Free Man's War

Post by cats » Mon Apr 03, 2017 9:56 pm

"Swift and decisive retaliation" were the words the governor had used after the Interliner Sagittarius went down over the ocean of Second Mercer. They were meaningless words, the kind people in power always say after a disaster to give the feeling that everything is under control, to give the mourners a way to forget their grief and focus their anger. It was a tactic to preserve morale. It didn't work. Too many people knew too much. In truth, the thirty thousand lost wouldn't be paid such glorious homage. The dozen warships simply weren't enough to mount an offensive. The dead had to settle. Sagittarius's solute was a three-bomb flare off the bows of the four remaining Interliners. Its colonists' procession was a retreat to safer space while they themselves boiled at the feet of the islands on which they'd thought they would make their homes.

Now, all that isn't to say there won't be any retaliation. Just not effective retaliation involving trained soldiers, well-armed ships, or any direction of attack. This is a government-funded, civilian operation. The mission, mainly, is to discover what exactly caused the destruction of Sagittarius. The nature of the mission will change with the situation. Luckily, the Advance Destiny expedition was formed with such contingencies in mind, and a large amount of equipment has been reserved for mercenary and militia forces.

Advance Destiny
Spoiler:
The Advance Destiny Colony Expedition was launched in 2458 by Horizon Interstellar Incorporated and the United Solar Directorates. Its goal was to transport approximately 100,000 colonists to the Andromeda galaxy and establish a self-sustaining settlement on one of the previously discovered, habitable planets in order to advance the interests of the Directorates. Though certainly not the first voyage to Andromeda, it is the first large-scale, single-wave expedition.

Five extreme distance jumpships, dubbed “Interliners” by Horizons, set out from the Milky Way. Two of Horizon’s newest and most advanced Interliners, the Ark-series vessels Sagittarius and Andromeda spearheaded the expedition. An Ark-series passenger ship is nearly 3 kilometers long, can accommodate 30,000 passengers, and can perform a jump with several million tonnes of docked ships and cargo. The Ark ships are essential to Advance Destiny, as no other craft comes remotely close to their jump capabilities.

Along with the two Ark-series ships are three of the older New Carolina-series Interliners, Stardust IV, Mars IV, and Cosmic Princess. While they lack the jump power of their new cousins, they still have a daunting capacity, up to 20,000 passengers, and some would say even better recreation and entertainment, since they used to be interstellar cruise ships.

The expedition was meant to establish a permanent human population, meaning that the vast majority of passengers and crew are human. However, there is an appreciable number of nonhuman explorers, scientists, adventurers, and representatives aboard, some of which have taken this opportunity to get first dibs on any xenoarcheological artifacts in the sector or make secondary contact with the natives of Second Mercer.
LOCATIONS
Spoiler:
Second Mercer
The planet is the middle of three in the system, which is known as “Second Mercer’s System,” or “Karma System,” or “New Eden,” or any number of other names depending on who you ask. It’s very Earthlike, 80% surface water, average temperature of 14 degrees celsius, nontoxic atmosphere with 25% oxygen and 73% nitrogen. The continents are small compared to those of earth, and archipelagos are the dominant landform, which is particularly evident near the equator. Its most remarkable feature is its native sapients. Not much is known of them currently, but their culture appears to be quite similar to that of ancient humans (and many other sapient races).
REGARDING YOU
Spoiler:
You may be a hardened vet or you may have never fired a weapon in your life. Either way, you’ve been put into the militia reserve, which means you are, officially, working in a new unit of the Mad Dog Legion, a take-all-comers merc company which was contracted through Sandline by Horizons Interstellar and the Solar Directorates. Horizons and the USD hired the Mad Dogs for both security and the possibility that war crimes may need to be committed.

If you are a new member of the Militia, then you will receive a sign-on bonus of 10,000 credits. If you are a vet, then you will have your own kit, and will not receive a sign-on bonus

Your strengths and weaknesses may determine the outcome of certain events. These are general approximations, mostly a tool to help the GMs. Each attribute gets a rating from 1-10. Try not to go over around 25.

