You CAN go the wrong way down a one way street, you know. It's illegal though. So don't do it. Or i'll ban you. Don't get any ideas!

Who knows. Probably before Half Life 3.
It will definitely be Tuesday, though, which is nice becase now your checking schedule can be like, 86% more efficient.

Also, if you are so curious, just take a look at the development discussions and my own thread on rendering. From that you can get an idea of what is going into this mod and why it is taking so long. If we wanted to half ass it and make a simple space mod like the one's you can already play elsewhere, it would have been done a year ago but we're not doing that. We're rebuilding the game of Minecraft from the bottom up with state of the art techniques and attention to detail to bring it into the modern era of gaming. The results of this mod will have far reaching impact on the modding community and with any luck, the official game itself. We're committed to the long haul and no amount of begging is going to make us cut corners or compromise on features to get the game out sooner.

Many people would prefer a cheapass IndustrialCraft space-themed ripoff over all the optimizations planned. Kinda sad, really. There was a time when the Minecraft community could be called, "mature". That's no longer the case, it would seem :P

Nonetheless, a simple side-mod to develop couldn't hurt, could it? Like, have the four other devs just twiddling their thumbs develop a small content mod in the interim. Gameplay and mechanics can be perfected, MCforum dudes have something tangible to toy with, and when your rendering pipeline is complete, the development of the full mod's content would have a base to operate off of. Everyone's happy.

Alright, so what could you give them of any consequence which doesn't involve ships or planets, both of which are incompatible with the vanilla engine?

If I remember right the original plan called for some expansion on gameplay planetside before reaching for the stars. Things like blasters, ores, new blocks in general, vehicles like VTOLs and seaborne ships, research, mechs...Futurecraft is quite a tall order, getting the little stuff done now while you get the framework for the big stuff ready seems ideal.

I bet someone could get small ships to work a la Zephyr mod, then everything else can get tested on them. Things like lasers, shipyards, power, pipes, shields, etc. could all be made independently of the engine overhaul, core and reactor recipes can be checked for viability and balance, and someone could start to flesh out a tech tree. Also check the post above me, although mechs would be an enormous pain to implement so they should be kept out.

Ships would require Copernicus, though I think fr0st has a development build for his zeppelin-like functionality, at least according to the development videos posted about one and a half years back. That would be ideal for watercraft and atmospheric carriers; not so much for anything space-related.

That might actually work. Our people have some working experience with Flan's. If we wanted to showcase prototype vehicle models, we could do so completely independently of the Copernicus development.

I think we need to get someone on server travel, kinda important. Also, laser bullets, non-ship entities, guns, turrets, armor, holotables, handheld devices in general.....

That's dependant on Copernicus and how it handles space.

The general content can definitely be done by the others, but the inter-server stuff is a bit above their pay-grade, so to speak.
