Synopsis

The NeoRoman Dominion is a technologically advanced race of humanoids based on the super-planet NeoRome. Claiming to be descendants of the Romans who existed prior to them, who were in turn descendents of the Old Romans of Earth, they have a rich culture revolving around efficiency, science, and productivity. They take pride in advanced technology and devices, and use new knowledge to every extent. They are also rich in culture, with music, arts, literature, and entertainment, which benefits from their long-standing policy of free speech.

Technology:

Graiv Field Generator

A highly advanced shield and cloaking field generator, this utilizes a intense magnetic and electromagnetic field to shield or cloak the ship. Shielding is common technology, but cloaking is something else entirely. It bends gravity using this field so that most light flows around the field and heads in it's original course on the other side of the ship. Only very select frequencies of various wavelengths are allowed through the field, allowing minimal outside detection and allows the ship to still see and act. It can also completely eliminate all frequencies from entering the field, which renders it entirely invisible but completely blind.

Energy Field Nullifier

A more recent technology, this device creates a field in any given area to completely nullify or dampen certain kinds of energy and interaction. It uses more energy than the graiv field, but dramatically extends the lifetime of any object. When activated, it drains the target area of unwanted energy until only certain interactions are possible, such as electrical flow or mechanical movement. Any other energy is siphoned off and released outside the field. This can remove kinetic energy from air and make it perfectly stable, removing friction damage to electronics. It can remove heat from engine or cooling systems. It can essentially make the lifetime of any object nearly infinite. It can't shield itself, but it can shield others, is expensive and requires rare materials, and the energy draw increases exponentially as the field and objects inside the field get bigger. This is standard in research laboratories, as it allows for the testing of one situation without outside forces such as wind or dust or heat from affecting the results. It allows for very compact computers without the need for expensive cooling equipment. It allows for the preservation of any organic being inside the field indefinitely, by slowing down aging and rotting energies. It's very versatile!

Unfortunately, some of the materials required are very hard to get, including Neutrinos, Dark Matter, and Antimatter. New ways are being explored to get these materials, but until these are proven and in place, these units will be very few and extremely expensive.

Harmonic Wave Cannon

This weapon system, used in the civil war that gave birth to NeoRome, is a very efficient and very powerful weapon system. The core creates highly focused infrared waves that build up in a central prism until it reaches critical energy levels, where it emits the infrared waves in four streams in four directions. As the waves exit, harmonizers balance the beams very slightly so that all the waves are in tune with each other, drastically improving focus and decreasing beam dropoff. Based on range, the mirrors adjust to focus the beams on a central point. At the central point, the infrared waves dramatically heat up the point in a very short amount of time. Based on the material, it explodes or vaporises, causing massive damage and heat shock to the surrounding material. As it fires, the mirrors spin around the central core, allowing for sustained fire of the beam and for movement of the beam once firing starts. This allows for a large swath of area to be hit by the beam. It is still in use today, and much larger and efficient versions of the Civil War ones are standard in every major ship.

FTL Phase-Tunnel Expander

This is a device that exploits the naturally occuring quantum wormholes that appear everywhere. It uses small singularities to force the wormhole to collapse on itself, stopping it at the quantum level. It then expands the hole using intense EMP, concentrated on the hole. Once expanded, several gravitational 'pings' force the wormhole to reconnect to a given location, based on the ping data. This ping data is created by analyzing the gravitational field of the destination's closest celestial object. Almost every body has an unique gravitational signature, making this travel very accurate. The ships are deposited on the edge of the stronger gravity well, as ships are torn apart when exiting in these wells. In addition, one device can allow multiple ships through, provided that the wormhole has been made large enough. Since these devices are expensive and costly to run, many NeoRoman stations have several large generators to allow for the opening of multiple wormholes. This allows civilians without FTL drives and large military fleets to move quickly through developed systems. FTL Phase-Tunnels are standard on every military vessel, starting at frigates.

History

The Civil War

During the Era of Stability, the Old Romans were experimenting with a technology that had the power to destroy worlds. It was classified level Pho. They were test firing it on some asteroids, large ones, when a control malfunctioned and the laser missed the asteroid by several feet. The beam was meant to falloff after a few hundred KM, but they underestimated the power level's capacity. It was set to 9001 at the time, the max being 91849183047. Although a small miss is no problem on a planet, in space it's disastrous. The beam hit the planet Graunch, a population of 15 Billion, and the planet threw itself apart as the molecules burst apart (Think Doctor Device from Enders Game). As news spread on the attack, several governments severly questioned Old Rome's intentions and morals. They denied any affliation with the incident. The provincial government of the Beta Aquile system announced that it has broken away and formed a new empire, due to the atrocious actions of the National Government. On the day they fell the Old Roman flag and raised the new one, the Super-Weapon fired again, aimed directly at Beta Aquile's star. The star went Nova, killing some 29 Billion Souls on assorted planets in the system.

Things escalated quickly after that. Many systems revolted against the Empire, and the Romans kept destroying planets until the weapon was destroyed by rebelling officers aboard the station. The sides were drawn, people were drafted, and the Civil War began. The Loyalists fielded some 5 fleets of about 121 warships each to attack the five main Rebel Outposts. Badly outnumbered and outgunned, the Rebels formed 4 Rag-Tag fleets from captured ships. The first fleet, the The Beta Aquile Revenge was made up of survivors of the Beta Aquile destruction. Their flagship was the Ragnarov, the very same ship Emperor Fenway now commands. They used hit and run tactics, surrounding enemy fleets then escaping before they could muster a counter-attack. They also relied on human error, such as blockading a planet with hulks of unfinished or useless ships to fool the enemy.

The Loyalists attacked Talrim first, cutting through the weak defenses like a hot knife through butter. Once in orbit around the planet, they demanded the rebels to stand down or be destroyed. They refused. The Marlin, the flagship of the Loyalist Fleet, ordered Nuclear Bombardment of the planet. Ships began fleeing in droves, miners, civilians, ex-military, anyone in danger. The loyalists picked off every single one. The Proton Pixel Rebel fleet warped in as the second planet was bombarded and quickly engaged the Loyalists. With their attention focused on the fleet, the inhabitants of the planet were able to escape to another system. It was the bloodiest battle of the war. Nearly 300 Loyalist ships, including two dreadnaughts, engaged about 200 outdated Rebel ships. Neither side won, but it was a major blow to the Loyalists. Seeing the Rebel's suppsoed victory and weakness of the Loyalists, several other neutral systems revolted and began the full-scale war against the Empire. The Civil War had really begun.