REGARDING EQUIPMENT
Spoiler:
The equipment you carry and how you choose to use it determines your effectiveness. your Each piece of equipment has a name, a manufacturer, a Base Value (BV), and many have Modules/Upgrades and Internal Slots.

The name is just that. It’s what you put on your kit so we know what you’re carrying. Make it more memorable than letters and numbers.

The Base Value is the average price of the item, but stores may sell the item for higher and people buy for lower.

Modules/Upgrades are items that can be added to pieces of equipment or replace similar items. Modules replace similar items (eg. “Replacement barrel.”), meaning that you cannot use two or more of those items at once. Upgrades use up the equipment’s limited internal slots.. If a piece of equipment has two internal slots (Internal Slots: 2) and you put an upgrade that [TAKES 1 SLOT] in it, then you have 1 internal slot left. Some replacement items also use internal slots.
Help grow the list by submitting new pieces of equipment. The description doesn’t have to be long.

EQUIPMENT

Horizons Interstellar
Spoiler:
Omnipack V
BV 500
Manufacturer: Horizons
At 8x15x20cm, the fifth-generation Omnipack is the most compact high-density power supply to come out of Horizons Intst. For most uses, energy is transmitted from the device wirelessly, but, for higher-current applications, a wired connection can be established via tethered contacts located on the top face of the Omnipack. The contacts are static-adhesive and can be placed virtually anywhere, including the wearer’s skin, without risk of shock. The Omnipack can be carried as an independent unit or integrated into an Omnisuit.

Modules/Upgrades
Internal Slots:
3
Smartpack: BV 750. [TAKES 1 SLOT] A computer. Integrates with other Horizons computers.
Fission Cells: BV 1,000. [TAKES 1 SLOT] Replaces the power cells of the Omnipack with critical fissile material and power converter.
Arc Contacts: BV 500. Replaces the electrical contacts on the Omnipack. Allows the Omnipack to be used as an electric weapon.
Safe: BV 0. [TAKES 1 SLOT] Keep small valuables safe in a spare compartment.

Omnisuit V
BV 10,000
Manufacturer: Horizons
The Omnisuit V is a self-healing, ballistic-resistant, environmentally reactive article of clothing that covers the entire body. The suit’s components are suspended in a genetic plastic which is programmed to recombine in the same configuration and respond to the wearer’s thoughts, meaning that it can be simply torn from the body without the use of any kind of fastening mechanism, and “stuck” back together. The piece automatically measures and regulates the user’s vitals, and manages hygiene, including recycling liquid waste. The piece acts as a hardsuit in a vacuum, and cuts the effect of high pressure by ⅓. Air can be recycled by the Omnisuit for about 30 minutes. Upgades to the Omnisuit can be seamlessly integrated into its skin. Flexible monitors can be applied anywhere on the suit.

Modules/Upgrades
Internal Slots:
2

Musculature: BV 2,500. [TAKES 1 SLOT] Adds a stiff skeleton and myopolymer muscles to the Omnisuit. Cannot be used with external armor.
EVA Oxy Upgrade: BV 250. [TAKES 1/2 SLOT] Adds pockets of chemicals which break down to release a breathable air mixture. Extends EVA time for several days.
EVA Survival Upgrade: [TAKES 1/2 SLOT] Adds pockets of essential nutrients which leach through the suit into the skin of the wearer.
Smartskin: BV 2,000. [TAKES 1 SLOT] Adds to the Omnisuit’s dermal computer network. Integrates with other Horizons data systems.
Command Suite: BV 3,000. [TAKES 1 SLOT] The user's monitor system is adapted for a tactical command role. Additions like team vital monitor algorithims, live tracking equipment, and an improved communication hardware boost team efficiency.
Armor Plating: BV 500. Replaces the outer layer of the Omnisuit with a denser, more rigid memory material to increase durability. Decreases high pressure by 9/10.
Active Camouflage: BV 2,000. Replaces outer layer of the Omnisuit with a network of synthetic chromatophores.

