We can put in ores the way the game is now, and tweak commonality as we go. That's not an issue.

What I meant is that what we are doing isn't an FC Alpha, but an Alpha pre-release. Nothing in it has to be representative of the final mod.

3-4 ores, small ships, weapons, armor, mining laser a la IC2, pipes, power, and cores should be more than sufficient.

If what I suggested was too over the top, I concede the point. But since this wouldn't have space, basic oceanic destroyers and such using the development build from Copernicus back at the start of this year would be nice in a later update of the 'alpha'.

Also, ***k pipes imo. Can't be just a Buildcraft/IC2/Redpower/Tekkit ripoff

Pipes are just too handy.

OBJ importers (there are several) do fine with 3d objects for instance check out 3d minecraft by Noppes. It looks preety good to me.

...what are you talking about? xD

Oh, I see. Sorry, your wording confused me but then I googled it.

I guess it voxelizes .obj files and uses them in place of 2d items?

That would be ass-backwards. The 3D mesh is the natural form of anything you see on screen. All Minecraft does normally is construct a 3D mesh from the icon art the same way it constructs terrain meshes. Extracting the geometry from a model file is the conventional way of doing things.

I could say I already knew that it just used the sprites to create cubes, but not a high probability of being believed there.

What confuses me, is that if minecraft's engine is only capable of cubes without addons, how the items don't end up looking like something out of Ace of Spaces. If that's voxelization there, then that's quite a few cubes to create a shape like that. If that's just loading the file directly, well, I don't know. That's some black magic that defies what little I know about MC modding.

The screencap above has mods in it. The sword object requests a different render class than the normal pixel item renderer. The new one imports the sword's mesh from a file. It's most likely Flans, or turbomodelthingy; whoever is handling model imports these days.

I've mentioned it before, but there is nothing mystical about Minecraft's relationship to OpenGL. Notch made all of his models from code because they were all really simple and it wasn't worth it to model them conventionally. But there is nothing requiring the rest of us to do the same.

That's Noppes's 3D Items mod.

Ooh, a new contender, then. Or at least, new to me.
I wonder if he'll release an API...

IMO Noppes has some of the coolest mods around right now. His Custom NPCs is fairly unique, as is his More Player Models and this 3D Minecraft mod. He does a very good job with the models and animations.
