A 1.7km is not a dreadnought, it's, like, a flippin' titan m8

Yeah, nobody else has 1.7 km ships. Hell, Vishnu took a long time and is about that size, a bit bigger.

1.7km battlecarrier CANNOT land on a planet. That is definitely dreadnought size. And remember the whole "doesn't cancel out gravity?" If you landed on its tail, you've got the planets gravity and the ship gravity to contend with; artificial gravity doesn't work so close.

1.7 klicks in length is an oversized battleship. Seriously. While it can't land (fine), it's nowhere near dreadnought - those can singlehandedly melt most planets.

That's a total of 1700m L x 25m H x 450m W. That's not particularly huge, in space; especially for dual-role ships.

Unless you fly around in 5m corvettes and 10m frigates.

Implying that ships wouldn't just be classified by there purpose.

Anyways shitting about with unity. Decided the layout will probably be sprites randomly placed on a 2d grid using some sort of noise pattern to represent stars.

The great fact that our battleships are practically dreadnoughts in ME standards.
I'd feel pretty bad if FC and ME ever met. The level of misunderstanding.

Feel bad if ME and WH40k ever meet. That could be entertaining.*

And ship size in ME is limited because the exponential increase in elememt zero requirements as size increases. We don't rely on such handwavium drives in FC, so we can go big.

*After a thirty-second Googling, I can safely say there are many ME/40k fics on the net. Explore at your own risk.

If FC ever does anything more than mention WH40K in a RP like this I'm putting a gun to its head.

Keep in mind it's not even 2200 yet. Human factions are far beyond what they would be, sustaining wars with two of the most advanced races in the galaxy.

And destroyers, used to destroy ships, are usually the same size if not smaller than frigates, which are general-purpose.

It'd go something like this.

Fighter (ship-ship), Bomber (ship-surface), Pinnace (GP)

Destroyer (ship-ship), Frigate (GP)

Battleship (ship-ship), Cruiser (GP), Carrier

Considering everybody has different classifications and meansing for conventional naval terminology, trying to nail it down to one point is rather not going to work.

And I fully support your decision @40k.

Well, even IRL, the international community has never agreed on any straightforward definition of ships.
Heck, the US Navy doesn't even use the term "corvette" at all.

Bigger ships = more mass = more engines needed = more power needed = more powerful/more generators needed = more crew needed = more logistics needed = uneconomical.

Besides, what the hell are you putting in your ships that they need to be over a fucking kilometer?

More equipment, more ammunition, more power, more fighters.

That's a hell of a lot of equipment and ammo and fighters you've got there. Enough to be an independent army even.

Well considering those ships do have to guard the orbits of entire planets it actually does seem reasonable to basically be a mobile space/air/ground military base.