M-12 Pulse Rifle
BV 7,000
Manufacturer: Horizons
Lightweight and relatively power-efficient, the Horizons Defense PRM-12 Ion Pulse Rifle is the standard modular weapon system of the USD. It uses ionic pressure to propel a projectile at velocities ranging from 25 to 1000+ meters per second. The bore of the stock barrel and receiver can be adjusted to accommodate projectiles as small as the 3x44mm AP dart to as large as the 12mm antimat shell, or replaced with a larger diameter barrel (up to 40mm). Larger caliber/higher velocity requires more propellant, obviously. Rate of fire is also variable, but limited by size and velocity. When out of ammunition, the weapon can be used as a close-quarters plasma torch. One of the weapon’s few drawbacks is that it is nearly as loud as a powder firearm. It also produces a fair amount of heat. Requires power source.

Ammunition: Any solid projectile. Propellant.
Modules/Upgrades
Internal Slots:
2

Standard Barrel: BV 400. Replacement barrel. Accepts 3-12mm ammunition. Standard barrel.
Long Barrel: BV 600. Replacement barrel. A longer version of the standard barrel which allows for higher velocity and longer range.
Plasma Accelerator: BV 1500. Replacement barrel that converts the PRM-12 into a short-range plasma burner.
High Caliber Upgrade: BV 2,000. Replacement barrel and receiver. 12-40mm. Allows much larger projectiles.

Personal Defense Frame
BV: 12,000
Manufacturer: Horizons Interstellar
The mark VII Personal Defense Frame, like many of Horizons' other signature products, was designed with modularity in mind. As the name suggests, the Defense Frame acts as a skeleton onto which various kinds of armor and equipment can be secured. Its myopolymer musculature (with pneumatic redundancies) assures that you will retain full, natural mobility in even the heaviest of compatible gear. The system is best used with an Omnisuit V.

Modules/Upgrades
Slots: 4
Jump Pack: BV: 4,000. [TAKES 2 SLOTS] An ion thruster system which allows the wearer to fly short distances.
Additional Musculature: [TAKES 1 SLOT] Adds myopolymer filaments to the frame's existing musculature.
Kinetic Armor: 2,000. [TAKES 1 SLOT] Dense, strong plating most effective against piercing projectiles.
Albative Armor: 3,500. [TAKES 1 SLOT] Plating which sacrifices some of its physical toughness for protection against energy weaponry.
Reactive Armor: 4,750. [TAKES 2 SLOTS] Detonates explosive shells prior to impact, minimizing damage.

Zaa-Bai Armoury Ltd.
Spoiler:
ZB35A3 "Predator"
BV 2,000
Manufacturer: Zaa-Bai
An old but fine battle rifle, the ZB35 was originally produced as the service rifle of the New Chupadero Republic and several others. However, as the urbanization of Mars continued, the need for range declined, and the ZB35 was brought out of service. She lives on, however, in the hearts of frontier mercs everywhere looking for a trustworthy and affordable friend.
Internal Slots: 1

ZB 450 "Vindicator"
BV 1,700
Manufacturer: Zaa-Bai
Zaa-Bai's pride and joy, this assault rifle has remained their flagship product since the 440 controversy over the polymer body warping from extended firing. Directly responding to this, the 450 has been designed to be fully metal. Innovations in metallurgy since the 440 have allowed the 450 to be only slightly heavier proportionally.
Internal Slots: 2

ZB 455 "Banshee"
BV 1,100
Manufacturer: Zaa-Bai
Initially considered a commercial failure, the desire for a durable and low-mass carbine was felt as loyalist crews sought defense from boarders during the Aurigan Uprisings. Any vet worth his salt will tell you, the 455 is the best damn bullpup on or off the market.
Internal Slots: 2

