I've decided I'll build a miniature version of the Elysium I'm currently not building because of framerate. Basically, it'll be composed of an ion engine sail, a xenon storage module ( removable when empty and replaceable ), an optional fuel tank and nuclear engines segment and at the end I'll attach the Hexion V7 which will be designed for landings and take off only so it won't have to worry about having enough fuel to travel to other planets itself. All but the landing / takeoff module will remain in orbit at all times.
I also need to figure out how I'm going to fit enough solar panels and thermal generators in there to keep all those ion engines powered.

I think each Gigantor solar array can fully power one ion engine. But I'll have much more ion engines than I will room for solar arrays. And even if I could fit as many solar arrays as engines, half of them would always be on the other side of the ship, as in, not in the sun, so not getting power.
I think I'll add a power module to attach to the ion sail which will be filled with thermal generators and solar panels.

Here's a view of my first Ion Sail. It's setting itself in orbit awaiting the next pieces of the ship. It doesn't quite have as much power as I had hoped but I also prepared for this situation. It's got docking ports at each of its extremities so I can add additional ion engines to the main structure. It also currently has enough solar panels to keep itself powered but as you can see, it's stuck on the dark side of the planet. Good thing I put a few thermal generators because right now the Ion engines are the only thing keeping me from re-entering the atmosphere at the periapsis.

I've also launched into orbit my first XenoRCS container. It holds 1500 monoprop fuel, as well as 77700 Xenon Gas. It also encases 24 thermal generators and 8 more gigantor solar panels. This is meant to be a disposable part of the ship, to be jettisoned and replaced when the fuel runs out.
I'll be attaching that onto the sail tomorrow.

Are you sure there isn't a... you know, easier way to get to other planets?
I'm surprised that ship doesn't count as a planet.

Well, I just installed the impossible parts mod.
Turns out fusion engines can get your fighter into a solar orbit.
Without refueling.
And with half the fuel left.

I'm trying to build a ship that can do more than just get to other planets.
Basically the Ion Sail is like a space towing device. I could attach whatever I wanted to it to pull it to other planets. I can use it to carry station parts, fuel containers, ships, bases, probes, etc..
And since I planned ahead for it to be able to be extended, I'll be able to use it to carry bigger things.

Current problem;

I made up a "mini-ship" challenge for myself, and assembled this uber-tiny probe I shot out to Eeloo(spellczech?). How I did this involved a lot more parts than my challenge entailed, but that's beyond the point. What's the problem is that it has just barely enough power to power it's drone thingy and the single ion engine. It also has 2 tanks of RCS(about full). I need to maneuver it into an orbit over Eeloo, without hitting the planet.

Help?
