such will primarily be ground, sea, and air based; suborbital is okay. No armed orbital or transorbital spacecraft.
Mods would be KerbinSide, NEAR/FAR (will take a vote on that), and BDArmory.
Think a cold war / jet age style thing.
Sound good?

Automated air defense, max. one strike per turn I'd imagine.
We need to find a consens on how to manage teams though. (AFAIK BDarmory only supports two teams)

I'd think so. Everyone uses team A. Attacker begins attack, switches to team B, executes attack, switches back, return home. Or die on the attack.
Also, if you're worried? Surround your base with Goalkeeper CIWS and missile racks. Very little airborne craft will get close enough to do damage.
Also, with KerbinSide, building a base isn't required; everyone picks a runway they'll launch from and bam.