CFC6A2 "Tempest"
BV 1,350
Manufacturer: Zaa-Bai
Some say that the man with the bigger stick always wins. Zaa-Bai says that the man whose stick hits first always wins. The CFC6, with its precision trigger and extreme firing rate, is guarunteed to hit first or your money back. This SMG's portability also allows even the most volume-conscious belter some breathing room.
Internal Slots: 1

ZB Saucoeng 23
BV 1,000
Manufacturer: Zaa-Bai
When Xi'an scoutships first landed this side of The Crab, it was Colonial Police armed with Saucoengs that held them off. In continuation of that proud legacy, Zaa-Bai has made minimal changes to the famous pistol over the years, only updating and modernising materials and some parts.
Internal Slots: 1

ZB Combat Knife '33
BV 125
Manufacturer: Zaa-Bai
A big, simple knife with a serrated edge. About as old-fashioned as you can get.
Internal Slots: 0

Zaa-Bai MICS Mk8
BV 6,500
Manufacturer: Zaa-Bai
A lightweight combat skin, comprising a Nantech™ undersuit, composite outer plates, and a Type III Fibreweave vest. Every purchase includes a free HESD-approved protective full-head helmet with vacuum-sealing capability. MICS have been a favourite of militias and PMCs for decades due to their extreme versatility and the large after-market community.

Modules/Upgrades
Internal Slots:
2

Modules/Upgrades:
SmartLink™ Palms: BV 1,100. [TAKES 1/4 SLOT] Allows interfacing with any weapon made in the last 43 years to display information directly to a user's HUD.
Heavy Armour: BV 1,500. [TAKES 1 SLOT] A set of reinforced ceramo-steel plates that take a whole MICS up to Type IV.
Fluid Seal: BV 125. [TAKES 1/2 SLOT] Prevents unwanted fluids and debris from entering the barrel of the weapon. Does not protect chamber. Compatible with all projectile weapons. Warranty not included.
HUD Upgrade: BV 1,300. [TAKES 1 SLOT] By integrating a simple VI script and some new hardware, the user's HUD becomes astronomically more useful. Simple additions like visual IFF algorithims, live LIDAR, and vital monitors help immensely. Only downside is that this should've been stock.
Static Adhesive Boots: BV 500. Replaces footwear on standard armor. Generates a reactive field under the boot's sole which causes it to cling to most surfaces.

Kawalec Armaments
Spoiler:
Lodz 2272
Manufacturer: Kawalec Armaments
BV: 4,500
A return to the roots named in honor of the home town and birth date of the company founder, the Lodz is a must-own for any collector of Kawalec weaponry. With its gleaming white nanoplast exterior and polished sandalwood detailing, this pistol is an homage to the very first weapon Wislaw Kawalek ever sold. It's not only a shining icon of modernized retro design, however: it's a lethal weapon capable of firing contained plasma bolts with the accuracy you've come to expect from the Kawalec brand, although of course not with the same range or accuracy as our rifles.

Moray Beta
Manufacturer: Kawalec Armaments
BV: 6000
Your favorite electro-shotgun returns in an all-polymer body with a scratch-resistant nanotreated silvery finish. After baseless complaints about certain risks with the Moray Alpha, proved wrong time and time again by our team of independent experts, the paranoid amongst us can now have the iconic metallic shine of the original with none of the electrocution anxiety.

Modules/Upgrades
Flame conversion: BV 1,250. Converts the Moray into a short-range burst plasma-flamer.
Bolt conversion: BV 1,300. Converts the Moray into a relatively inaccurate and short-ranged plasma carbine, firing powerful contained plasma bolts.

Zephyr 4E
Manufacturer: Kawalec Armaments
BV: 15 000
Here at Kawalec, we know that for the hunting or sport shooting enthusiast, accuracy and range is key. That's why we produce the Zephyr series rifle, with pinpoint accuracy over swindling distances. The 4E is no different from previous models in that regard: this hybrid electromagnetic sharpshooter rifle fires a 7mm kinetic projectile, which allows for a higher range of customization and adaptability than plasma or laser weaponry. The on-board computer system interfaces with a range of integrated recoil-dampeners, cooling mechanisms, and various aim-adjusting subsystems, allowing your gun to fire precisely with every pull of the trigger. When combined with our own patented brand of smart bullets, you have a setup that is guaranteed to hit with milimeter accuracy over ranges exceeding 10km or your money back*. The rifle comes in a variety of different design options, all of which include the option for custom engraving.
All in all, the Zephyr 4E is not only a staple of luxury weapon design; it's one of the best sniper rifles on the market.

Phobos Arms
Spoiler:
Acidalia Mark II Flash-Blade
Manufacturer: Phobos Arms Company, Ltd.
BV: 4,500
A large folding knife perfect for those personal moments. The Acidalia Mk.II consists of an armoured sheath (with modular attachments to adhere to various armour and vac-suit bracers), a tungsten blade, and a small generator; when the user flicks their wrist (precise activation gesture customizable), the blade folds out and locks, and the generator, within one second, heats the blade to nearly 1,700K. The combination of a hypersharpened edge and high-heat blade surface will handily incapacitate many foes. NOTE: Thermoprotective gloves strongly advised.
Ammunition: Diamond-coated and scattergun available.

Slots: x1.
Diamond Blade Coating: BV 250. A thin diamond coating to the blade to provide extra durability and cutting power. x1 Upgrade Slot.
Scattergun: BV 350. A small barrel containing a simple firing mechanism and a ball-bearing filled shell; acts as a very short-range shotgun. x1 Upgrade Slot.

Mariner Mark IV Coil Carbine
Manufacturer: Phobos Arma Company Ltd.
BV: 7,000
Ever feel like none of the carbines on the market pack the punch they advertise? Look no further. The Mariner Mk.IV.CC is a versatile, highly powerful weapon intended for the modern spacer. With semi-automatic and automatic firing modes, a compact, easily-stored frame, and several optional add-ons, the Mariner IV is an excellent addition to any armoury. x2 Upgrade Slots.
Ammunition: 7mm

AMMUNITION VARIETIES
Spoiler:
Ammunition cost (and effectiveness) scales with size. BVs displayed are of 7mm diameter ammunition, the most common. Certain varieties of ammunition may be difficult to find in some calibers. Most places that sell ammunition can add custom components like sabots or powder casings for a small fee.

Balls!: BV 0.20. The cheapest, smallest, and least effective ammunition. Quantity over quality.

Slug: BV 1. A chunk of metal. Cheap and moderately effective against both modestly armored and unarmored targets.

SCHE: BV: 3. Got body-armoured boarders bounding about your boat? Try Shaped-Charge High Explosive rounds. While losing some effectiveness against heavily armoured targets, SCHE handily puts large, messy holes in light-to-medium personal armour.

KP Rod: BV: 2. Kinetic energy penetrator comprised of a dense, tough osmium alloy. Most effective at high velocities. Tends to make small, clean holes in soft targets.

HED Penetrator: BV: 4. High Explosive-Driven penetrator. Upon impact, a high-explosive detonation within the shell propels the penetrating rod forward, into the target. More expensive than a KP rod, but achieves a similar effect with lower velocities. Get some HED.

Flechette Rounds: BV 2. Sensitive equipment you'd rather not shoot at? Perhaps flechettes are the thing for you. Each round splits apart dart-shaped flechettes after firing, sending a hail of high-velocity needles downrange. Minimal damage to equipment (and unfortunately, heavily armoured targets), but entertainingly dangerous against lightly armored foes.

Shredder Rounds: BV 2.5. An improvement on hollow point projectiles, shredder rounds maximize deep tissue trauma by splitting into several pieces upon impact. Only effective against unarmored targets.

VEHICLES AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT

Boeing-Lockheed
Spoiler:
Loggerhead
Manufacturer: Boeing-Lockheed Orbital Division
BV: 740,000
The EV-40 Loggerhead is a reliable, durable, and efficient transorbital entry/exit vehicle used by both official armed services and paramilitary organizations. It is effective in high pressure, low pressure, and vacuum, has a passenger capacity of 20 plus two pilots (maximum occupancy of 52), and can lift approximately 100 tons. Its four ion thruster winglets and forward heat shield give it a likeness to the Earth-native sea turtle after which it is named. Though its ion engines are electrically driven, propellant must be refilled about every other round-trip, depending on drop weight. Cargo can be carried in holds on either side of the passenger cabin or on the belly of the craft.

Propellant BV: 10,000 per tank (Default 2 tanks)

Modules/Upgrades
Ground Effect Overhaul: BV 28,000. Nearly triples the near-surface acceleration, carry limit, and efficiency of the Loggerhead, but reduces exoatmospheric performance and lift weight by half.
Armor Upgrade: BV 5,000 per area (Ventral, Dorsal, Stern, Bow, Sides). Reduces carrying capacity by 10 tons per area. Adds energy and kinetic-resistant armor and shock dampeners.
Light Hardpoints: BV 1,250 per hardpoint. Limit 2 hardpoints per area (Ventral, Stern, Bow, Port, Starboard). Adds antipersonnel weapon hardpoints to the craft.
Heavy Hardpoints: BV 2,000 per hardpoint. Limit 2 hardpoints per area (Dorsal, Ventral, Stern, Bow). Adds antimaterial weapon hardpoints to the craft.
Propellant tank: BV 750 per tank. Replaces 1/2 cargo hold with an additional propellant tank (max 4)

Description: A thirty-something man with stony features, pale "I rarely saw natural sunlight" skin, and dark hair.

Personality: A generally amiable of worryingly violent man, Kenzo is slow to anger but quick to introduce faces to solid objects.

Backstory: Growing up amongst the criminal syndicates on Mars, Kenzo gained a somewhat skewed perspective on minor things such as "right" and "wrong". Serving as an enforcer for nearly ten years, it only differentiated from his childhood in that he had slightly more clue what he was doing.

The expedition was seen as either an opportunity for him to get out from under the Martian crimelords, or set up a syndicate on a new colony; but the lucrative signing bonus for Mad Dog convinced him that money speaks louder than criminal tradition.

Greetings.

As you know, you are officially part of Unit [144] of the Mad Dog Legion, however, you're working for the United Solar Directorates and will take orders from me or my staff. For reasons which remain classified, you, and the others in Unit [144], have been chosen to act independently of the other militia forces.

During this phase of your mission, you are not required to meet with your unit, the headquarters of which is located in [Ark Andromeda, Dock 2, EV-40 Loggerhead-class (Des. MDL DS11) "Betty"

The following is classified information.

At the moment, we do not know what caused the destruction of the Ark-class ship Sagittarius, but we do suspect a malicious actor. Your orders are to find who or what this malicious actor is. To do this, you have three options, two of which require you to land on the planet Second Mercer. Searching the wreckage of Sagittarius may very well yield clues as to its exact mode of destruction. There will, undoubtedly, be valuable equipment that survived the crash as well. The natives of Second Mercer are also suspected of playing some role. You are authorized to use lethal force against them should it be necessary to further the interests of the USD. The third, and most sinister possibility is sabotage. There have been reports of organized criminal activity on Cosmic Princess. That would be a likely starting point to your investigation.

Our partners encourage you to take advantage of the militia discount currently in effect at all Horizons stores.

Name: Vergil Atwood
Species: Human
Fitness: 5/10
Perception: 4/10
Ranged Combat: 7/10
Close Combat: 3/10
Charisma: 6/10
Skills: Master of Concealment, Escape Artist, Decent Liar, Archer Adept, Golf Master, Cultured
Equipment: Omnisuit V (+Armour Plating, +Smartskin), Omnipack (+Fission Cells, +Safe), PRM-12(Stock)
Description: One look at Vergil and you could tell he was a rich kid. Perfectly kept brown hair, clean shaven, minty fresh breath. He would often stare at you with his piercing green eyes just to see how long it'd take for you to break. Closer inspection reveals that there's much more than just a snobby, overprivileged kid. There are faint scars across his neck, face, and arms indicating that he's been in a few fights before. A slight twitch in his leg, and some injection marks on either arm show he'd done drugs when he was younger.
Personality: While he's generally nice, and enjoyable to be around, he finds dealing with people to be taxing. He's quick to take up a challenge, and is fiercely competitive. He likes to give people the benefit of the doubt, even when he really shouldn't.
Backstory: Vergil Atwood, heir to the Atwood fortune. It's a small fortune, but a fortune none the less. See, Vergil is the son of Henry Atwood who owns a mining company in a fairly mineral rich system, and owns mineral rights to 60% of the asteroids, 3 large moons, and a small planet. Vergil never liked growing up rich, 'you're being too strict' 'well Jimmy's parents let him' he would often protest. He would sneak off to go play with other kids while his parents were away. Eventually he got pretty good at dodging the servants and hiding in the cameras' blind spots. One night he ran into a bad element that threatened him into doing jobs for them, a stick up here, a burglary there, with a little blackmail on top. When he got home he'd have to craft up elaborate stories to explain why he was late, or where he'd been, even why he had bruises and broken bones when the gang was done with him. Vergil's father often took him on business trips, where he warned him to "be quiet and pay attention," and "don't make me look bad." On these trips Vergil learned about different cultures, and how to run a business. When Henry was home he tought his son the 'manly' sports of archery and golf, while Vergil was pretty good he could never beat his father, and was often teased when he lost. When Vergil heard about the expedition he saw it as the perfect escape from his father, and signed up immediately, much to his father's protest.

Description: A woman in her late 20s, serving as a pilot for the USD military. She has her father's pale blue eyes and black hair (which she cuts short), and her mother's smooth, somewhat fair complexion.

Personality: With her not-so-serious behavior and fondness for drink, Aina might not seem like the best candidate for a military position at first glance. But she is fiercely loyal to her mission, and skilled at what she does.

Backstory: Ever since she was a young child back on Earth, Aina was fascinated by vehicles. As a little girl she dreamed of becoming a racecar driver or a spaceship pilot, and as a teenager she decided to study to become a mechanic. However, after having bad luck both with the job market and with higher education, Aina joined the military at the age of 19. There she eventually became a pilot, transporting troops and equipment during various conflicts. She was given a place in the expedition by her own request, in part for the sake of adventure and in part for other, more private reasons.

Spoiler:
As many of you know, members of the Advance Destiny Precursor team made contact with dominant native species of Second Mercer several years ago, though, due to the short contact time and primitive, semitribal nature of the species, they did not establish diplomatic relations with the race. As a result, much about them is unknown. We intend to study this race, as well as the rest of Mercerian ecology, and attempt to succeed where the precursor team did not. The Foundation believes that the natives are the key to discovering what destroyed Sagittarius. We encourage you to join us.

She's nothing special, but she's mine. Well, not mine. Not anymore, at least. Well, she wasn't mine before either. I was just her pilot. Co-pilot. Well, I was her pilot after Sagittarius went down. Captain Will bought it with the big one.
Betty's been commandeered for what looks to be your own personal use. I guess we can't all have that kind of luck.
Meet us at Andromeda Dock 2. Midship, in the open hangar. We're moving our personals out as I speak, but I'll be here for a couple hours.

You better fly right.

Vergil sat at his desk and read through his notifications and messages, making mental notes as he went through them. One of his first orders of business would be to speak to 'The Man.' Secondly, he perused over the map of the Sagittarius' wreckage, looking for anything interesting.

Now that he has finished reading his messages, Vergil decided that it was time to head out. He looked at his Omnisuit and pondered for a moment on whether or not he should take it, ultimately deciding that it would probably be best to leave it for now. Vergil stood up and stretched a bit before heading out the door. As he exited his room he looked around a bit and headed towards the rec district, and club fever.

Stardust IV's Recreation District was the best in the fleet. Stardusters claimed it was the best of any ship made in the Milky Way. The Parks were within the ship's observation dome. They were enormous, with manicured lawns and a stand of trees sustained by artificial rain and sun cycles, 0-G exercise equipment in case the gravity failed, even some wildlife. The Parks, however, were most certainly not why Stardust had the best entertainment in the fleet. Every ship had a park, it was necessary to keep morale up and passengers healthy. What really made Stardust's Rec District the best was the Underground.

Stardust Underground extended five decks below The Parks. It was comprised of dozens of restaurants, clubs, bars, brothels, drug shops, sex shops, drug cafes, fetish cafes, drug dens, drug depots, sex warehouses, service alleys that could either be sex dens or drug dens in a pinch, music venues, and seven very overworked medical stations. It was not a place for children, and it was definitely not a place for the devoutly prudish religious.

Club Fever was one of the more tame establishments in The Underground. Customers, at least, usually kept their clothes on. It was what many referred to as a "vibe bar" for reasons that only beame fully clear once one entered. The difference between the outside and the inside of Club Fever was, simply, the music. It wasn't there before, only the street and passersby and a bulkhead door with 'CLUB FEVER" scrawled over it in glowing letters, then, after Vergil stepped in, it was the only thing there was. Music came from the walls, and from the floors, from every surface, and progressed into the air, and permeated Vergil's bones. It was basal, animalistic music. A smoke-like, luminescent haze hung in the air, thick and pleasantly fragrant. The smoke particles, too, vibrated with the the room, and their light changed to match the music. Vergil almost didn't hear the gruff "Hold still." that came before he felt something cold and hard against the back of his neck.

Vergil, fearing that he has a gun pointed at him, straightened himself up and held his arms out to his side.

"Hey now, lets not get hasty here."

Aina was awakened from her nap by the loud and sudden silence being emitted by her music player. Her first thought was how weird it is that silence sometimes does a better job of waking us up than noise does. Her second was to check her messages.
Stay away from the cursed sons, play nice with the natives, got it. Maps of the crash site, very useful indeed. Mysterious message from an anonymous sender about meeting up unarmed in a shady bar for some vague "information"? No thanks, let someone else in the unit take the risk, some of the new recruits are certain to go. Besides, her quarters are on the Andromeda anyway. The last message, though, the one directed at her...

Betty, huh? The dropship serving as the unit HQ? Not much of a surprise that she would serve as the pilot, of course. Deciding it best to head over to check it out and maybe start getting it prepared for when everyone else arrives, Aina put on her omnisuit and left her quarters, heading towards the hangars in Dock 2.

Club Fever
The gruff voice sniggered, and the device was replaced with a gentle hand that guided Vergil forward. The old man to which the hand belonged was small and mousy, and wore a cap on his bald head. He ambled beside Vergil, his hand still on the back of Vergil's neck in what would appear to be a friendly gesture to any onlookers, until they reached a door that was partially hidden within the wall. After a moment, the door opened to reveal a space that looked much like the living rooms of some of the more expensive passenger suites. The door closed behind them, smothering the noise of the club. The old man's hand slipped from Vergil's neck and pointed to one of the large, heavily padded sofas, then tossed a small, disposable multisensor onto the cushions.

"Had to check your 'metrics. Find any implants." he said as he walked behind a wooden counter in the corner of the room. "Name's Ven. Want anything to drink?"

Andromeda, Dock 2.
Andromeda's open hangar was massive. It was a three-deck-deep, two hundred meter wide strip that ran along the side of the Ark, and contained thousands of small ships and personal craft ranging in size from single-occupancy EVA vehicles to USD corvettes whose girth nearly scraped the ceiling. Betty had a lot in a corner, near the airlock and a wall, between several other Loggerheads and smaller military dropcraft. A young man with bright orange hair and too-pale skin was leaning against Betty's hull, pondering an unlit, old fashioned tobacco cigar.
